@getalife67 That's called propaganda. If you don't follow our bullshit you must be the worst person in the world. But guess what, most atheists are pretty nice. Do you ever think how your life got owned by a stupid book, written in the bronze age by a bunch of tribal savages, in the remote, superstitious parts of the middle east.
@getalife67 My personal relationship with Sesame Street is just a valid as your relationship with a God that doesn't exist. So don't mock Sesame Street .
@getalife67 the bible also says, in the book of exodus, chapter 21:
20 “Anyone who beats their male or female slave with a rod must be punished if the slave dies as a direct result, 21 but they are not to be punished if the slave recovers after a day or two, since the slave is their property.
@getalife67 Look up countries like Sweden and Japan, most peaceful, advanced and happy countries in the world, the majority of their population are atheists, now look up countries like Sudan, Somalia, Indonesia, extreme violence, genocide, civil unrest, bad educaton, low happiness, the list goes on, even the US has an incredibly high murder and rape rate; guess what? Those nations are highly religious.
;D

@luke8670 "I don't get the climbing a mountain to see the earth is a circle."
What she was referring to was seeing the "curvature" of the Earth to realize it isn't flat. Somebody sitting at sea level can see this just by looking out at the ocean. It's why you see the mast of ship first on the horizon before you can see the rest of the ship... sea-goers knew of this in ancient times, which is why it's ridiculous that the bible called the Earth flat... anybody looking at the ocean can see its not
To expand on the coment that population growth was relatievly flat for millions of years.
Taking a look at growth patterns we find that there is a direct link between Population Growth and food supplies. The Creationist argument about population rates fails to take into account that before 10,000 B.C.E. here was no agriculture as a food source.
I don't get the climbing a mountain to see the earth is a circle. I've never really noticed it in thousands of hours flying at 30,000 feet. Not to mention you won't last long enough to climb much higher than 18,000 feet. But of course there really isn't someone sitting on the earth anyway.
@luke8670 I think the caller is referring to Isaiah 40:22, where it mentions the 'circle' of the earth, which is a flat shape, not a sphere as we know the earth is, it's a misquote. He seems desperate to prove the bible has revealed science, in fact it runs contrary to known science. I agree that it would be hard to see the curvature of the earth from great heights, shame Matt wasn't on the show for that question...
@ianjrivers Thanks. But how can a circle be a flat shape? A circle with a visible atmosphere I mean. I take it there are talking about the ground which is the level flat shape.
@luke8670 I would understand the scripture reference to describe Earth as a circular flat shape , like a coin, facing up. these writers were just using their imagination to describe the world they saw.
@ianjrivers A circle is flat, the earth isn't... if they wanted to describe the earth as a sphere they would have said a ball... this shows the lack of scientific understanding they had back then...
they also said the Earth had four corners/edges and is on pillars... and that the wicked might get shaken off of it and fall off into space... can you explain that? Or what about the sun rising and setting and "hurrying" back to where it rises? And Earth not being able to move? We are on an orbit!
@ianjrivers yea sorry, I thought you were defending their use of the word "circle" and then I read the comments on page 2 and realized you didn't agree with it... my bad
For the record, the Bible doesn't say the Earth is a sphere, it refers to the "circle of Earth". People thought the Earth was flat and flat objects still have a shape. What were they to think that shape was? A parallelogram? A trapezoid? An octahedron?
No, a circle is the most natural shape so they thought the Earth was a DISC.
And the Earth isn't perfect for life, life is adapted to Earth's conditions.

@megadeth1056 It's not about gods powers, it's about the rubber ball which is a physical object with dimensions. First god would have to create space in which he could put the rubber ball. But that is just as difficult because space is also a physical object just like the rubber ball. So he would have to create space for the space for the rubber ball. I don't know if there's any argument that gets under my skin more than the "open mind" argument that Spence brought up.
The state of my mind, whether it be opened or closed, has no bearing on what is real. Why can't they get that? I mean, if I'm closed minded against gravity, will I shoot off into space?
"Yes, I am closed minded towards your backwards way of thinking, and GODDAMMIT, I am proud to be closed minded of that. Now, go away!"

I feel so sorry for this guys kids. Can you imagine how brainwashed they will be. I dont see this caller being able to explain other this as well (non-religious) can you imagine this called trying to explain other cultures to his children, or basic science. No Son the earthquake isnt plates moving. Its gods tummy ache. Or god mad that we dont worship him enough....an yes its a coincidence all earthquakes happen on faults Son.
To that last caller...they TRY to have an open dialogue with the callers, but it's the religious types that get in the way of that, not the host/co-host. Also, "open dialogue" does not mean that the person calling gets their own virtual pulpit to spew whatever nonsense they want...if they're talking out their ass (like most do), they'll get called on it
Wow. Sam, if you believe this is the only planet with life on it, why is that? Because there's no evidence of life elsewhere. If you can understand that , then you understand why atheists don't believe.
"It was only meant for life here" WOW can a sane reasonable human believe that in billions of galaxies each with millions of stars there is ONLY this one tiny grain of sand on an endless beach that has life? Can one get more stupid than that??
hahahahhahahah i can't even get past the first caller, just how he keeps stumbling and stuttering over all his words while he tries to think up something that might work.
I'm really beginning to think there needs to be a creationist time limit so much of these programs get wasted with listening to creationist talking points that everyone has heard before, just my opinion, creationist are a waste of valuable air time.
kudo's to the atheist experience guys, they need to defend so many areas of science and must know so many different things about it, good work i couldn't do it.
The egyptians figured out that the earth was round hundreds of years before the old testamente was written. Does that mean we should believe in Ra now?
I appreciate how all AE hosts can hear these arguments & not go balistic over the level of stupidity thrown at them. It isnt a skill I have. I cannot hear someone call this a Christian nation without expressing how much of a dumbass I think the caller is. That patience & humility itself is a skill. I would be a terrible, hostile host. Thankfully I dont have your job. But we appreciate it & keep up the good work.
POPULATION IS DEPENDENT ON FOOD SUPPLY! Ugh. If there's food supply for 1M people, and you have 2M people, then 1M people will starve to death. If you have food for 2M people, and only have a population of 1M, then the population will double very quickly. We have the number of people on this planet today not because people breed at a certain rate, we have a number of people on this planet because our FOOD SUPPLY has increased at a certain rate.
I challenge creationists to find one dating method that says the Earth is 6000 years old. Just know that if your method is "Biblical dating", then I WILL call you a moron and pelt you with tomatoes.
@naytyn These times are long past. The newest data are afaik from May 2010 and these are: 4.44...4.51 billion Y. That means an incertainty of just 70 million Y iow 1.5% this is AWESOME!
Did anyone consider that the Mt Etna carbon dating done by the creationist could be floored in the respect that Etna is a volcano... and is spewing new material all the time. The Dating methods we use today would show any basalt (igneous rock) to be young material if it was picked from a young area of the volcanos reach.
really ever given birth to a child? Design ain't perfect caller if there was we humans would birth children like marupials in a handy pouch rather than pushing out a baby thats the size of a melon through a space the size of a lemon.
@MsOneiroi77 "Design ain't perfect caller if there was we humans would birth children like marupials in a handy pouch rather than pushing out a baby thats the size of a melon through a space the size of a lemon."
Well according to the Bible that's all Eve's fault, not necessarily a design flaw.
When will people realise that using a philosophical concept/ political or cultural idea from a relgion is not the same as accepting the faith as a whole -
a good legal system should include 'thou shalt not kill/steal' and a good moral system could include 'do unto others...'. But some muslim ideas are also good too - community solidarity, yearly charitable donations etc. Some buddhist meditation techniques are useful.
NONE of these statements mean I accept any theist claims
All of those philosophical and humanist concepts exist independently of religion. What religion does is borrows common or inherent human ideas such as "do unto others" that are innate in us, injects its perspective and then tries to tell us those concepts are given to us by a god.
That alone would be bad enough, but the concepts tend to get corrupted in the process with inherent and immoral religious themes such as absolute morality, faith, dogmatic prejudice, etc.
@AntitheistPOV that is my point - people who suggest we would lose these in a world without religion, as if they are contingent on a faith-based worldview, are being ridiculous. However, because these ideas have been historically associated with religion it is necessary to explain to the religious that we are not 'borrowing' christian values - as some apologists would like to claim.
My Dog, how many times do they have to prove to these idiots that creationism is a load of bullcrap ?!? It's getting repetitive, even if the hosts are awesome. -_-
@tallskinnygeek contrast that with most thiest videos (that don't know how, or dont bother disabling the ratings) in a majority Christian nation. Most of those look like Sith Lightsabers!
OMFG, not only is there ACTUALLY an "Index of Creationist Claims" containing *every* creationist claim ever made AND its correct debunk, but Russell had a copy ON SET, *AND* was able to use it to head off at least one of dude's claims. OMFG, that is HILARIOUS! loo
Contd.. In addition, how do they retain such identities after transcendence from the body when it's already been exhibited that such are so very vulnerable to the physical world we know? Who are we without our minds(which are limited to the tangible realm.. which cant be contradicted since, as already stated, innate identity can flux based on external circumstance-external meaning beyond individual control and not necessarily outside self)
Id like to see a theist explain innate identity(term I just made up xD).. Personal identity/personality/inherent disposition that dictates the merit of their "souls" in terms of opening their door to heaven. Hormones, chemicals, synaptic interplays/interactions constitute a person's behavioral patterns. After an accident, disease, etc, ppl have done 180s in cognitive/mental/psychological exhibitions. So due to external circumstance they lose their pass to heaven?
I don't think the first caller's dumb at all. I actually think he was trolling them for all that time, and he's really an atheist himself. Kind of like those guys who call religious talk shows and act stupid on purpose. Or a kid who acts possessed for attention. If I'm wrong though, it's not the first time, but for me, being wrong means there will be somebody out there to correct me.
Hahaha....that caller was hilarious. He says that the universe looks young, and THEN after getting backed into a corner, he says, "it doesn't matter, because God made the universe with an appearance of age" to totally contradict his first statements.

There is a city called "Atlanta" and it did burn in the Civil War, ergo "Gone with the Wind" is a true story.
If God designed the universe and life so perfectly then why is Orion's belt crooked, and why do humans have tailbones?
Any "proof" that begins with "I believe" should go something like this:
Caller:"I can prove God exists because I believe..." *click* AE host: "Goodbye, Moron"
I've been reading the book "Liars for Jesus," which I recommend to any American.

What does it mean to say "keep people around who love you", if those people hate you for your atheism?
ProjectFreeSelf 3 months ago
Wow. Sam, if you believe this is the only planet with life on it, why is that? Because there's no evidence of life elsewhere. If you can understand that , then you understand why atheists don't believe.
mnkittel 3 months ago
"It was only meant for life here" WOW can a sane reasonable human believe that in billions of galaxies each with millions of stars there is ONLY this one tiny grain of sand on an endless beach that has life? Can one get more stupid than that??

YEs, it may be a pipe-dream, but it's a dream nonetheless.

@ElvisKnucklehead then TV producers would become involved and probably turn it into a sitcom...

Did anyone consider that the Mt Etna carbon dating done by the creationist could be floored in the respect that Etna is a volcano... and is spewing new material all the time. The Dating methods we use today would show any basalt (igneous rock) to be young material if it was picked from a young area of the volcanos reach.

NONE of these statements mean I accept any theist claims
discipleoftheteapot 4 months ago
@discipleoftheteapot
AntitheistPOV 3 months ago
@AntitheistPOV that is my point - people who suggest we would lose these in a world without religion, as if they are contingent on a faith-based worldview, are being ridiculous. However, because these ideas have been historically associated with religion it is necessary to explain to the religious that we are not 'borrowing' christian values - as some apologists would like to claim.

Contd.. In addition, how do they retain such identities after transcendence from the body when it's already been exhibited that such are so very vulnerable to the physical world we know? Who are we without our minds(which are limited to the tangible realm.. which cant be contradicted since, as already stated, innate identity can flux based on external circumstance-external meaning beyond individual control and not necessarily outside self)
xESOTERlC 4 months ago
Id like to see a theist explain innate identity(term I just made up xD).. Personal identity/personality/inherent disposition that dictates the merit of their "souls" in terms of opening their door to heaven. Hormones, chemicals, synaptic interplays/interactions constitute a person's behavioral patterns. After an accident, disease, etc, ppl have done 180s in cognitive/mental/psychological exhibitions. So due to external circumstance they lose their pass to heaven?
xESOTERlC 4 months ago
I don't think the first caller's dumb at all. I actually think he was trolling them for all that time, and he's really an atheist himself. Kind of like those guys who call religious talk shows and act stupid on purpose. Or a kid who acts possessed for attention.
