for any tone deaf people (like me) tune your A string to match the low E at 7th fret. tune your D string to the A string at the 5th fret. tune your G string to match the D at the 4th fret and bam! open E :)
I've been teaching myself for about 8 months now, largely through your videos they really are amazing. I love when I go into a guitar store and people ask how long I've been playing and seem shocked that I've been playing less than a year, mostly thanks to you Justin Keep up the good work!
Good job Justin! I taught myself this song back in '95 before youtube...so I had to read tabs which took forever. Anyway....I never used E7...I just played an Em over open E...think yours sounds better..thanks...
WATCHED MANY JUSTIN VIDS AND HE MAKES ME LAUGH IN EVERY ONE OF THEM WHILE TEACHING ME. THANK YOU JUSTIN FOR KEEPIN MY SPRITES UP WHEN FINGERS R CRYIN AT ME...
@myguitarism No this is a standard size guitar. As for size it depends on your size for most guys over like say 16 it would not make any difference, some girls like my daughter(11) finds it easier to play a standard size guitar that is a little thinner. I wouldn't really recomend a 1/2 size guitar if you are still that small I would say learn ukele first. Both my 6 and 12 are jumbos and that was just a coincidence and I am a fairly small adult man about 5''6" and have no trouble.
@myguitarism What is most important is sound and feel....... play a hole bunch at the music store even if you are not very good. and just see what you like. The smaller guitars I find don't have as nice a sound and when you outgrow it you willl need to by another.
i did find it better to play the chorus in open chords though, the b is kind of a dm shape on the 2nd fret then the a is a d shape leaving the bottom e open played a fret below a normal tuning d. sounds much better than barring the 7th and 5th and allows you to incorporate riffs.
hope this makes sense and thanks again for posting this , ive been wanting to learn this for a long time now.
Thanks for the great instructions! I had always liked this tune and had the main melody down but never could pick out the other licks .. I especially am having fun with the 'reverse grip' that you show .. that works well for me. I play this in 'D' tuning and it works. Go Well Mate
The resonance of that guitar is awesome. Never heard of a maton until I started watching you. How much does that messiah run in u.s. If you don't mind me asking.
Hey Justin thanks for the wonderfull lessons you have really help improve my playing. Hey on that main riff try playing the A69 chord instead of the E6sus4.
Its the same shape except you add the ring finger down on the high small E string. I personally think it sound a little better and more like the actual song. Tell me what you think.
To say that anyone thing is correct in fingering over another is just stupid. If a person can use a non-conventional technique and it works and they still get the playing right then it is not incorrect. Any teach that tells you that their way is the right way and the only way is not a teach they are a tyrant. You will not find Justin doing that on any of these video's. If that is what you think creativity is... a finger in the right or wrong place then you need to spend more time considering it
Justin, you are hands down the best teacher on YouTube (and I'm sure in person, as well). Thank you for all of your hard work. And by the way, you have a bangin' voice, and singing along really helps me to learn the song. Thanks again!
Hey Justin. I was told not to tune UP a guitar because it puts to much stress on the truss rod and ruins the sound of the guitar once you tune back down. I play this song, but I tune in open D (DADF#AD) and put a capo on the 2nd fret. It's exactly the same without tuning up the guitar.
What can you not reach , is it the singing or the guitar , because you can be as good on guitar as most people maybe not as good as Justin but the singing , some people are born to sing but the more you sing the better you will get.You can always tune ur guitar down half step to help singing it might not sound like much but it will help singin for sure. Singing in standard tuning is a toughie , I know how you feel.
Hey Justin great vid as usual! Thought I'd suggest maybe doing a lesson on In Bloom by Nirvana sometime? I've got the chords down but having trouble figuring out the strumming and its really bugging me now! There are videos of it already but no-one does a good job of explaining things properly unlike yourself!
This is not commenting on this video, but as everyone is commenting on singing I thought I would ask a question.
How does one practise singing and playing at the same time? I've been playing for a year now but find it extremely difficult to sing while playing - even with songs I know by heart. Any tips?
The only thing I know for sure is that you have to be 100% cool with both parts before you put them together, at least when you start out. Nowdays I can play and sing quite difficult bits as long as I am confident with the guitar, I can stick that on autopilot and think about the vocal. I have been researching this and will try and do a lesson on it soon. J
I'm always a wee bit nervous tuning up strings without slacking others, so I tuned down to D (D A D F# A D) and just put my trusty capo on the second fret. Plus, I'm super broke until next month and even spending money on strings right now should be avoided. :-)

It's a lot easier to tune to open D (DADF#AD), and capo at the second fret. At least, that's the way Rich Robinson plays it live.

The Open E tuning can be a real string buster. Try tuning to Open D (DADF#AD) and capoing at the second fret.
