Democracy, like any other system in the universe, is only as good as the people within it. Whatever system is in place, if the people have no integrity - vote in retards, etc. - it won't work. The system doesn't matter. The integrity level of the people does. That said, some systems are better than others and democracy is pretty good if the people have integrity.

Well, according to the U.S. Constitution, we have a republic, not a democracy. But in reality, yes we now have a democracy in the U.S. It sucks. 51% of the people can take away the rights of the other 49% in a democracy. In republics, tyrants have to work a little bit harder to oppress the minority.
But, if any system of government fails, it's because the people have failed to keep it honest.
