if the rounds are, as you said, years old, i would imagine that the military probably doesnt want their guys using ammo that could potentially malfunction due to its age. I'm not an expert and i have no clue what the "shelf life" of a bullet might be, but it would cost even more money to gather all the unused rounds and send them somewhere to be processed and recycled.. Better to just use them one way or another and get new ones.

Agree with the info posted on the video. If we were allotted 11,000 rounds for a range and turned in 2,000 unfired, the next time we drew ammo we'd only get 9,000, true story. Therefore, after any M-60 qualification, we had "familiarization fire", which equated to expending any remaining ammo any safe way we choose, i.e. Shooting from the hip ala Rambo, practicing different shooting techniques, whatever. Just so long as we turned in nothing but brass. It's the bureaucracy, plain and simple...

@JCRIV8406 It was not a possibility for us to burn up a barrel. The gun has a 600 round burst limit, and our ammo cans only hold 300 rounds with 1-2 minutes to change a can. In 5 years of flying with that weapon system, I never heard of a barrel being ruined by the gunner.

I was thinking about it, and it just isn't possible to attach a device for this particular gun. A catcher would have to be solid, a bag wouldn't work in the heavy winded slipstream back there, and it would have to be mounted flush with the bottom of the receiver/under the bolt. Not possible because anything mounted under would not allow it to be aimed down

Te reason why the barrel if perforated is because the gun is stationed on a moving vehicle and the cool air moving pass will remove large amounts of heat and the perforating will cool the gun down faster.
