... the rapid steering movement is somewhat a trademark of Kaufmann and can be seen on many onboard videos. The question whether he is any faster or slower than drivers with calmer steering input pretty much depends on the car, setup and tires.
I personally think the RSR and the track is too fast for him. I am surprised about his erratic steering correction and a bit too much time between lifting off gas and on. Spa Francorchamp is a very fast and difficult circuit and he is fast but not fast enough.
Wolfgang has Cojones! my friend he just needs to find a better and faster line. There driver to driver, no put downs and no disrepect, the car is amazing,. I'd be honord to drive that machine. See you at the track !!
Wolfgang has Cojones! my friend he just needs to find a better and faster line. There driver to driver, no put downs and no disrepect, the car is amazing,. I'd be honord to drive that machine. See you at the track !!
Whoa... It really looks like the steering is totally off! It shouldn't be neccesary correcting the wheel that much... I mean, it's a race car, and it should be precise. I know race cars are alive and that you constantly have to correct, but that... Looks like that steering needs some finetuning
I'm thinking the same as everyone else, The steering looks super loose. Shouldn't be having to tweak it like that to get it to follow his apex. Probably why that Ferrari 360 that started in front of him, dusted his ass.
I dont give a shit who he's the chief pilot for.....this is not normal....he must be fighting an ill-handling car....looks like its pushing. Some of what you're seeing is simply kickback through the wheel. Watch a guy like Pat Long.....few if any better in an RSR. He's light years smoother on his inputs.
An intellegent driver would have set up the car so that they would not have to saw unecessarily back and forth. Smoothness is the key, and this driver is lacking it compared to most others at this level.
I'm no pro driver but did anyone else realize he turns in too early and too sharp on a handful of turns causing him to go over the curb with his inside front wheel?
At this level they wouldn't employ an unskilled driver. Some drivers deliberately employ a sawing action like this in order to prevent oversteer on corner exits.
I watched the whole thing, and couldnt help but thinking he was far too jerky on the wheel. id put it down to either not looking far enough ahead thus making him have to make quick adjustments all the time, or theres way too much tow out making it really sensitive to drive. or he has waaay too much money and cant drive at all. the other cars made him look like he was standing still. smoooth grasshopper smooooooth
i think its to allow the car to flow thru the corners faster, I dont know i could be wrong mate, But other than that, I think he's good none the less.
Bit late, but its maybe down to the cars setup, or he ran a longer stint on harder rubber, and those heat up marginly slower, an till they reach their operating temperature its like driving on ice.
It's as far as I can tell a way of making minute steering corrections through cornering, different set-ups can change how much you do it, but its very hard to corner at those speeds accurately without needing adjustments, and it also seems to make the car 'bite' better on the track. Depends moderately on set-ups to mind you.
At the adhesion limit you can saw the wheel like that and the car won't turn in any more. Notice how the car isn't reacting to his steering angle? That's how he knows he's getting the most out of the corner. I would think that would eat and overheat the front tires after continuously doing that, but Porsches always need rears pretty quick.
It looks like its purely his style of driving rather than a poor set up. Hes hardly going to go out to set a time with his car behaving like this if its unintended.
U know i am talking about the greatest racing simulator right? FIA GTR 2... its based on this league, example you can drive this wolfgang kaufmanns GT3 RSR. This is the simulator that many real Racers from GT1 / GT2 / NGT leagues use to shape up before a real shape up and race! So im sorry to say, YES its similar to Reality...
Don't be stupid, it's on a computer... This is on a real circuit. I know what you mean, they use the simulator to aclimatise to circuit, etc. But, that is done to enhance the skills, it's called computerized training. We use it too for our drivers, but ask any of them, it's not a realistic example, it's only used as a cheap way of practicing the hand/eye skills needed.
I understand what you mean, but you really need to try GTR 2... its not a kids game and its REALLY tough, its not a Gran Turismo / Forza / Need For Speed kindoff "simulator".
The simulator has been helped enhanced by real FIA GT drivers to make sure its similar to reality... even the advanced settings you can do to a car like toe-in, camber, tires, tire pressure effects, tires and so on and damage effects and aerodynamics and so on and so on. You need to try this "game"...
Ihave it . i also have GT 4 on my PS2 but nothing can be compared to reality. Even if you put all the games in the world all together it still would be no mach for the reality. If you say that games are similar to reality then you must have never driven a proper car.
I do use GTR2, but it isn't anything like the real thing, intrinsically it cant be. It's graphics produced by a computer, and is intended as a simulation. The drivers do help develop it to give it some realism, but the fact is that being strapped into a REAL racing car, with REAL G-Forces, and real braking/accelerating/gear changes/setup variations can never be precisely replicated by a game. The game acts as a model of the layout of a circuit, and the general reaction of a car, but thats it.
Good god who set this car up!! This car is handling very poor the guy has to fight the car thru every turn and gets passed 2 times at the end of lap 1 & even hits the first car that passes him. I have been racing Porsche 996 rsr as an amateur for over 8 years now and I have never seen a guy have to fight the wheel so hard. But then again all my cars are set up by Rothsport motorsports and Jeff Gamroth Alex Job Racings old crew chief.
It's not a badly setup car at all. If you look at any other video with Wolfgang Kaufmann driving, you'll see it's his driving style. He likes lots of lock, so he can really saw at the wheel to get the feel of the car. Not how I or many other do it, but it obviously works for him.
The amount of correction that he's doing is pretty extreme, but to drive a car truly at its limit, you need to constantly correct for slight understeer/oversteer. As some racing drivers say- "My driving might look smooth from the outside, but inside I'm constantly making small steering and throttle corrections to keep the car on the track" If you don't have to do this in a car, you aren't driving at it's true limit.
A bit agressive on the steeringwheel I think, overall good piloting, nice reaction @ the end of blanchimont (1ste lap) getting a quick gear lower to regain motricity at the end of the curve! Thx for the images Spa is such a nice track
You guys are amazing. Clever comments...

Probably true, although I;ve heard he uses a looser steering wheel then most and thats why he's making such big corrections.
