  • One of the most nuanced deeply felt text based renditions I have heard. Vickers gets it right, the pathos, the despair, the grief, but with a philosophical eloquence that captures the original Chinese verse. His mature (decayed) voice just adds depth to the reading. Brilliant! Rattle is completely with him too in following his spirit. Now up there with Walter's recordings and live ones and Horenstein and Bernstein's and Klemperer and Abbado for me. Amazing.

  • Vickers is one of the GREAAAAAATest tenors of all time. This performance is 10 years past his prime. Imagine if it had been 20 years earlier.

  • Greatful for this upload but WHY is it out of sync.

  • Not Good. he can't even hold his score in a proper way. Listen to Jimmy King or Wunderlich in this.

  • Only Wunderlich will do. The recording with Christa Ludwig and Klemperer is probably my favourite recording of anything ever.

  • The sound of his score being held wrong does grate on my ears so.

  • Concerts of this sort, oratorios, cantatas, etc are often performed with the book. Notice some films of Messiah,Requiems, etc.

  • Why didn't Vickers have a stand for the music score, or better, sing it by memory? A person of his stature and past artistry should have been more convincing. It was as though he didn't put his resources into it, a disappointment.
