Itachi had alot more power in him, after all he is stronger than orochimaru, tsunade, and jiraiya. Jiraiya could handle 3 tails, orichimaru 4, and itachi maybe 5 ( based on that he is more powerful than orochimaru. The only reason he dies to sasuke is because he sustained some sort of damage before the fight, which crippleed his abilities enough for him so get hit by techniques and jutsus that he would normaly dodge. Not to mention he was going to win before he collapsed in front of sasuke.

spoiler: orichimaru is still alive but he is really weak, sasuke is fine too and he returns to konoha, but villagers think him as an enemy and many try to kill him so sasuke went back and created his own hideout
