Smith and Marx were the most adoring Tom and Margo that were ever in these roles - I witnessed all three.... I remember this episode so well. The aftermath of the Douglas Cummings murder was about to explode. I credit head writer Doug Marland for this shows amazing run from aprox. 1984-95. It was "must see television". This show faltered for one simple reason -- around 1999, the head honchos destroyed the core fabric of this show only to replace it with boring teenagers. It NEVER recovered.
@TimsDale4ever I'd say the teens were essential in a sense, because they were characters who needed to grow up at some point. In 1999 that would have been Adam, Jennifer, Christopher and Abigail. They still interacted with their families, but by this point the writing didn't really support good umbrella stories besides Carly's quest to get pregnant. There were some questionable executive producers from 1995 until then also. They didn't have a special touch either, so good acting still suffered.
I've been researching the "good ol' days" of ATWT (& I want to do the same with GL).... This ATWT is one i've been wanting to see since i started this little project but i don't know much about the storylines going on at the time since i was only a little over a yr old when this originally aired, so can someone fill me in? Thanks.... (btw, this is also the 1st theme i remember & my fav of them all!)
@lizzysan22 The Snyders were new to ATWT and Lucinda just discovered her connection to them through Lily. Barbara went from victim to vixen after Brian McColl got close to Shannon, so she shook up Tom & Margo's marriage. Sierra married Tonio after learning that the truth of Lucinda being her mother was kept secret by Craig. Kim thought Frannie killed Douglas Cummings, so she claimed the blame as self defense (but the case was far from over). Those are the big stories at this point in 1986.
Well, I loved Margaret Colin, but I could never forget Hillary B Smith. I did grow to accept Ellen Dolan, and she certainly deserved to be there on the last day. Gosh, I am so grateful to be able to look back!!!
@CarlD2 I watched three Margos. I never could choose. ATWT really chose some amazing actresses. I think you have to take a special acting test to play Margo.
@soaploversuniversity Hmm. I think most of them perfected either the serious policewoman personality or the impulsive busybody. Ellen Dolan is the only one who fused the two for me.
@Oakdalian Ellen Dolan is the only Margo i really remember bc i was too young to really notice Hillary B. Smith in the role & although i was older when Glynnis O'Connor appeared during Ellen Dolan's year absence, i don't really remember her either.... Ellen Dolan is the only Margo for me and Scott Holmes the only Tom! (He is the only Tom I know since Gregg Marx vacated the role and turned it over to Scott when i was 1-2 yrs. old)
My mother Betty, who died in 2005, used to listen to As The World Turns when it was on the radio. She watched the show from its beginning in black and white until her stroke in 2004.
She knew how to pick a winner. ATWT was the top rated American soap from 1958 to 1978, and Y&R will probably celebrate a 20 year run at the top in 2009.
Yeah on CBS it was number#1 before Y&R came along it's sad that the raitings have slipped on this soap but thats the case with current soaps these days!
I miss this show

I love the reaction Roy and Hal have after Hobson tells them not to say anything to Margo.
