  • "Qu'ils mangent de la brioche"

  • I feel like it doesn't matter whether or not she said it. Many authors will tell you that fiction can be "truer" than fact. This line was meant to encompass who Marie Antoinette was and to emphasize that she did not care about her subjects, or at least that she was not at all in touch with them.

  • She shouldn't be killed because it wasn't that she didn't love her people. She was just stupid and didn't realise what the situation of the country was.

  • is her friend...TEXTING ON THE BED O.O

  • @SoKawaii2 no ,she was reading from a piece of paper.

  • @CaramelCleo i assumed but it still looked like it :3

  • @SoKawaii2 no shes reading a note of some kind

  • This movie was absolutely horrible and received awful reviews.

  • yes someone actually wants me to eat cake!! thank god!!!! as a runner this is hard to do

  • i think that in a way, it was nice to say this. poor people could not buy bread, so she wanted to give them a nicer alternative; cake x

  • the thousand that went to the guilotine were not the servants of the ancien regime, it was the victims of marat's and robespierre's terror regime that came later. Marie Antoinette was demonized and used as a scapegoat to satisfy the mob that began to see executions as an entertainment..pane et circenses. the Terror did not end until ALL of the revolution leaders lost their heads.

  • I don't care if that over pampered "royal" dip-sh*t said that or not, I'm still glad she went to the guillotine, with the company of thousands of other deserving morons.

Those idiotic "royals" were "chosen by divine right" by some soppy pope to rule millions? To be pampered and catered to and to have their every perverted, evil, greedy desire attended to at the cost of heavy taxation on the suffering people.

They got the surprise of their useless lives when the blade came whistling down. Ha!

  • She did actually say 'let them eat cake' But what she meant was 'Let them eat bread'. Its just the English translate

  • @chloebooth1234 Um, no. She was never that obnoxious .

  • what would happen if Obama said to the middle class "let them eat cake". Euphemism for "poor working our welfare loopholes and the rich getting tax breaks". I'm telling ya, if he wants a successful 2012 campaign...lol

  • It's "let them eat brioche" and it was said 100 years before her. There is no evidence to support that she said it.

  • Let me get this straight!!!'

first of all, I do admire her as well.

But let me get one thing straight, she actually said it because she couldn't handle the gossip from the mobs anymore. But in real events she said "If you can't buy a bread, buy a cake!" she said it because the mobs keep complaining that the bread price is too high and they can't even eat bread anymore (which is one of their main food).

so she did say it, but with different sentences.

  • @cliffto6 SHE NEVER SAID IT AT ALL! It was added into the film as a way of showing how people thought marie antoinette acted but most people didnt realise that, and they took it for truth.

  • Comment removed

  • @kingofcouture1996 well actually, there are two versions of this statement. One side said that she didn't say anything like that, while on the other side some people tell that Antoinette was repeating what this previous princess of Spain has said. Well we can't really knows the truth at all. But either she said it or not, this still a good movie :)

Let's not make this as a big deal.

  • @cliffto6 Im sorry, but for me people making marie antoinette look like an evil bitch when she was really a highly misunderstood person, she wasnt an angel but she wasnt the devil either..

  • Comment removed

  • @kingofcouture1996 i wasn't try to make her look like an evil bitch, ur point on view on me is. Also like I said on the first time, she said it because she was defending herself. Once again there are 2 types of this story. I myself who learn it for years never 100% sure bout both types, when you talk about history you can't say "it's 100% true". It's basic learning about history. I do admire her as well, I was just try to explain the other version, History is huge, there are lots of arguments.

  • @cliffto6 I never said "you" i meant people in general. And most facts point to marie antoinette being a good women who was not at all ignorant.

  • @kingofcouture1996 I know she was just a victim of politics, both she and her husband. Marie is just a normal teenage girl who like to spend money to shopping spree like girls nowadays. Which kid that wouldn't be teased by many lots of money to spend? beside she doesn't have any politic education. And her husband, is a very introvert person who were being intimidate by all politicians. She does spend the public money, but she was tricked. So this isn't all 100% her fault.

  • @cliffto6 Then people often rage at her spending money on clothing, when it was expected of the queen of france (fashion center of the world) not to wear the same gown twice. Its also a lie that she spent lots on jewelery, the only jewelery she liked where chandelier earings, and she often traded her old jewels to buy new ones.

  • @kingofcouture1996 yeah i know right, i think it's all just like nowadays, once the citizen dislike their leader, they will make rumors, gossips, and try to knock em down. I mean they started hate and not trust Marie since the first time she came to Versailles, it's because French and Austria was almost made a war. French back then was so wild.

  • Love that american twang. *sighs*

  • She meant let them eat cake off her ass after she was guillotined...

  • My history teacher said that she replied "If you don't have bread, eat croissants"

  • lol who cares if she said this or not?? Guys, listen to me, the cake is a lie

  • @BowToMySkill - Marie Antoinette is a SPY!

  • who in the fuck cares if she said let them eat cake or not SHIT

  • i´m eating cake right now !

  • Even though Marie Antoinette never said that, I really like the way that scene was shot.

  • A lot of people need to get over the fact that this film was not historically accurate. It was a work of fiction that happened to use an actual historic figure as its main character. Films are made to entertain us. Who cares if it isn't historically accurate? Jeez.

  • @Dank951 for a film believe it or not it was pretty accurate in some points. :)

  • @LiveJoyDivision True, I was just kind of irritated that some people (particularly History fanatics) are upset over this film because it isn't "accurate"...I thought the film was fun to watch :)

  • @Dank951 It was actually based on the book written by Antonio Fraser who is a historian. The book is dry with facts. True Antoinette was a figure to blame on the war, but the problem was there before she was married to King Louis the XVI. The couple just didn't know how to handle a bad economy at such a young age.

  • OH NO NO NO NO SHE OFFERED THE FRENCH PEOPLE CAKE A VERY TASTY AND SWEET PASTRY AND THE PEASANTS WANT DISGUSTING BREAD THAT TASTES VERY BLAN AND GROSS HOW STUPID ARE THESE PEOPLE

  • Apparently she never actually said that. Pfff gossip and inflated rumor eh?

  • it's true that she never actually said that. the media of that time were the same as the media of ours days, filled with slander and biased views.

  • I came here just to see this vid and got stucked in reading lazy comments from "someone" who should use his prozac more often..

  • No, No, No, This is false. Its a myth. It was actually said by one of Louis XIV's ministers. In her diary Marie wrote she was concerned for the welfare of the lower classes during food shortages.

Unfortunately she, her husband and most other french nobility thought someone else shoudl do it. Apathy kills.

Sounds very much like today! WE LOOK TO THE GOVERNMENT TO HELP THE NEEDY INSTEAD OF SOCIETY!

  • The cake is a lie

  • @9753241860hb Damn straight!

  • She didnt say this.

  • she never said that

  • Comment removed

  • Marie n'a jamais dit cela, c'est un mensonge! Il n'existe aucune preuve de cela.

  • But actually she never said that. It is a quote Jean Jacques Rousseau attributed to a princess who had been alive about 100 years before Marie Antoinette.

  • Qu`il mangent du gateau!

  • i really dont believe she said that....she had enough since to know better.

  • @chykim1 She didn't say it...

  • @bwoodsfinest she did say it... but cake is a bad translation wat she sayed was Qu’ils mangent de la brioche. She had no idea wat happen outside her castle

  • @UnderDog988 Actually no she didn't. Not only is the phrase mistranslated, it was misquoted.

  • @bwoodsfinest Your telling me that a little spoiled girl who became queen when she was 19 and all she did was party and waste all of france money and then CAUSED the french revolutions. With all this it isnt possible that she was so spoiled and stupid that she could say something like that dude...

No one can prove she sayed it, no one can prove she didnt that truth but she probably did cause she is stupid and spoiler and a whore and a cunt and a bitch and she fucked over thousand of people

  • @UnderDog988 And you know she had countless sexual relations because she told you? That's speculation.Your right no one can prove what she SAID(sayed isn't a word). Yes she may have been SPOILED(spoiler isn't an adjective) and there's nothing wrong with that. They were ill prepared and to young to reign. They were merely children, barely adults with any knowledge as to the makings of running a country. They messed up. You're acting as though they personally affected you. Calm down.

  • @bwoodsfinest They personally affected me cause i have morals, she was a bitch who lives life in luxury emptying all of france money while all the peasent starve and fight each other to live THAT IS FUCKED. Think the pain and sufuring....

  • @UnderDog988 Having morals has nothing to do with this. You need to take a seat in a history class and learn about what factors had France drowning in debt in that period. Her excessive spending didn't even put a dent in it. you are not affected by this in the least. I feel bad for the people who lived in that time but Marie's spending wasn't the cause of the financial crisis in France. Know of what you speak before you open your mouth.

  • @bwoodsfinest Feel bad for the people lived in that time? fuck off you have no idea what was going on to you the condition were like now... Yes She brought the revolution. Yes she did bad spending but that the main point, the point if just knew nothing of economic and did nothing the help fixes the problems. When i say she empty frances money i dont mean by partying and drinking wines i mean by making bad political desicions... Learn history and wat she did to the country

  • @UnderDog988 Oh and you were around in those times to know what was going on?You do realize how ridiculous you sound right? I know my history.Clearly you've little knowledge of French history. I'll make myself look a fool if continue this back and forth nonsense with someone who's incapable of exercising proper grammar and can't express their emotions without using vulgar terminology.Good day child.

  • @bwoodsfinest Realy your going to insult my grammar... Dude that just annocing that you just have no idea how to defend your ideas so you focus on the trivial. Do need to be there to know wat happened? No people have kept track of history, unless you mean that all of human history is base on false information... Also we have perfect exemple in are time of true poverty althought not as bad as back then. There country were diactory make people starve and fight for the lives.

  • @UnderDog988 I can insult your lack of grammar as I see fit. Yes people have kept track of history which you are evidently dismissing. From your responses it is clear you have formulated opinion and have accepted it as the truth instead of going by what has been recorded in history books. Again child, good day.

  • @bwoodsfinest Haha what arrogance, like i sayed before you insult my grammar just prove you cant defend your ideas. What exactly is my idea, that marie antoinette with her bad political decision help bring down france. Yes france had many enemys, but it the succession of bad leader that made it crumble.

Research Napoleon and you will find out that previous leader could of done so much more for france. He cleared all there enemys and restablished france the dominate force.

  • @UnderDog988 I insulted your grammar because it irked me, not because I can't defend my knowledge. Trying to have an intellectual conversation with someone who type like 8th grader is off putting. You also seem to believe what you are saying is the absolute truth. Things you were saying were so off it's ridiculous. Marie wasn't the sole cause of the collapse of France. You can believe it if you want to or not.

  • @bwoodsfinest There reason for everything... You ever stop to thinking hey maybe not everyone come form the US? Dude am form quebec my main language is french. I learn to type form the internet. I never learned grammar or spelling it all self thought... And i think it pretty dam good for self thought.

I never sayed she was the sole collaspe i sayed france collaspe form a bad success on ruler and she was part of it

  • @UnderDog988 Saying this spoiled little girl caused one of the greatest revolutions of history is just stupid. Marie Antoinette was only a lousy queen, but nothing more. She is only popular because she somehow managed to remain oblivious and apolitical to everything that was happening around her. But the truth is, France had bigger problems than an extravagant queen.

  • @lanquide Ever heard of napoleon bonaparte? France had enemys every were and yes france was in a horrible state but napoleon bonaparte fixed it all and restablished it as the main force in europe.

It not marie antoinette that am hating ( althought she was one of the worse ) it the success of bad kings france had that i am hating. People who emptyed frances money and made the people suffer.

  • @UnderDog988 Marie Antoinette did not cause the French Revolution. The French Revolution was caused by financial debt due to costly wars with half the continent of Europe as well as aiding the Americans; as well as building resentment towards landholding nobility and the Catholic Church.

  • If I'd have made the decision as to whether I'd watch 'Marie Antoinette' or not based on this clip the result would have been 'not'. She sounds far too American, strangly though she doesn't if you watch it in context as part of the entire film.

  • mais alors donnez leur du gateau! llol

  • mais alors donnez leur du gateau! llol

  • She actually never said that.

  • @MsLalalallalalallall yes she did.. i know this cause i need to tell the story of marie in front of my class..but actually she said something like this :" so people doesn't have bread? let them eat cake! ..i'm not sure..:/ :D

  • @thaisnasser97 Nope. She never said that. Jean Jacques Rousseau wrote that a princess had once said that.... 20 years before the revolution even started. So it is impossible for her to have said that. People just accepted it as true because it sounds like something she would say. She even says in the movie that she didn't say it! And its a joke because it is totally something she would say, even though she didnt say it.

  • @MsLalalallalalallall Ever seen the movie "The Man who shot Liberty Valance? " There was a great quote, "When the Legend becomes fact, print the legend." The "Let them eat cake" (or "Qu’ils mangent de la brioche." in French.) is just another example of the legend becomming fact. It didn't happen, but it was printed anyway.

  • @MsLalalallalalallall i know she didn' said it .. just yes you are right. everyone thought she would say something like this... but even if true or not the best thing what she ever did was before she died---> her last word were " Pardon Monsieur" after she "accidentally" stood on the foot of the executioner :D she was a good girl :D

  • it wasnt cake! it was eclairs! lol hahah

  • Marie Antoinette: "Let them eat cake, GLaDoS, PLEASE? Haven't they earned it?"

  • She NEVER said that.

  • LMAO I would be like this if I was queen.

But to be honest, this portrayal is soo inaccurate, she most likely neversaid this. She also didn't really indulge, she was thin, she never ate and she also stayed in her country out of loyalty when there was a revolution, she loved France and the politicans set her up.

  • she never said that, it was said long before she was born

  • despite saying it or not its such an awsome quote

  • There's actually no historical reference that Marie Antoinette said this.

  • @MultiMissLucy this movie doesn't seem very accurate in the first place anyways though.

  • @forevermariott It's not. Like in the movie they had 3 children and the third one dies. When actually they had 4 and the fourth dies. They didn't even get eh number of kids right and the kids were mearly props anyways, so want would it be the add one more.

  • @MultiMissLucy Yes, I've read two biographies of antoinette, and the statement has actually been linked to some other royal who lived before her. For some bizarre reason it got attributed to her. I sort of hated this movie because it did absolutely nothing to redeem Marie Antoinette, when it had a great opportunity!

  • @MultiMissLucy Agreed. Why would she say ''let them eat cake'' Anyways?

  • @TheBumbleBunny I guess they found this "untrue" quote appropriate since it underlines the "true" image that the people had of their queen; a foreigner more wont to spend money on frivolities and luxuries than on matters concerning them, and so a woman who understood so little of the French people's needs and desires that, in a crisis, she tells them "Can't afford bare necessities? Try luxuries, that's what I live on."

It's a good addition, imo. Like putting Elizabeth in a suit of armor; vivid.

  • @MultiMissLucy "The cake is a lie"

  • @MultiMissLucy Actually it that was said why the wife of King Louis XIV nearly a century before... and a book mentioned this being said by a "great French princess" when Marie Antoinette was eleven, before she was the Dauphine of France and she was still an Austrian Duchess

  • Lol, she just says it like she doesn't give a shit.

  • its juz a myth :) aint truee

  • "Let them eat cake."

    ROFL. Epic.

  • @BowToMySkill THE CAKE IS A PIE

  • Kirsten Dunst is beyond gorgeous!

  • That's what she said!

  • cake is the left over dough on a baking pan from breads and baked goods.

  • @BowToMySkill

In fact it wasn't a cake, but a croissant.

  • @BowToMySkill but the pie is a fake....

  • legendary!!!!!!!!!!!

  • YAY CAKE!

  • sorry i thought the first one didn't upload properly :(

  • It was Louis XIV fat wife Maria Theresa who said it! :)

  • @thethistleandtherose Maria Theresa was the wife of Francis and the mother of Marie Antoinette, Marie Antoinette is the one who was married to louis XIV

  • @pheonixmon1 I think you have your roman numerals and historical figures mixed up, Marie Antoinette married Louis XVI, Maria Theresa married Louis XVI's great-great-great grandfather The Sun King Louis XIV

  • @pheonixmon1 you have your historical figures and roman numerals mixed up, Marie Antoinette married Louis XVI X = 10 VI = 6, Maria Theresa is a Spanish princess daughter of Philip IV of Spain who married the sun king Louis XIV IV = 4 they are the great-great-great grandparents of Louis XVI

  • altough she never said that, it kind of fits her :D

  • she never really said this.

  • Kirsten Dunst was DIVINE in this film, and the makeup in this scene is gorgeous!

  • I wanna see this soo bad hopefully the lobar has it

  • "It's suuuuch a nonsense! I wouldn't, like, wear that kind of lipstick, it's soooo gross".

  • @xwexarexbulletsx

dude are u crazy.. who doesn't want a blowjob from her HAHHAHAHA

  • Whether or not marie antionette said this, I don't think it was meant as an insult. Itwas mearly a suggestion that if they are out of bread, they should eatsomething else.

  • @Agentseaturtle I disagree. Considering she was the soberan, she only showed a naive yet irresponsible reply. The monarchy weren't fully interested on their peasants anyway, but Marie Antoinette (asuming she said this, of course) only showed she wasn't fully aware of the misery on France (No bread, no cakes-- DUH!).

The movie picture that well, as she lived hedonist and wasteful over her loneliness and then POP suddenly is a queen, and then POP suddenly the people rise against everything.

  • she ate the guillotine ha ha ha

    conservatives take heed--you are next

  • The actual phrase attributed to Marie Antoinette is, "Qu’ils mangent de la brioche," or , "Let them eat brioche." Brioche is a rich bread made of eggs, flour and sugar, reserved for royalty at the time. The slur was attributed to a "great princess", who, out of ignorance or callousness, said it when she heard about the famine among the poor. Rousseau wrote it in his Confessions, and the xenophobic French used it against the Queen to slander her for being extravagant and uncaring.

  • @DblC3 Also the french still hated Austria so they would find any rumor such as her being constantly intimatly active, but the only relationship she had was with her family. So the cake rumor was another to bring "L'Autrichienne"which in the mean joke the french started means "the austrian bitch".

  • @DblC3 NEEERD!

  • @sonjapunk2 I'll take that as a compliment!

  • @DblC3 naaah im just pissing you off

  • Comment removed

  • this clip makes me want to see this movie

  • @FaerieRose23 You should its realy good! You learn so much on what she has gone through.

  • Comment removed

  • @BowToMySkill lmao

  • This scene is actually accurate. Marie Antoinette never said 'let them eat cake'.

  • i can't stand kirsten dunst's voice

just the way she annunciates things and her odd accent and everything

i am so irritated by it

  • Marie NEVER said "Let them eat cake!" She loved her people too much for that and actually did notice their suffering.

  • Hahaha :D Marie

  • qu'ils mangent de la brioche =D

  • 0:08-0:11 da best

  • LOL my second favorite scene of the movie! luv the makeup and her costume. I heard Rose Bryne is in this!!!!

  • Fuck Marie Antoinette!

    Long live Robespierre!

  • @AndrewMann552 Fuck you

  • @fPaRamORe25 thank you for showing the I.Q. level of the kind of people who want feudalism back!

  • @AndrewMann552 I see, as you know perfectly the reasons for Robespierre.....¿¿??was only for REVENGE

  • @fPaRamORe25 You are correct in this way...the French people wanted revenge for years of abuse and starvation imposed by worthless monarchs, oligarchs and aristocrats!

  • @fPaRamORe25 I see you live in Mexico, so you know what it's like to be in a country where 1% owns everything while everyone else lives like shit.

  • @AndrewMann552 I dont live like a shit, but, if you live like a shit, is not my problem

  • adorable

  • I LOVE her lipstick.

  • CAKE? let them eat crevettes remoulade or maybe gumbo creole !!

    Laissez les bons temps rouler!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I L-O-V-E This Movie SO Much!

  • I wonder if she ever read about a woman named Anne Boleyn.

  • what about her?

  • @Messylin what about anne boleyn?

  • @solush she was king henry's wife after he broke away from the church he eventually sentenced her to death

  • @Messylin What about her?

I guess she was in a similar situation, where her country absolutely despised her, but that was just about the only comparison between them.

  • In lolcat: LET DEM EAT CAEK.

  • LEGENDARY!!!!!!!!
