This was a great samurai drama but.. only one minus: personally for me the twists and evolving of the story was a bit complex at times. I couldn't keep up with the pace of the plot with it's twists. Maybe I didn't maintain my focus 100% on the movie though. Otherwise very nice movie, I recommend!
I own this movie and watch it from time to time. It has GREAT acting and a heartbreaking ending! Kiichi Nakai became one of my favorite foreign actors after I watched it. Just wish I could find more of his movies!
the only problem i see with this movie is the fact that the samurai keep blocking blade to blade that is a huge no no in any form sword fighting including kenjutsu
@mooncroc It's a fucking beautiful film for those of us into period Samurai films.
I'm sure many movies would "S-U-C-K-S-B-A-L-L-S-!-!-!" when you don't actually bother to read the back of the cover before buying it, and - surprise surprise - it's not the movie you thought it might be!
@cinesimonj You're dead right, it was a SHOCKER! I'm a samurai film junkie, but for some reason, this movie did not sit well with me. I had read somewhere that the Last Man Standing was based on a samurai movie. I'm sure how/why I ended up ordering this movie from Amazon. But I was thoroughly disappointed. I hear it's based on a true story. I usually don't like true story type movies. Oh well, you live and learn. I'll be more careful next time...
I enjoyed this film in most respects, but I found the fate of Kan'ichiro to be needlessly maudlin and over-sentimentalized. But the overall story is great and the battle of Toba-Fushimi is especially exciting. Interestingly, Sato Koichi and Sakai Masato both featured in the 2004 Taiga drama "Shinsengumi!" but instead of playing Saito Hajime and Okita Souji as in this film, they portrayed Serizawa Kamo and Yamanami Keisuke. Don'tcha love the musical Shinsengumi?
no1 could doubt the courage of the shinsengumi after watching this. the demise of the shinsengumi really spelled the end of the samurai! while it didnt have the huge budget the last samurai had, this film really captures the essence of bushido
Actually i thought this was far superior to twilight samurai. That movie will be forgotten. While this will stand the test of time. And the main character did not change. maybe you do not understand japanese cinema. They have complexity and substance. Unlike hollywood.
It's an alright movie, but there are lots of things that annoyed me. I hated the main characters sudden change in personality, first he only cared about surviving and helping his family, then he didn't care about money at all and became the honourable samurai, when in the beginning he already lost all honour by leaving his clan! It can be a bit tough sometimes to understand which scene is a flashback and which isn't and the ending was SOO melodramatic and drawn out... Twilight Samurai is better.
That is what made it such a powerful movie. You truly grew to love this character. Its not often that a movie can move me in such a profound way. I cried as well....
If yo haaven´t watched this movie... DO IT!
It´s truly awesome =)

@Onnamusha Aah - over-sentimentalization(that's actually a word!) is one reason why Japanese films work so great!

There are no existence of good and evil in this world.
Just exist what you believe in your mind.
Do your best for what you believe by death.

The only samurai movie that is on par with Seven Samurai, in my opinion, though for different aesthetic reasons - a must-see.

I so agree i like Twilight samurai too
but Mibu gishi den is my favorite.
I understood this film very well
i've lived a life watching Jidaigeki films since age 5 and this film is the most mature to me.
I guess people who see this film and fail to capture the storyline and idea should stick to shit films like Kill Bill and last samurai.
