Agreed. This is already sets the bar very high for prog metal contenders over the next decade. The more I listen to this album the more perfect it gets. Sincerely hope these guys will decide to continue recording under this moniker and release similar material.
Sympathetic Resonance is simply the best Progressive Metal album I've heard during the past 10 years, that is a genre definer. I'm really glad that John Arch is back on track again since he's been my favorite vocalist for a long time. I really hope this project goes on and maybe once again become the actual Fates Warning.
So that's Brian Slagel? I know this is about Arch/Matheos (which is hands-down the best record in its genre in, man, maybe a decade), but I've been seeing Brian's name on great Metal Blade records for 25 years now; how about a shout-out to the man for all he's done for metal? MB's not just a cornerstone of the scene, its frickin FOUNDATION. Thanks for everything, Brian, including making this incredible reunion record possible.
@j800r my point is that half of anyone who cares about Arch/Matheos is an old Fates fan and why not call it that? I'm sure there are contractual reasons and nothing against Alder, No Exit is there most cohesive record.
John, I would like to thank you for taking care of your voice! Thank God, I bet you never put a cigar to mouth! Just goes to show you when your career is on the line, smoking is non-existant!! Definately going out to buy two or three copies for myself and for friends who recognize the magic of prog. rock!!
@jackmarsilva It's not his career. Technically it never was his career. He never made a living from it. He crafts furniture I believe. So if he hasn't smoked (who's to say he hasn't? Russell Allen smokes and still has a monster voice.) or drank much or whatever then it's not been for his career's sake. His career has never been on-the-line.
Like many others, I have been waiting a long, long time to hear John Arch's unbelievable vocals paired up again with the skill of Jim Matheos' compositions. I would have been happy with a mediocre release just to hear Arch's voice again, well this is not mediocre. This is as good as prog metal gets in any era: 80's , 90's, now, then, future! I'm glad these guys friendship made this cd possible. This is sympathetic resonance in action: collaborative writing and ideas inspiring each other.
This album is better than I expected. Just amazing. The drumming is really really good. The drumming sounds similar to Mark Zonder. This is a masterpiece!!!!!
A true masterpiece for progressive metal fans. I can't stop listening to this album. I'm so glad to hear John Arch's voice again! The creativity is through the roof with these guys. Everything sounds very fresh, not like it was masterminded by someone who's been making albums for 30 years like Matheos has. It's obvious his musical well has not run dry, not by a long shot.
It sounds like the album was a very natural process and that they took all the time they needed. I guess this really benefits the record and could make it a true masterpiece, the first parts sound stunning!
@Methrt3 They can't. That would be the same thing as sacking Ray. Ray is the vocalist for Fates now and has been for YEARS. He's sung way more albums for Fates so nowadays pretty much he's the voice of the band. There are some diehards who can't be swayed and believe Fates died after John was fired, but to me Ray breathed new life into the band. I love John Arch era Fates and it def can't be touched, but Ray Alder Fates is also incredible and Ray has a fantastic voice.
I love FW..I loved John arch's solo album also. FW is for me what Zeppelin was for kids in the 70's.
