I grew up in the city where most of this was filmed in (after Vince Vaughen). We watched this in HS (same school, same Scouts jerseys & jackets) while we were reading "The Catcher in the Rye."
The 1980s was a very special time and there will no other time like it. In fact I really believed that people would remain united and not divided. We enjoyed learning, we witnessed the best films , books, and movies during this time. NO one was "afraid" of differences in race. It was a beautiful time and I dislike when people outside of this time act as if they knew what the 1980s were like. Anyone born after 1979 or 1990 has no idea what this time was like for us. It was wonderful as the music
We were really this way as young people in the 1980s. It seems like a world away from today's generation. Kids and parents were really this way, especially in Chicago. Where do you think John Hughes got his material? Chicago suburbs and Chicago High School studentswere very much this way. WE were friendly, quiet, hardly any crime, no stupid racism, everyone emjoyed everyone and it was like a community of friends & familiar. There was no gang banging. All races were united at this time.
I am in serious LIKE with Timothy Hutton. Even before anyone knew him to be special. He is very sexy in a quiet way. I had my first crush on him from this very movie and in Taps. He was hot in Taps to me when it came out in 1981 when I was 13 (of course the sexy Tim is 8 years old than me) so right there we are a part of a special time of film making. His father was a beautiful man whom he missed very much. Excellent & talented family!
@PC3900 Ahhh, but you remember it , which indicates that it was an unfrogettable and intense experience and you miss this type of crafting in films and in people. For you to be here NOW and to write this means that the 1980s had a similar impact on you or unbeknowst to you and you loved it. I know, because I love this decade.. People were so different then and I miss that very, very uch. I feel so lost in this time now. It seems so foreign to me.
MTM deserved the Oscar. Sissy Spacek is wonderful but MTM showed her acting range here. She was only known for comedic acting, but this shocked everyone.
Currently doing a paper on this movie for my psych class. This movie shows a dysfunctional family and the roles each family member plays and how they interact with each other.
Mary Tyler Moore was awesome in this movie. She deserved an Oscar, but she was not a likeable character. Also only one person can win. MTM is a superb actress in her timing believability, authenticity and her ability to exude emotion sometimes without speaking a word.
First of all Timothy Hutton did win an Oscar for his role and think Donald Sutherland was nominated. Also Some roles are meant for certain talent. Gene Hackman another favorite would have been great as Dr Berger but Judd Hirsh just killed. Very good Judd Hirsh. This whole movie is real life sad but true. Thank you for still having it posted. Never tire of this movie and look how young they all were. They have like wine become better with age.
@starlight76able And he did not make many movies after this Crowning Glory. Often that happens after people win. He was great....they all were in this. Awesome movie that delves into human nature and frailties.
@starlight76able Mary Tyler Moore was nominated for the Oscar as well. As she should have been. She gave an inspired dramatic performance. The winner that year was Sissy Spacek for Coal Miner's Daughter. It was a good year for movies (I even liked Xanadu).
Although Timothy Hutton was barely able to capitilize on his Oscar [registered trademark] win ,he was still able perform brilliantly along side future double Oscar [registered trademark] winner Sean Penn, Tom Cruise and Giancarlo Esposito of "Do The Right Thing" fame, in "Taps".
Hutton might be a victim of the "Oscar Curse": Feeling the need to unnecessarily over-exceed your talents after winning.
Just do u is my advice: An Oscar means the best of a calender year, not of all time.
This was just recommended to me today by Victoria Maxwell. In case no one's heard of her she used to be an actress but had to quit due to mental illness, and now she tours the world to share her story and experiences.
@dustbunnieboo I deserve your sympathies, especially because after having watched the full movie I can now say that my m-i-l is sooooo much worse! This woman is a walk in the park by comparison! ;-)
@VVExtra. Sorry to hear your m-i-l is worse...I feel your pain.
My mother-in-law stopped sending my son birthday and Xmas gifts after he was diagnosed with autism at 2 age. That was pretty much a deal-breaker for us.
@dustbunnieboo well that's a well warranted deal breaker. I just can't believe it. How awful for you and your son. But, one day she will look back in regret and realise she's the only one who missed out. Karma is a b*tch like that.
@VVExtra I hope you're right, but my son is now 17, so I'm not holding my breath. She has called my husband occasionally, but has never asked about our son since his autism diagnosis. Oh and btw, she's a "family counselor" by trade (PhD is psychology) and talks non-stop about being a Christian. Ironic huh?
This is just a gut-wrenching film! First saw it about 20 years ago and it stuck with me ever since. Mary Tyler Moore plays one of the greatest fucking movie villains of all time -- should have gotten every award imaginable. As for this film winning Best Picture and Director over "Raging Bull"...Well, I'd rather watch "Raging Bull" than this, but then again, I wouldn't argue with someone awarding this exceptional film either
My childhood stomping grounds. Read the book and saw the film. Timothy Hutton was FANTASTIC and I believe had just lost his father when the film was made. Lake Forest is such a beautiful place. I went up there for a wedding at Lake Forest College. I really enjoyed it! It's genius to juxtapose a family falling apart against such a beautiful setting. It's the physical equivalent of everything looking so deceptively good on the outside that nobody bothers to look deeper.

This is such a great movie. Pachelbel's Canon in D major is now one of my favorite pieces of classical music since I first heard it here. This is one of the few times I've seen Mary Tyler Moore in a role where she wasn't all happy and perky, and she proved she could do it well.
@talkingducksrgreat Actually you can... (if it's good enough to prompt you to want to save it in the first place) the freezer and the microwave are wonderful inventions that make it possible to do so, and maintain pretty close to original quality for up to a week. I never got to test that theory when my boys were living at home, (there was never any left over) : ) but I have added this to my home-made convenience breakfasts, and it's good.
I grew up in the city where most of this was filmed in (after Vince Vaughen). We watched this in HS (same school, same Scouts jerseys & jackets) while we were reading "The Catcher in the Rye."

This is such a great movie. Pachelbel's Canon in D major is now one of my favorite pieces of classical music since I first heard it here. This is one of the few times I've seen Mary Tyler Moore in a role where she wasn't all happy and perky, and she proved she could do it well.

Beautiful movie. I saw this exhausted on a flight home once and I will never forget that first time I watched it.

@talkingducksrgreat This is potentially life-saving information.

@talkingducksrgreat I once tried to save french toast. I ended up in the hospital for 6 weeks.
