I took a 454 to Gaines one time with a rod knock...After inspection, he told me it was not a rod knock, it was carbon knock! I felt like such a fool! But, in his mello, kind spirited way, he made me feel good about being a fool. I would love to have done some of the things he did in the high performance world...He lived a life to be proud of! I was saddened to hear of Gaines' passing. I knew him as my machinist. He and Bob treated me with great respect and caring -- like an old friend. He truly was the epitome of a gentleman.

I was curious about many of the old NW pro-racers and when I searched for Gains Markley I found this. I'm sorry to hear of his passing.
