  • God bless whoever put this on here. I've searched for it for years and here it is. And here I am. A forty-something year old man tearing up at this amazing gift from the past.

  • He actually had a bunch of similar shows from the mid-60s to the mid-90s - Gather 'Round, Cover to Cover, The Book Bird, Storybound, Read It with John Robbins, Books from Cover to Cover, More Books from Cover to Cover, Read On: Cover to Cover, probably some other variations I've never heard of... And of course none of it is available anywhere. Which is too bad - I'd lay down serious cash for episodes in even VHS quality. Thanks EduTvArchive for preserving some of it!

  • I think different PBS stations must've run John Robbins show under different titles. I definitely recall watching Robbins draw along with a story, but am pretty sure the program I watched as a wee sprog was called "Read it" and the opening credits involved cartoon frogs.

Well, whatev, this guy is terrific under any title. I had always found it kinda mesmerizing..

  • I always loved this show! This guy was great!

  • YEAH i watched this when i stayed home from school i had the chicken pox. when this aired. on channel 13 on the east coast.

  • Jhon HAD a MEGA MUSTASH! PURE AWESOME!

  • OH SNAP BOOK BIRD! XD

  • Channel 10/36 in the Milwaukee area for me :) I am so happy I found this! Everyone else kept bringing up Imagination Station & I was like nooooo this isn't it!

  • Memories...I use to watch this whenever I was home sick! Great stuff.

  • Actually I grew up in the 60's and remember watching this as a third grader. He introduced me to books like A WRINKLE IN TIME and THE DARK IS RISING. Those books taught me to love reading, and today I write novels because of them.

  • This man inspired me to draw! I loved this show so much!

  • GOT any more?? God I miss this!

  • I always admired his mustache! SWANK!

  • ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh I remember this man very very well we watched him in school

  • this came on when i was in school our school didnt have t.v but when i miss school i put on pbs and this is soo much fun then going to class..... i member sometimes he tell scary stories where made me had nightmares.....is this dude still alive?

  • Also enjoyed "Gather Round" same type of show, lots more drawing while the story was told

  • I used to stay home "sick" and watch all these PBS shows on channel 25 in Cleveland.

  • @Diabolik771 I would stay home "sick" to watch PBS shows too! Channel 21 WHA in Wisconsin here!

  • @Diabolik771 So I was not the only one who did this? :)

  • This was one of my favorite shows....John Robbins was the man!!

  • Does anyone know the name of one of these AIT PBS programs that had a women read children's stories to the viewer? I remember most of the shows where they read the story to the viewer featured a man (usually this John Robbins guy) but this reader was female. The only other details I can remember is she read the book Anansi the Spider and the shows theme song was synthesized and almost sounded like a harpsichord.

  • Takes me way back!!

  • ...and, who remebers "Project Survival" (aliens that needed to use the library), "Math Factory" (puppets that built math in a factory), and "The Metric System" (sort of like The Electric Company, but with a Metric theme & the Meter Man uppet/ human hybrid)?

  • THANK YOU! Now if only I could find more of these old, educational PBS shows, then That would make my day! I remember the science program, with a very distinguished man (who reminded me of Greg Morris) in a lab coat, who would show how a wing worked in a smoke chamber. Too cool!

  • @hagler1909 was it Mr Wizards world?

  • creap,

No, he was not Mr. Wizard (Don Herbert). The "distinguished man (who reminded me of Greg Morris) in a lab coat" was a black man. I would see him during the mid-to-late Nineteen-seventies, on my local PBS station (WYES, channel 12). So much of the good programs have been replaced with mindless, "babysitting" drivel. I actually learned something, without having my brain bombarded with flashy graphics. LOL!

  • This brings back memories,I loved Balto the Wonder Dog!

  • please, please, please post more of this show as well as "readit'' (also with john robbins)!

  • wasnt this show under like five different names?

  • John Robbins is awesome; as is his mustache!!

  • Wow, This Brings Back Memories, I Remember watching Old PBS Shows Like This One, Living On The Farm In Canton, South Dakota. This takes me back to my childhood.

  • Oh my god, I can't believe I found this! Anybody that grew up in the 80's, this is our childhood :)

  • @NWarty I REMEMBER THIS SHOW! I LOVED IT SOOO MUCH!!! IT BRINGS BACK SOOO MANY GOOD MEMORIES! :-D

  • @NWarty for those who didnt have cable this was like going to the movies

  • @NWarty Yep. Loved this growing up.

  • I Wish i could sketch as good as he is.

  • It was great to see this! I remember John Robbins presenting 'The Mouse and the Motorcycle' and a few other books when I was a child. I'd love to see more of these.

  • @gerasco

One of the episodes I loved as a kid

  • I love this so much and I am so grateful to you for posting this here. If anyone could make the rest available, it would be wonderful.

  • oh gosh! I so remember seeing this when I was young. There was another show, a man showing step by step how to draw different things, but for the life of me I can't remember the name and it was on PBS. They made us watch it in school and draw along.

  • @halfpintprincess76 Was it named Cover to Cover?

    WP

  • @JimAsian1 I still can't remember the name of it. I just remember my class and another class being made to watch it together and draw along. I have a special needs child and I bet she would love to see these shows. They just don't do shows like these anymore.

  • Thank you SOOOO much for posting this. As a child, I was enthralled by all three of John Robbins wonderful shows: Book Bird, Readit and Cover to cover. He really inspired me and I grew up to become an award winning artist. Thanks, John! I have been looking and looking for this on YouTube. It's so wonderful to see it again. My clearest memory is of a program he did on that haunting book, 'Bridge to Terabithia.' I'd give a lot to see that again. Please, post more and thank you!!!!

  • @tulipthehobbit I recall he had another program called "Story Bound," in which he talked about, and read excerpts from, "Bridge to Terrabithia."

Man! I'm suddenly taken back to early 1982, 5th Grade!
