hank marvin even beats the gutarists of today hands down............he is a legend.......................there shall always be only one "hank marvin"........nobody can replace him ever!!!!!!
The best group on earth, we should stimulated our kids to play this kind of music again.Starting some groups at school and let them take lessons for guitar, this may never die.
I have got the original 45 single of this and the composers are on there too, but not alot of people know that! They might get to know more if info is available to be picked up by internet search engines. Big Figure Band (on youtube ) with their version of The Stranger do mention it their info. Quite a good perfomance it is too!.
Composers are often left off the credits. The Stranger was written by Morgan "Thunderclap" Jones and Bill Crompton. Perhaps you could put them on your tags and mention this in your introduction.
One of the things I feel often gets missed when you talk about the shadows and all the focus falls on Hank and he's the best at this style; but it always seems that Bruce Welch's fantastic rythm playing is overlooked. Watch him work, he is often putting in little single note fills. But his rythm playing !! I don't know of anyone better or as good. Except perhaps Tommy Emanuelle with his brother Phil when they do shadows tunes.Watch Bruce's work in "The Savage" for instance. Wonderful!
THE SHADS part of my youth, they made so many kids pick up a guitar...they make it look SOO easy but it aint!!!! they have this unique sound that no one -else can get 100%...hank marvin legend!!!!!
Hank B. should be signed up as a walking, talking advert for all the amazing sweet guitar sounds that can be extracted from that great instrument, The Strat. Rock music wouldn't be the same without Leo Fender's supremo invention ; and Stratocasters wouldn't be as famous as they are, without the great Hank B. playing them to great acclaim .. for several decades now ...
I've known of The Shadows and Cliff Richard Since 1959, And, I reside in NYC.
When they performed "Apache" I was hooked to them forever. And, Inspired me to get a 1963 Hagstrom 1, My first electric Guitar, couldn't afford a Strat, But, It was a Great Guitar, I sold it a few yrs ago for about $500. Shadows are The Best, They beat the Ventures.
I love the fact that Hank and Bruce have those smiles plastered on their faces, like they're having the time of their lives. Somewhere along the way popular music lost its sense of fun and it became standard practise to look sullen and miserable on stage - it comes to something when it takes The Shads, now in their 60s, to keep the truly youthful, uplifting sense of rock n roll alive. They're a class apart.
Always loved always will , since i was young i started loving this sweet guitar melodies, it gives a confort sensation...just love it, thank you Shadows
I know who is playing here,no dispute, never was.I know the original instrumentals( in my head),so well, I can pick up the smallest differences.I was expressing a preference for the original line-up.I take your point about small differences,it is live etc.

Coverman73, You are obviously NOT a purist otherwise you would have complained about the general poor playing and crappy guitar sound by Hank. No Meazzi echo = no cigar Hank. By 1989 10,000 guitarist could play this stuff and better as well. This is just dreary old music.
Your right,I'm not that much of a purist(a word I regret using so casually)to slag off the Shadows like you did.I have too much respect for what they did in the past, which by 1989,10,000 imitators could COPY,but fewer become great originators.I see this "dreary old music" hasn't stopped you from adding this clip to your favourites list!!.Wipe it off quickly before every one sees!
What the hell? I replied to some guy who said the shadows were boring. I'm actually 18 and I LOVE the shadows. So get your facts right before you start doubting people okay?
immaculate as ever - after all that's been and gone you have to go back and admit they did something special. Have you seen the Showdaz-a group of french guys from Dijon doing a note perfect copy and showing how people everywhere loved this stuff

An unusual sound, an extraordinary guitar band acrossed 2 centuries and no one can ever come close. Hank is the best guitarist I can remember till today since almost 50 years ago. Let this spirit live forever. The true artists.
I started playing guitar because of Apache (the 1975 release) and returned to the guitar after a long absence because I attended the final tour (edinburgh) in 2004.
The bridge that Hank does on Kon tiki where he plays hamony notes is superb I think he hits a wrong note there in the original recording

Hank and Bruce play true to their original form, but Tony and Jet are conspicuous by their absence for me.Sorry,I'm a purist about Shadows music.
coverman73 3 years ago 2
sorry but i cant agree
1th its NOT Jet Harris ,its mark Griffith on Bass
2th its a quality Piece
even purist, imho their allways should be small differences in their music
otherwise it would getting a bit boring ;)

"KONTIKI" written I think, by the great, long gone, Michael Carr who i believe also wrote "Man of Mystery"!
"The Sranger" on the flip, was something else! 'Cut my teeth on the Shads - taught me how to play! ( along with Don n Phil )
'tried to match the lead/chords/echoes etc! my god, i'm 60 now and i still get goosebumps - eternal mems
Must dust down the ol' Strat!
thanks for posting this - brill
