People talking about English imposing their culture and language on "Gaelic" "Scot"land!! - Both Gaelic language and the Scots were from Ireland originally, who invaded and assimilated the indigenous Picts who actually would have spoken something closer to Welsh. Please Britain was out there on its own was it? Russia/Usa did nothing?

If Irish nationalists stopped blaming England for one second they'd see how many other powers would have taken far more than sovereignty...

@BJWoodcock The decision was taken by Eamonn De Valera (Taoiseach at the time) because Ireland only had economic sovereignty for 20 odd years - the country was a mess. There were no jobs/resources/ money - everybody was dirt poor. Ireland couldn't afford to go to war alongside Britain and on top of that, they would need to deal with the IRA running amock and causing trouble which would have escalated if Ireland and decided not to declare neutrality. Unfortunate but there you are.

Also, to say Scotland was 'colonised' by England is not true; the 2 countries were joined as the United Kingdom in 1707 after both parliaments voted for union.
