Because Brian Lewis teaches people how to experience many different interpretive ideas. Many of the players on that stage may *never* play the Barber concerto that way ever again...but the experience of trying things a way you wouldn't normally approach something is a huge benefit for any aspiring artist. If you can't grasp that concept, then it's obvious you have a lot more learning to do.
Well learning a concerto as a group is (I'm pretty sure) an exercise. When you go performing it by yourself you'll already know the piece and can play it with your own interpretation. I'm pretty sure learning it as a group is to get down all the technical stuff.
Learning a concerto as a group is a horrible idea if you're planning on giving a formal performance of a concerto as a group...but if you're doing it at a music camp as an exercise (like they are here) then it could be beneficial.
i used to attend this camp, and in my opinion, this is a terrible idea to do. barber is one of the most liberal concertoes written for violin. it should not be played as a group, as you will be completely unable to play it how you want it. all those ppl just pumping out notes in the exact same way completely ruins the piece, along with the few ppl that dont hit the notes.
well without some sort of little clone group all playing the same subtleties, it ruins the idea of a solo. these kids are pretty good, but, they can't all play the same, one violin would still make this better. don't get me wrong, it's a nice idea, but this was still a mistake.
I am one of those people up on stage and we certainly didn't think it was a mistake. On the contrary, I thought it was an excellent way to be introduced to the Barber concerto. I'm afraid you don't really have a grasp on why Mr. Lewis had us play it as a group...

Well, all of us who were in this class thoroughly enjoyed playing it and we used Brian Lewis' interpretation, not "all those ppl's."

By the way, I found it interesting to hear this piece played by an entire section of strings. Wonderful perspective. :)
