have you noticed this song sort of favors judas priest? well, it was written by bob halligan jr, the same guy who wrote "you got another thing commin'"!
Love that song. When that guitar kicks in, I see one of two things: The underside of a big-block musclecar as it peels away from us, or a fighter jet ripping low through a valley.
With this album and with Revolution By Night, I thought BOC's quality control mechanism had gotten a little inconsistent. "Let Go" on Revolution was just dire. On this album it just seemed bizarre to record a song called "Rock Not War" and then have a song called "Beat 'em Up".
Someone mentioned how there could be a comparison to Judas Priest...hmmm, interesting thought, maybe not so far off the mark. As long as it wasn't demeaning:)
mediocre boc is comparable to many today's crap!buck's solo is precise and explosive...in fact this was the track that got me into boc...perfect water is this album's best track by far!
Hey Azmarkus agreed on this but good Priest is a bad comparison, perhaps some Priest but this is more like a 2nd tier LA hair band, Quiet Riot etc...this is absolute shit anyway. About as far away from pure BOC as you get, end of story.
kings of speed metal? as i recall, blue oyster cult weren't all that fast. and they weren't all that hard, either. they were almost a power pop band, defined by buck dharma's melodic-yet-tuff, keening guitar sound. a sound that was more "byrdsy" than metallic. (i'll have to admit, they were great live. i saw them perform, regrettably only once, and the show was one of the best concerts i have ever seen.)
Definitely not power pop, though. I think they only started getting Byrdsian after "The Reaper," maybe with the exception of "Last Days of May." They were definitely fast, though, and imho the only more metallic band in the '70s was Sabbath.
@jonbecker03 They were refered to as the East coast Doors! They're not speedy either, I wonder where the connection comes from...heavy metal? Sandy Perlman coined the phrase, and he was writing a LOT of BOC lyrics. But I wouldn't even put them too far into the HM catagory, let alone speed metal? LOL that'd be like calling Genesis' The Return of the Giant Hogweed as "heavy metal"(good heavy song for them tho).
You know that youtube is reaching the far ends of the earth when 'Beat 'em Up' makes it on here. Absolutely the worst BOC track of all time; at least 'Let Go' had band members involved in the composition. The words are so un-BOC you have to wonder what the record company was thinking as they were trying to pump some life into BOC. It pains me to hear a band with so much originality trying to imitate JPriest and adding a bunch of cheap snyth whooshes and beeps. Grim. Beyond bad. Hideous.
Yea, I tend to agree too. I have the UK mix on LP of this album, but it still does not sound that great. Two/three good song does not make constitute greatness. Sad as other albums elevate beyond greatness.
This is the first time i've heard these "Club Ninja" songs in probably 20 years. They are the only songs in BOC's catalogue that don't stand the test of time; even "Imaginos" and "Rev. by Night" is listenable now in 2009. Some of "Club Ninja" could be salvaged by taking out the mid-80's pop sparkle and going with a more minimal remix. But not this un-BOC-like song.
@azmarkus We know what the record company was thinking..."Eric you are the best songwriter in this band, my friend...you write your songs and as long as we can play it on the radio, you'll go far." it's what I'd like to call the "southpark Skyler syndrome".
If you've seen the Reach for the Skylar episode, you'll understand. Fortunately Eric did NOT leave band, and subsequent albums got better and better.
This reminds me of Quiet Riot so much. Especially when he does that scream.

Yeah! BOC...the most macho rock and roll band that I know of, and "Beat Em Up" just goes to show their power :) Love it, love it!

I like this song. Sure, they're not telling a great story about Imaginos or heros, but it still brings a smile to my face.

what can i say? i like beat 'em up, but
club ninja was kind of a low point for
a phenom band and the kings of

Thats interestings as it was one of the first BOC songs I ever heard.
To me at that time I thought this was the stuff that defined them.

@vidstarr I hope it still is a part of your standard BOC listening:)

One of my friends told me that BOC intended for this song to be in an 80s movie for one of those montage scenes. I could totally see that, haha

@nameless888 Yeah, sort of like a half a minute in Back to the Future or something.

@azmarkus The record company only thinks of money, not music, or bands or anyone that cares about the band.
