Anyone who thinks US imperialism is a force for good should look at Haiti and Honduras. I'm no fan of Castro or Chavez, but better them than thugs like Lobo or another Papa Doc.
Latin America is the back yard to know one. It is "Our Yard". The spirit of Che guevara, Jose Marti, Simon Bolivar, and Eugenio maria de Hostos must live. The governments of Latin America must stop being corrupt, despotic, and puppets. It must foster education so that Latin Americans can be a productive part of the human race. We should deal with the United states but must always watch them as you would watch a hawk. Their not to be trusted.
The Monroe Doctrine was created by the United States for the United States and gives the United States the legal right to intervene in any Latin American / Western Hemispheric country as it sees fit. Examples being the Guatemalan coup in 1954, the Chilean coup in 1973, the invasion of Cuba during the Cold War, the Iran-Contra affair and trying to overthrow the Nicaraguan government.
The U.S. is not God and does not and will never have the right to impose itself on any Latin American country.
Come on..by saying "Viva Hugo Chavez" you sound as if you would consider him a sound leader.
Have you spoken to any Venezuelans in Venezuela about this? I have...
Not a single person I spoke with had anything good to say. I remember Venezuela 3 years ago and it has only sloped even further into corruption. Everyone will tell you.
I only hope we can start living in the real America, the one that our ancestors came after.
To misinform about Latin Americans feelings about our great nation of indians, black and white people living toghether with equal rights won´t help that great nation you think you are.
I think Obamas going to be more of the Bush administrations redevised plan: the 'bad left' countries being isolated and secessionist movements being fermented in the resource rich regions, and the 'good left' countries receiving trade deals to encourage them back into the US sphere of influence and not go totally independent
The USA should nationalize all the countries between the Texas border and the Panama Canal (Mexico, Belize, Guatamala, Honduras, El Salvador, Nicaragua). That way, 'illegal aliens' would become American citizens - and employers would have to pay them the minimum wage. And we could move into Central America and fix it up as the 51st state.
Yeah sure, and while we're at it, lets just go ahead and nationalize all the other countries in the world, that way we wont need to start any more wars for resources because it will belong to the government anyways.
Obama supported Mexico's version of Plan Colombia (the "Merida initiative") which has further militarized the hemisphere by expanding the failed drug war into that country. Murder, kidnappings, corruption and gang wars are now part of ordinary life in Mexico. I am skeptical about this Obama. The ruling class would not have chosen him if they didn't think he was good for empire.
I agree...if you have a moment, check the opensecrets site search Obama donors>check the corporate donors (the candidate comparison graphs). Interesting that Goldman Sachs always donates to Democrats...but all the corps put (more of) their money on Obama--their rational is up for speculation...
Obama or not, the foreign and domestic policy is dictated by a group of people behind scenes, it is not up to Obama to decide anything, stop believing that lie.
Americans MUST take their country back and get rid of the same system of politics that hasn't worked at all but for a few families, the rest of the world is a mess.
We The People ARE taking this country back, we don't want socialistic, expansionist, imperialist, interventionist ideas here.
To understand what the US have been doing in Latin America one must see acclaimed film maker John Pilger's amazing documentary; "War on democracy". Google it.
An important book to understand the US immoral, corrupt economic policies in Latin America is John Perkin's "Confessions of an economic hit man".
J.Perkins is doing a great job exposing the whole thing. He is all over YouTube. It would be great to see an interview with him here, but I guess the subject is too provocative for RNN.
For decades the US has led imperialistic policies towards the world. But the law of action/reaction is inevitable and, like all other empires, the US empire will fall as well. It is happening right now.
Hopefully Obama will try to lead a better, less invasive/exploitative policy in L. America.
The US admin. has hidden powers pulling the strings, doesn't seem it will be different now.
From his positions during the campaign, he will be more or less the same as Bush, I'd be glad to be wrong.
Although Evo Morales and Hugo Chavez like to think of themselves as (using Mccain's terms) mavericks, anti-Americans and so on. They still trade a lot with the US AND need US' dollars.
US is the largest supporter of Bolivia, it is the country that sends the most amount of money to help Bolivians. Although there are other nations that also do so, the US sends at least 50% of the total money they get. If the US stops doing that Bolivians will suffer a lot.
Johnw, well, Brazil isn't trading much with US. I think it is now less than 20% of Brazil's total exports.
Democrats have a different tone, but it is well known that they are more protectionist, therefore the trade will not become much better.
Despite of the high tariffs of US (which made Brazilians trade with other nations), Brazil is the second largest exporter of sugar to the United States after the Dominican Republic.
How can LA be spiralling out of America's control when it is America? The United States is out of America's control. What goods and services are we producing are so valued throughout the world that we are so influencial? Weapons of mass destruction? Shit talking "leaders"?
That's because we were asleep at the wheel and let globalist corporations take over. To bad Ron Paul or Chuck Baldwin didn't win instead of mcbama. Now we have to put up with more NEW WORLD ORDER / NORTH AMERICAN UNION BS
We need a citizens movement in the United States to renounce the American Empire. I hope Chavez will offer some more free heating oil to the poor people in the Northeastern United States this winter. A lot of people need it, and it can be a big grandstanding gesture that the left can use to pressure Obama into having very high profile reconciliation talks with the left-wing governments of Latin and South America.
Yes. I know that after the hilarious speech where Chavez pointed out the fact that Bush was the devil, Democratic Governor Baldacci of Maine refused the offer. He would probably have a hard time getting away with refusing now. Chavez is going to offer him the olive branch, and the American people--the ones who overwhelmingly elected him, are going to want to take the olive branch. Especially if it comes with heating oil. Most Americans would rather do business with Chavez than Saudi Arabia.
obama is a member of the council of foreign relations and bushs cousin lol ^^ don't expect any change from him except a pushing for nwo agenda. remember that bush called for "change" and small goverment in the 2000 election? lol
Citizens who are dismayed by the United States' descent into Empire must maintain the united front that Obama's election represents. We have to keep pushing back and demanding a return to a Democratic Republican Government. Restore the balance of power in government! Make the criminals all stand trial for treason! Abolish corporate personhood and take apart the Fed!
yea ^^ the founding father would rotate in their graves of they would know whats happening to their creation today. "give me liberty of give me death" but today its more like "give me my remote and ill shut up" lol
There is no evidence to suggest he is any different from Bush. If he had not voted against Iraq he would not have gotten elected. And now we have "the decider" version 2.0. If he can decide who gets invaded by himself, he can go invade by himself as well. He voted for the bailout bill, enough said right there. Abraham Lincoln was a good speechgiver, because they were two minutes long.
You are right, but Bush didn't get swept into power by a wave of anti-rightwing sentiment. People have to commit to this for the long haul. There are a lot more politically aware and motivated young people today than there were two years ago, or five years ago. We have to keep the pressure on Obama and make him do the right things.
If he responded to pressure from the public he would not have voted for the bailout.
The country is bankrupt and he is handing out money. People don't have to commit to anything. Most people in this country have nothing left to lose, other than debt. Proping up failed industries with their money isn't a good start.
obama is screwing the usa on border control castro and chavez want tosee us citizens dead.

Good comment, ldbia.
It is good that Brazil has more diversified trading now than in the past.
Not a good thing to have strong trade relations with an imperialistic nation, heavily armed, that is falling in a deep economical black hole.
