The Monroe Doctrine was created by the United States for the United States and gives the United States the legal right to intervene in any Latin American / Western Hemispheric country as it sees fit. Examples being the Guatemalan coup in 1954, the Chilean coup in 1973, the invasion of Cuba during the Cold War, the Iran-Contra affair and trying to overthrow the Nicaraguan government.

The U.S. is not God and does not and will never have the right to impose itself on any Latin American country.

Obama supported Mexico's version of Plan Colombia (the "Merida initiative") which has further militarized the hemisphere by expanding the failed drug war into that country. Murder, kidnappings, corruption and gang wars are now part of ordinary life in Mexico. I am skeptical about this Obama. An important book to understand the US immoral, corrupt economic policies in Latin America is John Perkin's "Confessions of an economic hit man".

US is the largest supporter of Bolivia, it is the country that sends the most amount of money to help Bolivians. Although there are other nations that also do so, the US sends at least 50% of the total money they get. If the US stops doing that Bolivians will suffer a lot.

Johnw, well, Brazil isn't trading much with US. I think it is now less than 20% of Brazil's total exports.

Democrats have a different tone, but it is well known that they are more protectionist, therefore the trade will not become much better.

Despite of the high tariffs of US (which made Brazilians trade with other nations), Brazil is the second largest exporter of sugar to the United States after the Dominican Republic.

Yes. I know that after the hilarious speech where Chavez pointed out the fact that Bush was the devil, Democratic Governor Baldacci of Maine refused the offer. He would probably have a hard time getting away with refusing now. Chavez is going to offer him the olive branch, and the American people--the ones who overwhelmingly elected him, are going to want to take the olive branch. Especially if it comes with heating oil. Most Americans would rather do business with Chavez than Saudi Arabia.

You are right, but Bush didn't get swept into power by a wave of anti-rightwing sentiment. People have to commit to this for the long haul. There are a lot more politically aware and motivated young people today than there were two years ago, or five years ago. We have to keep the pressure on Obama and make him do the right things.
