  • Agree with first comment about that year, I was 16 but, ahh, what a year. Saw Spencer ( the Guitarist ) at a gig and was inspired to learn the guitar ( he was and is a great player ). Now today, just joined a band with his old Bass player, the world does turn, I am delighted, this song is wonderful. love to all . Leigh.

  • AHHH the summer of 1976, got my driver's lisc. new boyfriend, the best summer of my life

  • 5 people are, wait, only 5 people hate good music?

  • Thank you for putting this up. Interesting to see. The Searchers has it on their program when they are playing all night without any support act. Not if they are going on shows like Solid Silver 60's. And they do not start of with this song as someone wrote earlier. They sing this song or should I say a part of it when they present Spencer James. And I must admit that The Searchers does it much better than this. Spencer does not sing all the songs in the Searchers, but he does sing faboulous..

  • Such a cool song, the '70's was a time when manliness wasn't defined by your tattoos but by your heart. Long live the '70's.

  • Although this tune reached #4 in 1974, this tune I could imagine being released in The 60's. Sounds '60's.

  • The lead singer kind of looks like the hitman from the movie "No Country for Old Men".

  • the osmonds are fab I love 70s music

  • One question...where's Tony Burrows?

  • @wimboes50 Good question ! The renowned 'session musician' of the early/mid-1970's is conspicuous by his absence in that footage of First Class performing the song "Beach Baby".

  • the 70's, the best there ever was!

  • @thebearclawjones Jonesy: To be honest, I can't work out whether you are just an ignorant b*****d ...... or one of those annoying internet 'trolls'.

Either way, I am not going to bother responding to any more of your silly and provocative comments on this You Tube board (or on any other online forum, for that matter).

Have a nice day ...... sir.

  • @TheEctomorph good. i dont know really know what youve been jabbering about anyways. apart from the 4 people they all of mature years and i never saw a picture of marc bolan where he didn't look at least 35 so he was either lying or as stoned out of his brains as yourself.

  • @thebearclawjones [Continuing on from my previous 'post' about pop stars of the 1970's] absolutely ludicrous. In fact, two members of The B.C.R.'s were still teenagers when "Bye Bye Baby" and "Give A Little Love" - their two biggest hits in the UK - topped the charts in 1975. I am referring, by the way, to Les McKeown and Stuart ["Woody"] Wood.

Your knowledge of 1970's pop music clearly leaves a great deal to be desired, sir.

  • @thebearclawjones [Continuing on from my previous 'post' about pop stars of the 1970's]: Moreover, the late great Marc Bolan of T. Rex (God rest his soul) had eight Top Ten hit singles in the UK - including four number ones - before he turned twenty-five years of age (in September 1972).

And let us not forget The Bay City Rollers, who for two years - 1974 and '75 - were the teen sensations of Britain. To suggest that they were "middle-aged" at the time of their chart success would be

  • DEFINITELY ONE OF MY FAVOURITE SONGS FROM THE BRILLIANT SUMMER OF 1974. I TOTALLY AGREE WITH TREVOR 40 THAT ITS MUCH BETTER SONG THAN ANYTHING FROM TODAYS MUSIC.

  • the 70's. when it was just normal for pop stars to be, like, 40 years old....

  • @thebearclawjones Don't be silly. Donny Osmond was one of the biggest pop stars of the 1970's ...... and he had three number one hit singles before he reached his sixteenth birthday: "Puppy Love" (in July of 1972); "The Twelfth Of Never"( in March '73), and "Young Love" (in August '73).

What is more, Mr Osmond's younger bruv, Jimmy (who was born in 1963) had a number one hit in the UK with "Long Haired Lover From Liverpool" in December '72. He was all of NINE (!) years of age at the time.

  • @TheEctomorph oh blah, blah, blah the osmonds - you must be a fan. fact is they were the odd ones out everyone else was 50. plus they're weird.

  • @thebearclawjones So ...... The Osmonds are "weird", are they? In stark contrast to your good self, of course, who is remarkably normal - in every way.

With regard to your claim that most pop stars of the 1970's were middle-aged at the time of their chart success, that claim just does not stand up to analysis. David Cassidy - a huge 'weenybopper' idol in the early part of that decade, on both sides of the Atlantic - was all of 22 when his hit "How Can I Be Sure?" topped the UK charts.

  • Love this song every time i hear it always reminds me of when i was a young kid.

  • so cool it's untrue.

  • Dang...I wondered what happen to them after this hit song in the1970's?...if they kept on going they would have rival the beach boys.

  • Love it!

  • One of the best songs of all time!

  • The First Class was the studio creation of the British singer-songwriter John Carter and singer Tony Burrows. Burrows sold eight million records under four different group names: Edison Lighthouse ("Love Grows (Where My Rosemary Goes)"), White Plains ("My Baby Loves Lovin'"), the Brotherhood of Man ("United We Stand") and The Pipkins ("Gimme Dat Ding"). During one memorable episode of the BBC TV show Top of the Pops, Burrows appeared with three of those groups. Info courtesy of Wiki.

  • Colt .45, works EVERY time.

  • Song sticks in you head big time!

  • For months in 1974, I heard this on the school bus, in Northern CA. Age 14. Great tune.

  • Great Video!

  • This song played on the radio the entire summer of '74, along with a lot of other great AM hits. What a great summer it was, and to be 14.

  • Del John, lead singer, is HOT! Wow! Where was I? I was only 8.

  • This is a historical song,thnx..!

  • Comment removed

  • this is great.

  • His hairdo looks like Havier Bardem's in "No Country For Old Men"

  • i disagree.First Class had a fantastic beach sound as did and do the Beach Boys.I love the sound of both bands but they are truly both unique in their own way and sound. Its ashame First Class did not hire writers like the Eagles did.I think they had alot of potential, and definetly a great sound!

  • HOLY!!!!! All of my friends ordered this record. So each of us ended up with more that one copy!!!! I was in Junior high!!

  • This is better than any song of 2011!!

  • @trevor40 Concur Trevor40, today most young ones listen to condescending/disgusting rap chatter that glorifies gang violence, sexual perversion, racism, sexism, and dressing down. Dressing down is letting everyone see their underwear thinking they are impressing other; but facts don't lie; most minorities speak condescending language and have STD's. 30-40% of white youths mimic black and latino animal thug behavior. No wonder why so many are imbeciles.

  • Comment removed

  • @trevor40 I agree! Back then, you can understand the songs and you actually could remember them...I miss songs like this...

  • miming to Tony Burrows voice

  • The bass player looks like the wacky brother from the movie The Hangover.

  • the only thing this video is missing is tony burrows!! the real lead singer!..lol..

  • Like the song, but some ppl just shouldn't be allowed to wear tight white pants :P

  • the bass player has a cool shirt

  • Love it!! Very 70's!!!

  • a great soundindg track I love it a lot ((*_*))

  • Del is so totally Hot, Geez where was I when this song was out? I would have totally had a crush on the lead singer!

  • thanks so much for posting!

  • @zestybod Thanks for sharing this knowledge. You obviously know the business. I've always loved this song and wondered who the performers were even though it's obviously a studio creation with huge string and horn sections. So what if it's derivative, it's got a wonderful orchestration, high production values and most importantly a happy and catchy feel that people still remember fondly today. If only songs today had this much content to them!

  • i love listening to this...thanks to my spirit..he died but he is still around..he loves this.....and so do i....

  • I was having a great time when this song was released !!!!

  • It must be me but this sounds nothing like the Beach Boys, they have their own very distinctive sound!!!

  • I have to admit, every freakin time I hear this song, its in my head for the rest of the day. grrrrrrm.

  • @theseether Had to see who made this contirved song which has annoyed me for so many years. Some commentors here claim this sounds like..... the Beach Boys ? C'mon the Beach Boys were the real McCoys.

  • @ndogg20 Contrived or derivative perhaps. Catchy as hell, no doubt.

  • Are the singer(zztop t-shirt) & the guy to the right (Colt 45-yah !) shirt related ? They look like they could be . I just love this group !!!! One of all time favorite summer songs.

  • so innocent

  • Tony was also The Edison Lighthouse - Love Grows Where My Rosemary Goes and The White Plains - Baby Loves Loving and The Foundations - Build Me Up Buttercup and Baby Now That I've Found You) and.The Flying Machine-Smile a Little Smile for me Rosemary. Tony's beautiful voice brought all of those crafty little pop songs from the pen of and produced by Tony Macually to life. Right Pennie? You are so right dream boy now lets go to bed and listen to more songs while you love your baby girl to sleep.

  • I seem to recall that the drummer from First class was working as DJ on the pub curcuit a few years after this was a hit. I certainly remember a guy working in a small club attached to the Target pub in Northolt west London telling us that he had played on the track when we asked him why he played the record every week.. I think his name is Eddie richards ?

  • I wished they could have continued on after the Beach Boys done their time..they would have done great but what happen to them?

  • Superb stuff. One of my all-time favourites.

  • is that michael mcdonald from the dobbie brothers on the drums?

  • 5 dislikes for this song, really?......i don't agree with their musical taste, this is a great song!!!!

  • In fact i just saw Tony Burrows this past saturday and he sang all those songs that @ji61m mentions plus the flowerpot men, the ivy league and original Brotherhood of man... hes doin another show in jan in the camberley area, go see him you won't be disappointed..

  • Paul great video. A fun feel good song

  • Tony Burrows sounds great here! He was also the original lead vocalist for Edison Lighthouse " Love Grows ( Where My Rosemary Goes ), and White Plains " My Baby Loves Lovin " , to name a few....Very cool!

  • @ji61m

I not that sure that Tony is actually appearing in this clip ?

    He did sing though.

  • @derbbus Tony is listed as the lead singer during the recording of this song and another session singer is mentioned and that was Chas Mills. I'm assuming that Chas was a backup singer since Tony has always been the lead singer in all of his projects. Thanks for getting back to me on this.

    Peace....Jim

  • The Colt .45 t-shirt is way cool. Also hats off to the guitarist for having a mullett 15 years before it was fashionable.

  • @cabmandu That's not a mullet, it's a combed back shag. LOL

  • great song, great times, long hair, beach boys vibes, power cuts+ strikes happy days!

  • Patti- to make you feel better!!

  • a fun song!

  • I love this good / fun song :-)

  • Just one of the perfect summer songs from 1974 - amazing! Thanks for the memories!

  • Disco was the name of a studio in germany.

  • It's a little bizarre to see all the disco signs surrounding this band during the performance of their classic song.

  • @notwaiting "Disco" was a German tv show that ran from 1971 to 1982. As you can see, it started long before disco became also a music style.

  • ahhhh , when music was cool ! I was 9 too! born in 1965

this and ~ Sweet~ Fox on the Run , McCartney and Wingz etc...

awesome to watch for free on YouTube !

  • Colt 45 !? Yah baby. and summer. Those were THE days !

  • and these hairstyles are coming back! lol

As far as the clothes.....Is it my imagination or was the 70s about tight clothes and the 80s about loose clothes(parachute pants, etc.)

  • @gdwme been there, wore that. but never owned a leasure suit

  • LOVE this song. Makes me happy too! 1974 was the BEST year for music. (I was 9)

  • It is Tony Burrows voice on the original relased recording and what you are hearing now / this is sync

  • I heard these guys and a lot of other second-raters in Sunset Strip clubs. Sorry, after Zappa and The Turtles these guys and the Standells and bunch of others I can't remember were just... plastic.

  • Who's the lead singer in the video? It isn't Tony Barrows.

  • @quikdraw4 From Wikipedia: "Carter and Shakespeare wrote the song "Beach Baby" in the summer of 1974 in their home in East Sheen, South West London, far from California or, for that matter, any beach. Carter immediately enlisted the help of lead singer Tony Burrows and another session singer, Chas Mills, to record the song for Jonathan King's UK Records record label under the name The First Class."

  • @quikdraw4 It looks almost like Don Grady from My Three Sons who was also the lead singer for The Yellow Baloon

  • I loved this song, thanks for posting it.

  • Great song

  • i found out that it's been done again by a singer called Lewis Winyard - I googled for it and found him and heard it on his Facebook page :-) it's brilliant and massive and it seems it's being released in the summer. bring on the sun! :-) I so love this song

  • OMG!!!! How Bubble Gum are these Guys ??!! As a 60+ boomer this was a bit of a joke for me, hearing it on Armed Forces Radio in 74 in SEA. But for God's sake .... This is embarassing.

  • @gto66solstice08 This is the greatest song never recorded by the Beach Boys . The song vocal arrangements & production are superb and it`s shame that in the autumn of your years you seem to have lost your love and appreciation of of great music .

  • So similar to the Beach boys sound with a little more rock . The singer has got the Brian thing going on and the guy on the right looks like Carl. Excellent sound in a different way!

  • @lakeladymel reminds me more of a curt boettcher track than a beach boys track!

  • this song and radar love...golden earing..remind me so much of being a kid its not funny...love it always

  • For some reason I really love this song!!!!

  • How much fun was the music we grow up with?

  • @Gyphia because we all jus had little 45 rpm record players or old am radios tsk tsk

  • Haha.. I joined the band when Keith the drummer reformed them around 1990,, the song has so much going on in it you wouldnt believe, with all the strings, harmonies and brass going off everywhere.. they were going to re-release it then but i dont think they did.. my claim to fame haha :)

  • @limerickandy Keith was never actually in The First Class, although he was in a band with Spencer James from First Class at one time called "Bobby Dazzler". The single was recorded using session musicians (Brian Bennett from The Shadows is rumoured to have played drums on the recording) and Eddie Richards played drums with this touring version of the band with Spencer and Robin right up until the mid 80's, when Keith was in a band called "Blizzard".

  • what fun lol!

i found this on here because my BF works at a studio that has been making a new version of this song ....we love this song it is so summery..it should go on glee or something.

    love you all x

  • I love this track even though its old now. good that someone is doing it again. who aare the names making it? It will be great in the summer :-)

  • Amazing ! I found out yesterday that this fab song is going to be released again ! an artist called Lewis Winyard and some top names have recorded an up to date version in London- set for release this summer..it is stunning - can't wait to hear it again.

  • Deze video maakt leuke herinneringen bij me los. Draai het nog regelematig!

  • This went to #1 for a couple of weeks here in Vancouver Canada back in 1974(if memory serves me correctly). I bought the album, years later I'm to believe at a reduced price, it has the long version of Beachbaby on it. I use to play it on the stereo console, put the bass up and even sing along. Whatever happen to this band? It was beachy at English Bay here in Vancouver today, alot of people hangin' out this afternoon, but none to peachy! Thanks4 postin

  • The lead singer, looks like the lead singer, of the Turtles. And this sounds like the Turtles.

  • Did they really surf?

  • Spencer James on guitar on the left is now with the Searchers.

  • This is clearly not Tony Burrows doing the lip-synching...anyone know who it is?

  • What a bunch of dolls. Must be weird for "people of today",but these were the "idols" of our day. And ,yes ,I see the Zac resemblance and I would love to see one of these kids of today do a remake. of this song !

  • I know it's horrible to say... but for some reason (i think it's the hair and some of the dance moves)... the lead guy reminds me of Zac Efron... from a distance. Close up shots totally debunks that image though.

    *ducks to avoid flying objects*

  • Romantic Brothers - FLOWERS - ! Real smash about real situation! It's i-pod's fav fab KILLER! Listen it! Next beach idol:)

  • The top song when I got married. (The first time) L.O.L.

  • another from the greatest decade for glam

  • love this song always makes me happy when i am in a bad mood

  • @girlfromhazleton53 Does put a smile on your face, doesn't it?

  • The lead singer is wearing his pants in the European way! And he has an upward erection without the use of Viagra!Groovy man!

  • maybe he's just 'gifted'....

  • @wheelchairmommy Gifted is if it hung down to his knee, in the American way!

  • lmao....have u seen the video for Andy Kim "rock me Gently"...there are 2 versions...check out the one where it's a night sceen...Damn that man is ....very gifted....lol

  • but....I'd still be his Beach Baby :P

  • Tony Burrows... Surely the first member of the Pop and Roll Hall of Fame! Truly, there needs to be a complete retrospective for this guy and his amazing run.

  • They owe the Beach Boys a lot for this song the way it sounds, harmonies, and the changes in tempo aka Good Vibrations, etc. This sounds like the Beach Boys if they had been produced by Dick Clark. Great song, but a close knock-off of Brian Wilson's style.

  • Now that song brings back some great memorys

  • It's crap innit? Be honest. But tell ya what - I love it. Sincerely like this song, just makes me feel good. And what's wrong with that? And yes, ZZ Top had formed at that time, surprised to see the T-Shirt though.

  • Ah great, this song always makes me happy..

And take a good look at the singers t-shirt.. ZZTPOP(S)????.

Was ZZ already founded that time?

  • I remember this song.

    I still love it.

    Thanks for posting Beach Baby!

    George Vreeland Hill

  • 1974 strikes again!

  • My guess is Tony Burrows has the record for most hits on the charts that used someone else's name. Seems there was one show of Top of the Pops that Tony had three different chart hits the same week - and none of them were performed by him on the show.

  • This song brings back a ton of memories.

  • simple but affective and very catchy

  • It's amazing how simple the sounds were back then. Guitars, bass, simple drum setup. Now, the arenas are so much bigger, you have to have much larger amps, and that leads to having a larger drum kit so you can actually hear the beat.

  • I remember this back in my high school days in the mid 1970's and thought they were the continuation of the beach boys group. I thrilled to see this music video of this group for the first time since the 1970's; missed those innocent days compared to today's youth that riffed with condescending rap music today.

  • Just a great fun summer song. Now I need to check out Reunion "life is a rock but the radio rolled me"

  • Love this song, have it on my ipod everytime I hear it I smile and have to sing along!! those were the days!!

  • WOW ITS BEEN YEARS SINCE I HEARD THIS ONE TY FOR POSTING JUST GREAT ty aristacourt for sharing 5*****

  • A Really Great Song!!! 5*s Thank You Jon & paul....Anita...

  • I actually thought First class singer was Tony Burrows, doesnt look like him . *****5 stars for the song.

  • Tony Burrows did sing this. This guy was a stand in and lip-synched this for a television program.

  • a special one hit wonder....I miss the 70's

  • Me too!

  • A young Spencer James on Guitar eh? Now with the Searchers!

  • A definite feel good hit for the peak of summer

  • The singer doesn't appear to be Tony Burrows, the original lead singer of the song.

  • Cool song from the 70's great song to listen to in the dead of winter. Thanks for posting!!!!

  • He does some cool Ian Curtis-style moves at 0.20...

  • the BEST song for riding to he beach!!!!

  • The Beach Boys would have done a GREAT cover of this song!

  • Thank god that thought never entered their mind. Bubble gum.

  • Greeeaaaat music =) Makes me feel all happy inside 8-)

  • Incredible. I remember this song when I was a child! My parents had it on A-Track I think. Thank you.

  • The drummer isnt even a drummer, the song is played as a shuffle, he is playing 8th notes, hard to watch!

  • Am I the only one who remembers this song being sung by a werewolf? What show was it?

  • Great song and fun film! I don't see the chorus nor the orchestra so I presume they are lipsyncing?

  • Yeah, I know what you mean. But I don't think it's lypsyncing. Serious audio inclusion though. Very nice job.

  • It seems as if a lot of groups were put together for fast cash knowing that they would be one-time situations.

  • The original & recorded version was sung by Tony Burrows, John Carter & my dear ol dad. The guys in the video were hired to do the live PA's and tours, & did a pretty good job by the look of it! All 8 of them are pictured on the First Class album (tho only the 5 who toured are pictured on the singles). Most wrote as well as sang & were involved with many other artists and groups of their time. They all had more than 1hit and fairly long and successful careers so nur to u 2007Beachboy lol :-D

  • I haven't heard this song for over 30 years it seems! it came out during my senior year in high school. Wow, great music and great production. Tell your dad thanks for me!

  • One of favorite summer songs.

  • Nothing like The Beachboys.

The guitarist in the yellow shirt (Spencer James) is now the lead singer with The Searchers. Saw them a couple of weeks ago and they put on a terrific show.

  • This is a tribute, not a rip off.

  • Better to be a "rip off" Beach Boys one hit wonder with a song that people will remember for many years. What will you be remembered for? Crappy youtube comments? People like you destroy any joy in this world, so go back into your hole.

  • Relax dude! Everybody's entitled to an opinion. Just don't happen to like the song or the similarity to my favorite band. Don't take people's comments so personal. Life's too short to get so excited over such a trivial thing!

  • where is Tony Burrows? the man in this video is an imposter

  • often stand-ins performed hit songs especially faceless groups like this one, steely dan, edisonlighthouse etc.

  • yeah erm.. thas my grandad ! looool
