Awesome job all around. Lead singer has that Mama Cass big voice, big gal thing workin. Great horn section too! Chicks who play brass make the best kissers. Long live pucker power! ;-)
Is it nessecary to make the comment that the singer is straying to far from the original? Is it not the point to re-do an orignal, and make it your own? Nowhere on this video does it say this is a liscenced "chicago cover band". She obviously has amazing vocals and of course she hold her own against these musicians.
not a big fan of the lead singer...i prefer Peter Cetera and the feeling he puts into the song...there are too many times where the lead singer in this vid sounds way to lethargic. otherwise, it's a great recording and i love your other vids
@Brad0451 Because YouTube isn't about real talent... its about a bunch of self aggrandizing jackwagons bloviating about how awesome the latest crappy pop diva is or how funny the latest episode of jackass was...
Yes. While they started out in middle school some years ago, all but one of the members had graduated at the time of this video. No shigh school band here.
Then you might search BCMEA and look for St Louis Blues. It is from a few years ago, but it is still one of my favs. I would have posted the link, but it just won't post.
@msneedham ...lol. If you are the Ms. Needham singing here, I meant that as a compliment. I'm an old fart, who's seen the Jefferson Airplane in their prime, and you have a similar voice, but with more soul than Grace. Rock on Soul Sister!
That's at JazzFest in Victoria, BC on July 5th, 2009. The very last performance of this group, after about 5 years of playing together (they started when they were in grade 8 I think.)
Awesome rendition of Chicago's 25 or 6 to 4. I loved the guitar solo, and the tenor sax solo was good. I also can't forget the lead; Man she has some pipes! The only problem is that her singing style doesn't match during the harmony parts, which makes the sound not seem right. The mic should have been turned up for the sax solo, and the entire horn section could have been turned up at the end, but nothing's perfect... right? Great video and great job to everyone in the ensemble.
lol. I never noticed how funny Spencers hair looks from the one side in this video, with his sun glasses sitting up there like that- you can barely see them. Still love this video though. Way to go District of Soul and Wilfred!
What does that comment have to do with this band of 16 people, recorded at a live performance? Do you mean to say that you play all the instruments seen here as well as all of these musicians, and sing as well to boot? You must be some kind of amazing.
A. the studio isn't in the basement. It's on top of a gloriously forested glade, high atop a mountain overlooking a scenic ocean vista!!!!! With deer, squirrels, and hummingbirds frolicking in our midst!
B. This is a live gig. All I did was blend the stereo board feed with the stereo ambient mic feed. Not much producing to do on this one.
B. I posted this comment on the wrong video... i meant to put it on the green onions video. The point i'm trying to make, being a pianist myself, is that if i had expensive guitars and drums and recording equipment around me my whole life i would pick them up at a very young age and eventually get good at them as well.
Mrs. Fumbly here - re: B - Jon has a brother and sister who have grown up around expensive guitars, drums and recording equipment and they're not the least bit interested in music the way Jon is. They appreciate his talent and music expertise but they don't play music like he does.
We basically forced music on Jon against his will. He wanted to do normal "kid" things when growing up... like eating, sleeping etc. But we wouldn't let him until he'd finished his scales. Mmmmm.... scales! Yummy!
I am saying that "me" "i", not everyone. Obviously you need to be born with a love for music. I have been luckily given that gift. But if you love music and you've grown up in a professional music studio, chances are you will be talented at many instruments
My belief is that if you had the interest to learn many instruments and play them well you would do it, regardless of whether the instruments were sitting around your house just waiting for you to pick them up. That is if you had the imagination, committment, drive and ability for it.
my belief is yes that is true to an extent but how can you learn the guitar or drums if you dont have any... and its not like you can get a free drum kit or guitar, it costs money, money that the less fortunate do not have... no guitar, no drums = no ability or opportunity to play/learn them
Unless, you are driven enough to beg or borrow, or simply chose to make purchasing them your top priority. The whole Jon can only do this because his family have lots of money is nonsense. He has skill and talent because he took the time and effort to develop his natural ability.. I have no doubt that Jon would have had the same interest in music had his dad not had a studio for his business. It just would have taken longer because it would have started in middle school instead of home.
Sorry Jon, I usually praise your work but this was all icing,no cake. The chick looked and sounded bored...to American Idol. You're usually a tasty player but in this particular case less would be more (check out the original Terry Kath solo.) It lacked heart.
I was wondering when someone would mention the crazed solo, which was much more frantic than usual for Jon. On this particular occasion, Jon went bizerk because this gig was the very last performance of the group ever. Rightly or wrongly, he wanted it to be the most beastly solo he'd ever played.
Pretty good musicians, I always like horns in rock music, nice voice also. But it is just not a good interpretation of a rock classic, in my opinion of course. It seems to drag a bit and they tried too hard to "jazz" it up. Just doesn't make it for me. But I am always happy to hear some one take a shot at putting their own style on a song. Nice effort.
72hogdog: This version is a little slower than the original version done by Chicago. I'm not sure what you mean by "they tried to hard to jazz it up." As far I can tell, it's the exact same horn arrangement as the original recording. What is "jazzed" up about it?
I meant no offense, simply stating my opinion, which I did point out in my post. Yes, the horn arrangement is nearly identical to the original in sound and arrangement. I found the slower pacing and the jazz phrasing of the vocals to have strayed a bit too far from the original for my personal taste. That's all I was trying to say. Art is, after all, in the eye, or in this case the ear, of the beholder. Perhaps I was a bit pretentious in describing it as "not a good interpretation". My bad.
Incredible. LOVE the female hornplayers. The lead vocalist reminds me of Anne Wilson. Just wish Jon's guitar was more prominent. It does my soul good to see young people honoring these classic rock numbers so well. As much negativity as there is in the media with kids these days, I'm really thankful for this wonderful group. Universe Bless You, gang.
Keep running into this talented Jon Baglo on Youtube! Keep up the great work! Nice job by the whole group.
