Blimey, an M-Speed version being driven rather than thrashed, how refreshing. Has the potential to be one of the last surviving examples in years to come if it stays in the right hands. Still dreading the day it appears on a future YT vid with a total tool behind the wheel who's just watched the complete Fast & Furious DVD box set....again.
@GreenMarineSVX As someone who grew up driving these Appalacian backroads every day many times a day, someone who is accustomed to these roads need only pay attention. In a 2400# sportscar with power steering, if you need both hands to control the car, you don't need to be driving. Come on, you really think every country boy in the history of the south drives with one hand because he wants to look "cool"? That is a very tame road that is quite well paved, and is safer than big city roads by far.
@Drive4Jesus - I would probably have both hands on the wheel more of the time now. It took me a while to get used to getting my right hand back up with frequent shifting. But, yeah, that little car of mine turns so smoothly and easily! I especially thought GreenMarine's "trying to look cool" remark was way over the top. Nice assumption of his that looking cool was on my mind.
@stoone113 - the mazdaspeed version includes a turbocharger, intercooler, stiffer springs, gas-charged Bilstein shocks, a slightly lower stance, stouter stabilizer bars, 6-speed stick, unique Racing Hart alloy 17" rims, and a few other engine improvements (both mechanical and cosmetic) and a few interior upgrades. It's not perfect (aftermarket upgrades can be real nice additions), but it's a pretty good package, and a great car overall.
@ZoomZoomVids The only thing wrong with the MSM is that mazda gave it a bad ECU tune and 'bad' gearing. The Australian SE (MSM) comes with a 3.636 diff ratio which is much better suited to a turbo.
@JD0x0 You're definitely right about the ECU tune. As for the gearing, I'm not knowledgeable enough to offer an opinion, but I know there are numbers of people who would agree with you. I did NOT know the SE came different!
@ZoomZoomVids Yes the SE is the AUS version of the MSM which came with the very sought after 3.636 Torsen. Gearing is mostly preferance but ive found the 6spd is WAY too short for 1st and 2nd to be totally useful especially with a turbo. The 3.636 makes the gearbox more similar to the 5spd (which is actually longer) with 6spd acting more as a OD or double OD.
@ZoomZoomVids see my friend says the same about a Miata, how they are very easy to drive and fun, pretty quick cause they are light, but i get discouraged when I see girls driving them, and recently read its #1 car choice of gay men. Ouch. I'll stick to my nice Z06.
@lamarfamar And I'm sure that changes their mind.........
When I've said "Ricegrinders suck" and someone shows me their Honda civic with a hacked together turbo system pushing all of 6 PSI it makes me a believer! Rice Rools yo!
That was a great run. I wish I could afford a second car right now, otherwise I'd have an old Miata in my garage. That road must be a ton of fun. Just you, your car, and a nice winding road.
how did you go about mounting the camera? i usually secure my camera between the pasanger seat and the head rest. but this prevents be from having a passenger =[
My camera mount system is hardly worthy of the phrase "camera mount!" Unfortunately for your 'Speed Protege, it requires a two seater: with the passenger seat slid all the way back, I tilt the seatback forward, position my full size tripod (with legs all together) at an angle against the rear wall, and then recline the seatback against it to hold it in place. Simple but effective. :)
My 3-year old Canon Powershot S3IS, which I've dropped on concrete sidewalks, the streets of Moldova and Turkey, and rocks deep in the Grand Canyon. The exterior is definitely scarred up and I'm amazed the thing still works, but very glad it does! :)
What an awesome place for a drive, especially in a Mazdaspeed Miata with the top down.
I sure that there were nice drives like that near my home in Central Florida.
Thanks for sharing, I may need to look for a nice drive tomorrow, myself.

I think driving a Miata without succumbing to the stereotype is a sign that one is secure in their masculinity.

12 oc is the worst spot on the steering wheel to hold while driving!

This makes my Mazdaspeed 6 look slow. Sure stock for stock the 6 is faster off the line, but around the twisties even with AWD...well, it's bulky :-P
