I know some people get upset when they think about using animal fur for things, but as far as I am concerned, what better way to honor an animal's life after it became roadkill! Oh, and I love the idea of the free leather. Wish I lived closer to a furniture place..
Hi Sean - Love the idea of sourcing the soft leather... bet all the swatches in my area are long gone by now though...! :-) ...However I will be seeing what I can find locally.
i like the way u sed a roadkilled fox.......but i guess there is some people that is really pissed when they see this bag of yours....the head on the bag was kinda overkill haha but whatever. its a nice bag anyway. its better than leave the fox rotting in the ditch..
Thank you so much for posting this. A lot of other drawstring bag tutorials are really confusing and hard to follow, but this is simple and straight forward and would work just as easily with cloth I would imagine. I was wondering, how were the D-rings sewn into the fox shoulder bag? And, since you mentioned you replaced the strap with leather in previous comments, did that remove the D-rings altogether?
Hi, If you want to make a bag that has a flat base leave the swatches with straight sides &, sew around the outside as normal. Then put your thumb and forefinger inside to form the corners of a rectangle or square base. You will have a little triangle of excess leather at each end of the bottom seem.Mark and sew at right angles to the bottom seam of the bag . you end up with something that looks like the bottom of a tetra pack. Also if you use two strings fed from either end,no clips required..
That's awesome. I was actually thinking about where I could find some bags like this or go about making them myself today. And then I came across your videos and then found this video. You're very creative. I wish there were more people like you in the world. Most people aren't very useful or creative, just destructive. It's always nice to come across someone who breaks the mold and actually does something with the time and material that they have. Kudos.
@Cookingtothemax it would be a good way to get use out of an animal that was killed by a car and it would do a public service for your community. a lot of people would have a problem with it though so i understand. i remember back when coon hides were bringing good money. people would hunt them but also pick them up along side the road.
Before I was born my Dad had a client that went bankrupt. The client made leather products and still had a huge stack of full pelts left. Instead of getting paid the $500 he was owed, my Dad got a stack of full cow hides about 2 meters high. I was still making craft projects out of them until I was about 15. I even sold some of the things I made. Sold some nice vests to a local biker gang.
that fix shoulder bag is terrific. In my opinion, the nylon straps ruin the traditional look though, but do what makes you happy. thank you for the video, and great job once again!
I've never had an interest in this sort of thing, but your video makes it look easy and fun. Your style bags would make nice handmade gifts. I may give it a try and make some for family gifts.
Funny, I found this video by chance while looking for ideas on how to cook a rabbit.
I'm an American and I must say that you Brits seem quite handy.
great deal on the samples i have been using of pant legs and shirt sleves and sewing them shut and adding the draw string but i like your better. i did find som old leather coats at a rumage sale i cut up for scrape too.
i should make a fox hand warmer like the ones Quarter backs and deer hunters use and just make the fur on the inside put a hand warmer in there and hands never cold again
I'd say that the idea of his video was the anti-thesis of making money, really. I often see people selling pouches like this on the net, and asking what I consider absurd amounts of money for little leather pouches just because they're linked to that money swallowing hobbie brand of "Bushcraft". Sean has shown us a way here to get ourselves kitted up without having to spend a fortune.
I with 100%. I have no interest in selling amy of the items I make. I show people how to make things for them selves. Lots more make it your self videos on the way. Not all completly free though but much cheaper than buying them else where.
I love the fox bag..... Now I need a dead fox on the road ....... I dont see alot of that around here... I might have to get one the hard way or the expencive way eather way i want one of them bags... Awesome work great video!
what do you do to the back of the samples to get them the same colour, in the video they liik the same colour of the front of the sample. i am dyin to make one of these bags there brilliant, purfect for carrying tinder and thoes zip lock freezer bags around
I live in the UK ^^ eBay is a good source for finding hides, Im lucky enough to be involved in shooting so have acess to fur, I just dont really know how to tan it, my boyfriend is using this "hide tanning formula" in an orange bottle, and is saying he's getting good results, but id like to see it for myself to see if it is actually good hehe. What tanning method to you use?
's a really nice fox bag, I collect fur and stuff too ^^ Me and my boyfriend are learning the ropes of tanning. Do you make fox bags for people if they pay you, or don't you do that? (Would like a fox bag)
I have never been asked to make anything for some one else. I am happy to make a bay its just finding a fox to use. As I have said I dont hunt and only use road kill. I am looking for a fox for my self as I want to get a complete hide (feet and tail included) Where do you live UK or abroad? I have just finished tanning some deer hides. A fallow deer I was given and a Muntjac I found road kill.
here in the states, i go out "junking"-ppl put old furniture out to the curb for garbage pickup-i got enuf leather(yes REAL)off of a couch to make a shirt & some leggings with-i just put the un-dyed side to the outside ;) also grab leather & suede coats/jackets @ thrift stores
Getting leather from old dicrded sofas is a great idea. An you got enought to make a shirt and leggings. I have a design for a mountain man style coat in my head. Just needed to get enough leather. I'll be looking out for old sofas now. Thanks for the tip.
The leather sample idea ... Genius!!!! I hear the land of leather is going bust so guess where I am going tomorrow! Nice one the silver fox great video
Wow sean m8 that is amazing. The pouches remind me of the medieval days when they would barter, and keep their coins in their pouches! Lord of the rings or something! I'm gonna try and make one one day using what u showed us on this post. Its good to learn new skills init. simo

Another source for inexpensive leather is going to Good Will stores where you can buy clothing including leather coats and jackets very cheaply indeed. A friend of mine recent bought a brown leather coat and was able to make two quivers from the sleeves, dozens of arm gaurds and finger tabs for archery and a pair of moccasins. I think he said the jcoat was $3.00. How many draw string bags you could make from it is anyone's guess but I should think it would be about as many as you'd need.
I know some people get upset when they think about using animal fur for things, but as far as I am concerned, what better way to honor an animal's life after it became roadkill! Oh, and I love the idea of the free leather. Wish I lived closer to a furniture place..
