Make Your Droid a Webcam

@HYTOORTTT What type of phone do you have? What Android OS are you running? If you have any of the Motorola Android phones you may not have to install any of the SDK drivers to your PC. Just go into settings and set USB Debugging Mode on, this will automatically connect the phone as an ADB Interface in Device Manager.

@HYTOORTTT You should be able to find them here on Sony's website. The USB connection on your phone should be switched to PC Mode or Charge Only (depending on your phone, its different for each device). When you go to the settings in your phone do you find anything that says Debugging Mode? If so, make sure that is on as well.

@javiello Thanks. I don't use manycam software, when I tried this app the first time the orientation was fine. It's hard to keep up with all of these issues people are having. I'm working on a revised tutorial video for people who are lost.

@bindsheep I've gotten the green screen before just reselect the webcam that you are using in the program. Mine worked after I turned it on and off a couple times. The green screen means your getting close. Basically its the computers way of telling you its confused.

@paashaas123456789 As far as I know there isn't a way to rotate it via software. I think you just have to turn your phone physically the other way.

For all those who fail at connecting your phones: install the firmware from the manufacturers official website. The software suite will install all the necessary drivers. Get the app and there ya go!

@CodyHolcombex If you get a green screen it means you did not select the usb webcam properly. 1) Connect phone to computer, Open the USB webcam app (on phone), open webcam app on pc (make sure there is no error in box), then start skype and select usb webcam.

People here say that the camera FPS is laggy but I noticed that it is not indeed when the others watch you. I only noticed lag in my own pc watching myself. The pal connected told me that the stream of the video was normal with no lag. I am using an LG Android Phone (Optimus 3d)

Hi MiToxik07. Thanks a lot for this tutorial. Thanks to you I have saved a bunch of dollars. I was about to buy a webcam but finally I managed to make it work. I had to unplug all the USB devices though. Iniatilly the screen was all in green color but I just unplugged the USB devices including the mouse and tried again and finally showed correctly the video stream signal. What is surprising is that although in my comptuter the fps are low, the people connected to my cam watch a normal frame rate

@LilSam3592 Another thing you would find if you had it working would be that it is very laggy and the frame rate is very very low. It was worth persevering with for me because the clarity and saturation are vastly better than my desperately bad dedicated webcam and video chat is important to me, but other people need to choose their battles!

@fartybraindeath that's true. It's pretty laggy depending on the phone because I've tried it multiple different devices and the faster the phone the better it performs. Like the HTC Thunderbolt and Motorola ATRIX 4G has been handling it pretty well. Definitely faster frames too.

@LilSam3592 the green screen usually comes up when the program your using doesn't recognize that the phone is actually connected or if you have the wrong drivers that could be an issue too. It took me a few tries to get it down. Thanks for trying.

@sujiro don't use windows update. download your ADB drivers and install the device as an ADB device under driver properties.

ADB - is Android Debug Bridge

SDK - Software development kit.

There are multiple ways of installing ADB drivers on your computer, depending on the android device.

For example, most phones like my droid x if you put the phone in "debugging" mode the ADB is automatically installed. No need for extra files.

If the command prompt thing is checking then disappearing that is a good thing. typically if it doesn't see your phone as an ADB device it stays on screen instead of closing out.

When you open skype is the screen green?

@gamermcgee My phone usually doesn't pop up as usb composite, depending on the USB connection method I'm using. Try PC-Mode or Media Sync and make sure your phone is in Debugging mode. In most cases ADB driver will show up when you using Debugging mode.

or you could not turn on usb debugging and download an app called droidcam(free) or droidcamX(paid) and get the client for your type of os and use your phone as a wireless webcam that you can buy at a store for over $100. so instead of paying money you get the same thing you showed here with the added bit of not needing a wire (wireless required for droidcam)

@LahainaGeneration I've looked into it and this app doesn't allow you to change the Frames. I think this app is very dependent on memory and the reason for the slow frame rates is because the phone doesn't have enough.
