I remember watching Star Trek as a child and watching Spock make that gesture and I was so enthralled by it I went and got rubber bands and put them around my fingers and left them split for days so I could finally do it. =D Been able to do it since I was like 7! ^^
Despite that actors often cannot be taken on their word when such a spotlight is on them, this has the ring of truth - in which case it's a brilliantly told story, genuinely heart-warming and funny.
Star Trek has become a cultural phenomenon of tremendous power and it's this that makes this simple tale of Nemoy's actually profound.
Absolutely wonderful story! One additional thought though: personal charity, compassion for those in need, personal dignity...good. But when one hears "Social Justice?", be very afraid.
It's amazing the way an actor can speak so passionately about a part no one would blame him for getting sick of after all this time. What a guy................
I've never understood what the thing is about it that people find difficult to do, I've never had a problem doing it. Maybe that's just cuz I used to play the piano lots and lots though.
It was inspiring to know that the Vulcan greeting had its beginning in this way. I was honestly overawed when I saw Leonard Nimoy in the new Star Trek movie. He brought such dignity, strength, and sheer presence to the screen. I was so impressed with attention to detail in the individual characters, and "look" of the film. Long live this wonderful man whose voice still sends shivers up my spine! JG
@Bugatti169 Oh, I was making that hand gesture from beginning to end. LOL Heard him speak back in the 80's. He's magnificent. Very personable with an amazing presence.
Nimoy should come to my school...but they would appreciate his awesomeness. Only the Communications students (and myself...and I would probably drag my best friend to listen just because doesn't like ST) would go and that would be about 20 people in the lecture.
Seeing this shouldn't get me as excited as it did...
Thank you so much for this! I always love hearing what Leonard, himself, has to say about Spock. Thank you GR for developing Spock, and thank you Leonard for bringing him to life. Most iconic character ever.
There is something so indescribably wonderous about Leonard Nimoy - he's just facinating - and he seems like such a lovely person, too! Having him in Star Trek is one of the best things that ever happened to television.
I always dismissed him as sort of a putz, mainly because he was an actor -a profession I tend to hold in very low regard. But he actually seems like a hell of a guy. Cheers Nimoy, even if you never know it. I'm glad this video was forwarded to me
Leonard Nimoy is so awesome!! He's a great actor, and my mom has some tapes with him singing. I own all of the original star trek, and they are phenomenal. Great work, Leonard!!
By the way, Leonard is an AWESOME name. It's fun to say. Yay!!
It freaks with my mind to see this man who for decades portrayed a character void of emotion be so emotional in this speech! And the way he describes the cohanim ritual with such human energy and passion. He is truly blessed. Live Long And Prosper Mr. Leonard Nimoy!
Wow! I always wanted to see something like that. I would love to hear Nimoy talk about God, or his faith in God. I always wanted to get shatner's take on that subject too.
Definitely up there with the great masters of acting, Ian McKellen, Christopher Lee, and all of them! He is such a great guy! Thank you very much for posting this, I appreciate it!
Leonard Nimoy is always a great "rock" to come back to. He's solid, he's true and he's a symbol of America's greatest and most virtuous things. God bless you Leonard!
