There is absolutely no other that can make such meaning full songs in this life time.I love all her songs and since childhood I can still sing most!! keep going Tracy!!
At about 7 years old, this album helped form the roots of what I would consider quality music for the rest of my life to come. The magic is that I was so young that the songs only became deeper and more meaningful with time... beyond the beautiful rhythm, melodies, and, of course, voice.
I LOVE TRACY CHAPMAN. when i was a kid my dad would play her albums over and over. now 15 years later im doing it . She is a legend !! and such a beautful voice too :)
great song great song great song great song great song great song great song great song great song great song great song great song great song great song
Reminds me of the best english teacher i've ever had. She really unlocked the language for me - by using awesome music like this (which just entered the chats back then). She'd let us listen and fill in gaps in the lyrics, and what should i say, not a week later the whole class knew the whole album by heart :)
if you could sing like her, you could be anywhere, it doesn`t really matter if her ideeas are positive, or negative, but she sings the truth, the truth and the reality, that all of us should see, listen, understand and leave !
I'm thinkin chick needs to start pulling herself up by the bootstraps... I'd like to hear a song about what she's thankful for. I understand completely how she would feel the need to sing about her experiences with racial violence, murder, domestic violence, a sick parent... but it can start bringing me down... especially by the time she's now whining about having to work for a living?? Sounds like a pretty decent arrangement to me, especially in this economy.
interesting point...she sings about hope a lot which I suppose is positive but the frustration about life being a rat race deffo comes through in many of her songs.
@AzureHvn She's COMPLAINING, right? In this case, it happens to be about rich people who she thinks take advantage of "good people." If you have a different take, don't just try to talk above me, please enighten me.
@Goodness250 You miss the point. Her songs are not about herself, they are about all of us who have suffered at the hands of other human beings, the exploited, the abused, the discriminated and marginalized in general.
youtube rocks!!!! O Tracy Chapman, how you soothe the soul of a girl who grew up dreaming of a world where we could all stand face to face with out malice in our hearts. We still haven't made it there, but her music gets me by for now. She's amazing and time has definitly told how brilliant she is.
Secret of happiness never getting tied down to bills, credit etc. To be free to go where you will. How I wish I had listened, now even though I do not feel a need for "things" . I must spin as a wheel in the machine from the debt I gained from gaining stuff and losing stuff the debt is still there and now I have a babe too so can't just run away..Nope. Spinning the cogs and the wheels: a human resource what I always never wanted to be. so i will be dreaming, dreaming, dreaming of freedom.
@elevenoften i've thought long and hard about that... sadly, i got as far as concluding that the desire for excess got rid of the barter system and introduced money. desire for excess continued and then debt came along.
I saw a tribute she did for Odetta (civil rights activist and AMAZING singer just incase your wondering who:-)...she is from the school of many greats...nothing compares to her in todays music....acoustic stuff nowadays if very introspective and more about the individuals plight rather than the common plight of human kind.
More than 2 decades since this album was released and it still packs a powerhouse punch. Poignant, relevant, timeless. Arguably, one of the best debut records ever........
Yeah it's a great album from start to finish. It's right up there with GnR's Appetite for Destruction as a one of the best debuts of all time. I liked her second album a lot, however many people didn't like it. I wonder why? Be Careful of My Heart is a great song.
