I like FFVI and FFVII, but I love FFVI more for its music because it was the best of Uematsu's Works. FFVII had only very few songs I really loved such as "The Great Warrior" and Aerith's Song, but the best off of the Final Fantasy Series is not this song; But Dancing mad...I just happen to LOVE this song...
Good choice! - but for me the best SNES music is the ending theme of Super Mario World: Four minutes of pure epicness and so many variations getting more and more virtuosic! Listen to that you can hear Miyamoto laughing!
Agreed. Best song, plus this was my all-time favorite gaming moment. I saved outside the opera house just so I could watch it over and over. I swear I've seen this scene hundreds of times. My friends all thought it was stupid. I thought it was magical.
one of those things you cannot truly appreciate unless you played it in real time. Back then, it was a break through in VG music, and the scene that it was used in was brilliant. Master piece.
@ocsdriver lol i got bored outa my mind 1 day, got me a SNES emulater for my wii... @DerrickJMitchell The game you're thinking of is Final Fantasy IV, and in its original US release it was called Final Fantasy II, because the Japanese Final Fantasies II and III weren't released in the US until pretty recently (Incidentally, V wasn't released stateside either).

I don't think I've gone to a single Final Fantasy VI video without someone saying "Final Fantasy VII sucks!" or "Final Fantasy VI is nothing compared to VI!" And then, everyone is like "You stupid FFVI fanboy faggot! GTFO! Go kill yourself!" It makes the people defending it look like evil people, and people hate it more. . . Just saying,.
@maniamaster2 Both ff VII and ff VI are classics and are the finest examples of storytelling that exist in gaming up to this point. IX was great too. squall was a little emo which takes some of the shine of VIII
@maniamaster2 I don't care if they hate FF6, they likely didn't play it. FF7 is only visually superior to FF6. Sephiroth is a bit of a bore, but that being said, I do believe Sephiroth is the most funnest boss fight in FF history. But the maniacal Kefka is far more interesting and motives clear.
the 'singing' part.. it gets me everytime.. i can see the sprites in my mind when i hear this.. she may be singing the song because its part of the opera.. but she is letting her emotions out when she sings..she's trying to tell them all how she really feels.. no offense to the new FF games.. but this game is far more emotional and on a deeper lvl than them.

@Minan3 technically terra is better at magic cause she learns more. and at lvl 98 or 99 she learns merton. which the only other way to learn that spell is through the summon knights of the round and you have to hunt down every dragon up to the last 3 in kefka's tower to get that. sooo ya. true celes will naturally learn ultima around lvl 70 - 80. and tell me if im wrong but the spell ultima has never looked as good as in ff6. ff8 version blew chunks on my screen lol
@sandune02 I know what knights of the round is. An uncle on my father's side is a final fantasy fanatic. Kotr is in a cave that is only asccessible by a certain colored chocobo. I never got kotr. As far as Terra and Celes, I considered the both of them, equals. My honest opinion is, final fantasy 7 got part of it's charm from Final fantasy VI. I liked FFVI for the large party, but with no apparent leader, they all had a story.
"Oh my Hero, so far away now. Will I ever see your smile. Love goes away, like night into day. It's just a fading dream. I'm the darkness, you're the stars. Our love is brighter than the sun. For eternity, for me, there can be, only you my chosen one. Must I forget you? our solemn promise? Will Autumn take the place of spring? What shall I do, I'm lost without you. Speak to me once more.
Ok, great list, with a few left out...Super Metroid...Ridley's Theme, Brinstar Red, a number of Chronocross tunes should have been here too...Maybe eve na Castlevania tune...still a good list but it should have been a little longer to get all the truly best in. Thanks for this trip to the BEST age of videogaming...sorry to see it gone.
Of all the Final Fantasies FF6 was always and will always be my favorite... The music, characters, and story are all there and that is something very few games can claim at this time. This game doesn't need crazy cut scenes or graphics to make it the best!
I will always remember how this song touched my heart. I mean, the first time i heard it in the opera it was epic. But i was really blown away when it played again much later *spoiler alert* ya know when Cid dies and Celes is suicidal and this theme plays...i swear i shed a tear. And not many games do that :3
We must part now, my life goes on. But my heart won't give you up. 'Ere I walk away, let me hear you say, I meant as much to you... So gently, you touched my heart. I will be forever yours. Come what may, I won't age a day, I'll wait for you always...
Now..
Go listen to Darkness and Starlight. For me, there can be no replacement to the original, in all its 16-bit midi glory, but if ever there was a piece Nobuo poured his heart and soul into...
Oh my hero, so far away now. Will I ever see your smile? Love goes away, like night into day, it's just a fading dream. I'm the darkness. You're the stars. Our love is brighter than the sun. For eternity, for me there can be, only you, my chosen one. Must I forget you? Our solemn promise? Will autumn take the place of spring? What shall I do? I'm lost without you. Speak to me once more.
@MADEMEBONES This was the song that freaking inspired Aerith's theme... they're both good. Don't get me wrong, I love FF7 just as much as the next guy, but it's damn near impossible to hate this brilliant music, or FF6 in general. It's just beautiful.
Anybody who does not pick this game up and play it from beginning to end is doing themselves an injustice. FF6 is proof that video games have the potential to be more than mind-numbing. It can permanently change your fucking life.
@wee187 yes yes yes si si si si siiiiiiiiiiiiiii....... simplemente la mejor... puedo pasar toda la vida escuchandola. y el dia de mi muerte queiro escucharla por ultima vez y morire feliz! DIOS AMO ESTE TEMA..aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
When i played until this scene on FF3 my brain cannot process anything i just had to comeback home to keep playing. At this part i got shocked when i met ultros on the top of that teather.
And when that old Teather's owner confused Celes with an opera singer, ooooh i melt, my brain melt with the story line but when Celes actually sang a song.... that was the most memorable moment in my player history.
but when that damn Ultro get in scene to ruin the play, oh, I was Shellshock.
@nahum67 by the way this song is actually singed, there is a real opera song behind this song, try to search for it on youtube or Google and experience the most beautiful song with real voices.
Agreed with a lot of your ratings - Stickerbush Symph, Factory, and K.Rool -all my favs from DK, & possibly of all time. Agreed with FFIII songs, although Locke & Rachel's theme is beautiful. Take it you've never played SuperCastlevania IV? If so, you'd know that this is among the very best game music of all time. I know it's hard to high-rate Uematsu's themes from FFII (primitive sounds), but "Within the Giant" is an amazing tune. Add Legend of Mystical Ninja "Ninja Castle" & you'd be set! THX!
I like this top thirty, but I'm not gonna lie, I'm definitely thinking there should have been some mother or metroid music on it. Maybe I'm just biased because they are some of my favorite games, but there were some kick ass tracks in those games.
Easily the most complex and well-scored theme on the SNES, and I didn't even remember hearing this. FF6's music was higher quality than all music until maybe XBOX/PS2 generation, and I would argue to say that the emotional effect of these themes is only rivaled by Lost Odyssey & Final Fantasy VII, but not surpassed by a long shot.
Back in those days, you had to use your imagination and put yourself in the shoes of your character. With 3D, as good as it is, we no longer have that immersion.
@nickz777 Similar, but even the death of Aeris/Aerith doesn't compare to this. The original Playstation had many, many times more capacity than the SNES, yet FF7's music, as good as it was, wasn't as good as FF6's.
This song is absolutely beautiful. It almost moved me to tears the first time I heard it, a feat made even more impressive when you consider that it was done before orchestrated in-game scores and voice-acting. There aren't a lot of modern gaming scores that can claim that level of excellence.
Can't argue with your #1. But no killer instinct theme, battletoads, super double dragon? A better title for this list is the top snes role playing themes, plus donkey kong. Ha!
This is one of those scenes you remember fondly, but would likely be cheesy as all hell if they did it in a game like Final Fantasy XIII. Be glad you have these warm and fuzzy memories but don't believe they would work today.
The whole Opera Scene in FFVI is amazing, best ever in moment in video games ever if I may say. And of course it's this brilliant music that makes it so incredible and unforgettable. You have to love Nobuo, the modern day Mozart!
I remember the first time I got to this part of the game as a kid, I actually got the chills when I heard the song. Funny thing is, I just got the chills listening to it again.
Argualbly the best Crowning Music of Awesome for the game. Aria de Mezzo Carattere was awesome in game. Imagine if they could have done the proper vocals for it.
Okay, to your credit, this song doesn't even sound like a SNES track, so props for listing it at number 1 (I know it's a SNES track; I have one and I have the game).
Speaking of SNES, I just got one. Any recommendations that I should play? I have, but haven't beaten Mario All Stars + Mario World, Zelda: LttP, Donkey Kong Country, FFVI or Secret of Mana. I've beaten FFIV, Chrono Trigger and Super Metroid. And I'm in the middle of playing FFV. So, any recommendations for games not beaten?
Filled with awesome "We-Are-Heroes-And-Save-The-World-In-A-Nice-Adventure"-Feeling: Secret of Mana. I recommend not playing it alone, it wasn't really made to be played single player (it was even programmed for three players :-D I played it with my bro on Snes and later with same bro + one friend on Emulator, that's awesome!)
For Single player, i recommend "Secret of Evermore" highly over "Secret of Mana". Gameplay is similar, but feeling is totally different. While Secret of mana is, as I already said, a happy adventure to save the beautiful and nice world with your friends, Secret of mana is of a completely different caliber. It is perfectly giving you the feeling of being lost in another world, where you are desperately trying to get back to your beloved home. Darn Youtubes Letters per post limit
The main differences that accomplish these feelings are Music and colours. While Secret of Mana has nice and heroic music, sometimes happy, sometimes sad but always epic, secret of Evermore has more realistic sounds, giving you the feeling you are actually really inside this world that seems to not wanna let you go anymore. The colours in Secret of Mana are always bright and make you feel happy, while Secret of Evermore is depressingly dark. Much more to say, but just try them
@REALmikegordan FF Mystic Quest, Terranigma, 7th Saga( HARD !), illusion of gaia, Tales of phantasia, ActRaiser, Demon's Crest ( Great game), Earthbound, Harvest moon, Jungle Strike, Kirby super star 8 in 1( no jokes, it's a nice cute game!), Mega man x, Castlevania x and Super Castlevania 4...enjoy!
When I first watched your countdown, I only knew Zelda, Mario Cart and Secret of Mana. I also did play a Dockey Kong Country long ago, but I don't remember which one it was.
While watching it, I mostly heard the OSTs and thought, they were some good music. I read your descriptions, tried to imagine the scenes you explained and thought, that the music sure seemed to fit them. when I came across one of the few titles I knew, I was awestruck and completely killed by nostalgia.
How can something so simple be so great...

@BestSnesMusic songs to add in top 30:
Mega Man X3 - Zero's theme (best SNES guitar song ever)
FF6 - Shadow's theme
Earthbound - Sanctuary Guardian
Super Mario RPG - Smithy's theme <------ =D
And of course...Final Fantasy Prelude theme (from any of the SNES FF's since they sound pretty much the same)
Which songs to take out? Good question =)

I liked FFVI for the large party, but with no apparent leader, they all had a story.

this is where final fantasy 7 got aeris theme ^__^

I haven't even played final fantasy 6, but yet this song sounds nostalgic to me.

@dct1700d Chross wasn't for the SNES, but I guess you could include some tunes from Radical Dreamers.

@dissident93 true enough, but Radical Dreamers would have been a great addition, like you said

this is a great song, ff6 is an even greater game... but i think the ff prelude tops all other ff songs, its pure simplicity and yet so very powerful

i love your choices, but a bit dissapointed you didnt put exdeath theme, like when he first breaks free
master6339 8 months ago
Of all the Final Fantasies FF6 was always and will always be my favorite... The music, characters, and story are all there and that is something very few games can claim at this time. This game doesn't need crazy cut scenes or graphics to make it the best!

I freaking cried the first time I heard this. (Of course I failed and had to do everything from the beginning.)
Gives me chills everytime...

I will always remember how this song touched my heart. I mean, the first time i heard it in the opera it was epic. But i was really blown away when it played again much later *spoiler alert* ya know when Cid dies and Celes is suicidal and this theme plays...i swear i shed a tear. And not many games do that :3

The song is great but IMHO its not the "best" Snes music. How come there is not a single Super Metroid's music?

We must part now, my life goes on. But my heart won't give you up. 'Ere I walk away, let me hear you say, I meant as much to you... So gently, you touched my heart. I will be forever yours. Come what may, I won't age a day, I'll wait for you always...
Now..
Go listen to Darkness and Starlight. For me, there can be no replacement to the original, in all its 16-bit midi glory, but if ever there was a piece Nobuo poured his heart and soul into...

When i played until this scene on FF3 my brain cannot process anything i just had to comeback home to keep playing. At this part i got shocked when i met ultros on the top of that teather.
And when that old Teather's owner confused Celes with an opera singer, ooooh i melt, my brain melt with the story line but when Celes actually sang a song.... that was the most memorable moment in my player history.
but when that damn Ultro get in scene to ruin the play, oh, I was Shellshock.
nahum67 10 months ago
@nahum67 by the way this song is actually singed, there is a real opera song behind this song, try to search for it on youtube or Google and experience the most beautiful song with real voices.
nahum67 10 months ago

With 3D, as good as it is, we no longer have that immersion.

nickz777 1 year ago
@nickz777 Similar, but even the death of Aeris/Aerith doesn't compare to this. The original Playstation had many, many times more capacity than the SNES, yet FF7's music, as good as it was, wasn't as good as FF6's.
cbrhawk1 11 months ago
@nickz777 This is technically first, so Aerith's theme reminds you of this, really.

This song is absolutely beautiful. It almost moved me to tears the first time I heard it, a feat made even more impressive when you consider that it was done before orchestrated in-game scores and voice-acting. There aren't a lot of modern gaming scores that can claim that level of excellence.

Aria Di Mezzo Carattere? Suck it One Winged Angel. This song, this scene, is the most epic in FF history.

REALmikegordan 1 year ago
@REALmikegordan
Filled with awesome "We-Are-Heroes-And-Save-The-World-In-A-Nice-Adventure"-Feeling: Secret of Mana. I recommend not playing it alone, it wasn't really made to be played single player (it was even programmed for three players :-D I played it with my bro on Snes and later with same bro + one friend on Emulator, that's awesome!)
ongyerth 1 year ago
@REALmikegordan
Darn Youtubes Letters per post limit
ongyerth 1 year ago
@REALmikegordan
Much more to say, but just try them
ongyerth 1 year ago
