A sonic boom happens when an object goes at a speed higher than the speed of sound. Most likely in your situation, it was probably a fighter plane. They often go faster than the speed of sound, even if you can't hear the plane, when it goes over the "sound wall", it makes an explosion-like sound, that can be heard from miles. I used to live near a military base :p
