AH! FINALLY! An explanation of How Kurosawa's Movies have been copied over the years, and what in turn influenced Kurosawa as a Filmmaker. It's all connected.
(oh, and don't pay any attention to idiots like bassuan, there are a lot of blowhards out there who couldn't on their most creative day of their life make something as good as you have here)
I think you did a great job on this documentary. I have to disagree with you comment below, about A Bugs life. It's good but I would argue that Magnificent 7 probably is the greatest adaptation of Kurosawa. Anyway this is just an opinion, and you have obviously put much more thought into this topic than I have so I will give you the benefit of the doubt.
ok i see all these bad comments down here and i cant help but agree with them, although i dont want to put u down because it seems like u put a lot of time into putting this together. but i will say this. akira kurosawa cannot be compared to any other director. i'd say he was the epitome of an artist, that goes beyond directing. he really defines the word individual. i dunno what else to say.
I think this is very well made and well documented at the same time. Naysayers and bashers should either keep their mouths shut or strive to come up with something better.
There are great directors in the world, but is no way you can make a movie, or a musical piece or a paint without copy some of the masters. The masters themselves did from somebody else. To call plagiarism in any artistic work is just plain BS. Ask all the big directors and they will agree.
@toufiques and you? not to compare??? because any artist in their own right can't be functionally compared to another but ummm Spielberg did Color Purple, Jaws, Shindler's List Both men have a talent that is great on their own. Try being a little more open and less critical. Nice piece kid. Never let critics stop you from doing what you want...Orson Wells per se...
I am not american nor japanese so my view is different. Since I was a kid in Peru I have seen the work of Akira K. I enjoyed "sankuokai" a TV serie made from his anime/manga. Then I enjoyed its copy: "Star Wars". Americans like to call it an "influence" to the rest of the word is a "Copy". One thing is to be influenced by reading a wide variety of western or russian novels and another a "Copy". the 1990 award was nothing to what he really deserved, a Consolation Price. Thank you for your video.
Very well done documentary! I especially liked the fact that you approached the subject of Kurosawa's influences in a backward manner from most other documentary material; most cite John Ford's influence but don't go into any detail. My suggested title would be "Kurosawa and the West" or something that incorporates the idea you promulgate about his Western influences and the influence he had in the West. But overall, this is an excellently made film!
Great job, Kyle!! I agree-this is could easily be a professional piece....well done. I have always thought Kurosawa's ties with the West (both his influence and influences) would be a great topic to investigate! speaking of ties between West and East, have you heard of "Tokyo!"? It is a compilation of 3 short films, all set in Tokyo, and it's amazing to see the ties between Eastern and Western cultures that are present....
Many thanks 4 vid. There is a movie I cant find anywhere (made in the 80's).I remember a scene from a "fuedal japan story" the red and black army are at war. red army forms a square of spearmen & the black army rides through the red army on horses, all the way to the Shogun sitting on a stool then a shogun v shogun sword fight in a creek.does anybody know this scene or movie? I was young when I saw it and I haven't stopped trying to find it.Its not Kagemusha or James Cavelle Shogun.please help!!
The look of Yojimbo is influenced by Ford... well yes.. but a very important difference needs to be expressed. Ford's compositions were very focused on a relationship between landscape and civilization..this (from memory) never happens in Yojimbo...I think, referring to this film, thats an unfair point... characterization and themes maybe...
its nice to see other people interested in good movies though.
P.S whats the music this starts with...its on the tip of my tongue and its infuriating me?
The only problem I have with your film is that the volume on your narration needs to be fixed. (make it louder and more crisp) other than that it's perfect--(you ought to contemplate doing some cleaning on it and submitting it and the idea to Criterion Collection [if nothing else they may be interested in taking your idea and making their own to add to their dvds (which I find lacking in extra content)]
To those who find this man's writing and narration lacking, I say give him some slack. He's not a professional, but at least he took time and did his research. Which of you who complain can do better? If so, put your video where your mouth is. P.S. For those interested there is a colorized version of "Shichi no Samurai"(Seven Samurai)in the works and it will include a restored B&W version.
It is very well done. I noticed the issue of the narration myself. High school senior project ! I thought it was a documentary from Criterion Collection or something until someone pointed out about the narration. Then I looked at the details from the user. Good job Kyle.
Admittedly the video has got problems. However, for people who are not very knowledgeable about film I am willing to bet A Bug's Life is the most notable movie.
Agreed Im writing a report on this same subject for film school. I dont think preentation video will be as good as this. looks awsome bru
