Fantastic job! Great playing and singing, with such sensitivity and subtlety. I'm wondering what your interpretation of the lyrics are... I just picked up this piece and am learning it myself. Anyone have any insight into the meaning? I may be off, but it sounds like a confession that the singer is dying, perhaps of some terminal disease... anyone else have ideas...?
@superheroman04 i've been learning this piece right now and what my voice teacher and i kinda saw was something along the lines that the singer doesn't feel the same love for their boyfriend/girlfriend and they realize it now, basically they're asking would it be better if they told their bf/gf that fact now and deal with the hurt, or not tell them and pretend that everything is fine, even when it's not-but that's just our intepretation
This is gorgeous. What a talent. I can't sing and play piano at the same time without screwing them both up. One or the other! Massive kudos. Beautiful voice.
I recently learned about this song, and I hadn't heard a recording of it. I've been playing it on the piano and trying to sing it myself, but it just doesn't sound right with a female voice.
I was blessed to run into this video. Thank you so much for posting it. Beautiful voice and beautiful music. Kudos to Scott for his vocals and piano, and thank you for sharing this beautiful song with everyone.
Did you use the version in the JRB Collection? Lauren Kennedy does it in a different key that works much better for the female voice than the one in the songbook.
actually a better way would be to use something like youtube downloader, and then use Total Video Converter to convert it into a wav file, and then use itunes to convert it to mp3. I tried using Total video converter to convert it straight to mp3, but my player didnt seem to be able to play it. you get better sound quality this way.
Beautiful work. It's so hard to sing and play piano at the same time, let alone with fantastic technique, and with a song as challenging as this one. Fantastic vibrato, expression and tone. Really great work.
I have seen so many people on YouTube making pitiful attempts to play OR sing Jason Robert Brown's music-- you do both incredibly. You have a lot to be proud of.
Scotlas- I commented about you earlier (check out "All the Wasted Time" but I wanted to make sure you know how incredible you are. It really takes a lot to play and sing. Also I know what it feels like to play the piano and disappear in the background but you really play a big part in all these incredible pieces. So thank you for sharing your brillian talents!
wow..I was just randomly searching JRB stuff...and came across your video. you have an amazing voice...and piano skills to match! I hadn't heard this song yet...and now I'm not sure I want to hear it by anyone else! nice work!
jennasizzle, this is from the Lauren Kennedy CD "Songs of Jason Robert Brown". The sheet music is available in "The Jason Robert Brown Collection" (you can get the CD and book at Amazon.com).
Uh, not so much yikes. But it doesn't matter because that F# at the end was brilliant. You know, "If I told you now that we're never really safe..." I mean, of course you know the one.
Oh, they sounded fine XD It's so hard on any instrument that requires breathing technique to reach high notes quietly... I'll always hate composers who wite a top G for flute pianissimo... seriously, though, it sounded fine.
Wow, great job!

where can i get the sheet music for this?
sarahr1985 4 years ago
The Jason Robert Brown Collection- you can get it on Amazon. There's a recording on a CD called Songs of Jason Robert Brown (sung by Lauren Kennedy)
sc0tlas 4 years ago
yeh i listened to that and i didn't like her version
sarahr1985 4 years ago
Hers I think is in A. I think it packs more of a punch in D, which is what you hear here. (Or maybe you're hearing a D-. You know, registrar humor.)

i take it its not from any jrb musical?
sarahr1985 4 years ago
Nope, just a standalone song.

awesome, i can't believe i hadn't heard this song sooner; i got the piano pretty much down...now if only i could sing that F# full voice...argh
definetly like this performance the best out of the rest. Pianists, even if they can sing like you, rarely get the chance to shine, thats great!

sc0tlas 5 years ago
Hey, Scott. I just typed "Jason Robert Brown" into the search and this came up and I'm so glad to have found it.
Excellent performance. I can say it holds a candle of JRB's performance of this song at a Toronto concert.
Hope to hear more in the future.
