I just tried to hit that note that Alfie hits at 7:06 ... i'm a mezzo soprano and i can't even come close without making my ears bleed. What a voice that man has...
@arisnapeforever Well I sincerely doubt that you're attempting to hit it in the same octave as him then :P That note is a high B in the Tenor range. If you're a mezzo soprano, hitting that note in the tenor range should be easy for you. However, hitting that note in the soprano range is another matter entirely, and without training, would be an absolute bastard of a note to hit without hurting yourself :P So i'm assuming that's what you meant, aye?
@hecate235 I agree entirely. For me the more gradual change was more believable. Alfie's take on JVJ while unique I think worked pretty well. That said, I'll still always love Colm but that doesn't detract from the fact that I reckon Alfie did an incredible job too.
I am 13. I saw this a year ago, but it was the play touring the country. It was breathtaking. I really don't know how to describe it. I felt so many emotions, passion, love, hate, sad, victorious, scared, and so many more. Just amazing. I love the Javert in this one, he's really good!
Alfie Boe is a great singer - his "Bring Him Home" literally takes my breath away everytime. But his performance of the Soliloquy shows that he's clearly just a singer and not an actor. It's the entire conceit of the show that in this moment, Jean Valjean is so overcome that he wills himself to change the very essence of his soul. Boe's performance seems like he's at best changing begrudingly, at worst not changing at all. If this wasn't a concert, the entire rest of the show would fall flat.
@jmdixon Others who've seen previous Les Mis have said Alfie had a new take on Valjean. His JVJ doesn't change in an instant, he changes direction, but changing himself... He learns and grows throughout the show, fighting against his anger, and using it to fuel his ongoing transformation. (How Valjean treats Fantine supports that "take.") Alfie got rave reviews here and in the West End from the audience and critics, so others were touched by his JVJ.
are there any other valjeans that anyone can think of who hit that big high note for took my fliiiiiight!!! because the only other person i have heard hit it is Colm Wilkinson and just sounds so much better done like that
When Javert starts singing his part to Jean Valjean, Jean Valjean looks really quiet as if he's trying to hold back saying, "Oh goodness, here he goes again." It's not so obvious that people would wonder why he looks like that. It still fits the scene because he doesn't exactly LOOK like he's thinking that. He keeps a straight face well, but for some reason I get the impression that he's thinking that.
@jessmichelle97 I agree !! This is the only Les Miz I've seen so I was able to watch it & just enjoy the wonderful performances instead of spending that time ripping them apart & comparing them to every other person who's played the part. Nick Jonas is NOT an opera star & he did just great. When he first came on I knew I recognized him but not from where. I almost dropped my teeth when my aunt told me who it was. I never gave 2 hoots about him but I have a whole new respect for him now
@TheNintendo101 Ah. Perhaps referencing the Les Mis song "Master of the House" as a means of comparison for the faux-generosity & charlatain style hucksterism of the biblical god, is stretching a metaphore beyond reason?? Hmm.
My first musical was Andrew Llyodd Webber's Phantom. It was, is, and always will be my favorite musical. Webber has talent in composing and writing musicals. However, it's to each his own. Les Miserables is in my top few musicals though.
Out of all the things Alfie Boe sang in this musical, all brilliantly, this is his true moment of glory because it is all centred on him. Gets to show his true talent as an opera singer and i think that's just perfect
@redvelvetqueen24 be warned... the book is MUCH different from the play and very different from most modern books. It's a very hard and long read. that aside though, you should easily be able to find the book in your local library. Enjoy :)
@wolffan18 really?? How can you compare this with Cats. Webber is a song robber!! Phantom main musical theme was ripped off from Pink Floyd's Echoes (which is a great 25 min piece) that was written almost 15 years before Phantom. As far as cats go, i guess if you're a dancer or something, ok, but the music was terrible
@wolffan18 but why? What is it about that show thats so good? I saw it twice and the music is just bad, the story plot is thin. I'm not comparing Les Mis. I think the only think Webber wrote is JCS. Just about everything else he wrote sounds just like JCS for the most part.
@Abonanno24601 I grew up watching Cats, 'cause my parents love Webber's plays, and Cat's is pretty much based off of a book of short essays about cats, so it's not Webber's fault that there is pretty much no plot in Cats.
@wolffan18 Yeah, TS Elliot. To each is own. JCS I thought was the only good musical he did. I just think that Webber is over rated when u look at things like Les Miserables, Rent, and in some respects, Misss Saigon & Little Shop of Horrors, as far as musical theater goes, also when u look at Roger Waters and the Wall, or Tommy that was just as powerfull as a lot of good musicals I've seen. Theres one or 2 songs in Cats that are ok, but even at WinterGarden in NY, I wasn't impressed. :-)
