  • I'm realizing just how much people project onto u (present company included). not sure why that is. want to hear ur side.

  • Comment removed

  • killer band, no matter how "2deep4u" they try to be.

  • it's the best cover that I ever heard, cause if you hear the original song doesn't seems to be the same song...

  • fantastic fantastic fantastic.

Did i mention that they're fantastic?

  • best balck flag cover ever.

  • its a little interesting to use youtube to peer back at DP through their history. they definitely look a lot less like a Levi's ad in the older vids...

  • love it

  • I would call this Prog folk. Awesome band. One of the best bands coming out of New York in recent years.

  • this band isnt bad. they just think differently than you do. and that's okay.

  • very original, most original thing I have heard, in quite a while.

    very nice

I like the guitar playing, and singing a lot.

lefty with a strat. any other players you can think of in that line?

  • @TheDarmardar

HA HA HA Yes I can :)

  • @makisupa110 No. But neither do they like anything they've never heard before.

  • @makisupa110 I do, well some of it, i think it is some of the most inventive vocal arrangements I've heard in a long time, and i'm 43. I like bon iver, local natives and grizzly bear too. Love what is happening on the indie-folk scene these days.

  • Am I watching the same video as everyone else?

This is so insane! The way a cover should be...completely different.

Not only that but the contrast between his "awful guitar playing" and the angelic voices is amazzzze.

  • the singer is weird and crazy dude.. look how he sing and playing his guitar uts totally freak hahaha.. cool...

  • Yeah, I dunno... I would probably still listen to White Stripes, Pomplamoose, or maybe even Beck if I was in the mood for this. They kinda remind me of Sonic Youth, and I never really liked Sonic Youth... : (

  • @Niven42 sonic youth ? these guys have noting to do with that , they sound very different . Im not sure either you cant hear music or you commented on the wrong video .

  • It doesn't matter what any one thinks, you either get it or you don't. It either speaks to you or it doesn't. It's not a question of good or bad, just whether it makes you feel good or not.

  • I felt in love with this band years ago while they were doing these free gigs around the city. I've been following them, and is amazing the progress in their musicalization and vocal arrangements they had experienced during all these years. With St. Vincent one of the most exciting NY based bands.

  • @vivelavidarocka ...and Bears in Heaven...;7)...and so many others....

  • This album is amazing. Their random stops and starts makes my mind race.

Its great and exactly what I want to do when making music. Well, at least these guys give me hope that my instrumentals aren't that crazy sometimes.

  • the dissonance grates on me. It sounds like he's playing drunk though he's probably just pulling some John Cage bullshit. I can appreciate, but I don't have to listen to it.

  • I really believe that what he's playing on the guitar is intentional. the man knows shit tons about music theory. I've noticed, by listening to the Dirty Projectors, that the use of noise or unstructured melodies in songs makes the structured ones that much prettier.

  • @ivendpeanuts without a doubt it's intentional. it is kind of obnoxious though. which doesn't matter in the end because the core composition of the song is beautiful. on the other hand i probably have a high tolerance for for noise and dissonance because i listen to death metal.

  • @rhdcrossover LOL I think that's exactly the reaction they were expecting. So the joke's on you.

  • holy shit they butchered it

  • well, all this new stuff in the last 10 years has me saying "whats all that about"

kids sing good, but check out mountainman for sum real dealio

  • That album was also in honour of Black Flag, it's a cover album of Damaged.

  • I like The Dirty Projectors, but this is awful.

  • Invest in a guitar tuner.

  • this is...pretty bad

  • ohhh soooo gooooooood my god.

  • he seems to play better sitting down

  • dude needs to learn how to play guitar

  • buddy, you couldn't be more correct

  • ^^ ditto what this guy said.

  • @aselfishimpulse

    I agree.

  • you are an idiot. what is substance to you? amplified power chords? get some taste and stop hating

  • @andoj89 how old are you, 16? this shit will pass, there is no real meaning to this music, it's art school wankery. all you kids saying black flag sucks, have you ever heard damaged? i feel vicariously embarassed through your ignorance.

  • amazing!

  • This sounds sort of rough here. I think they just work better as a studio group.

  • No way, I saw them live a couple weeks ago and they were amazing. Almost exactly how they did in the studio

  • How can you even say that?

  • Air comes out of the lungs, through the trachea, and into the larynx.

    2. The air makes the vocal folds vibrate.

    3. When the vocal folds vibrate, they alternately trap air and release it.

    4. Each release sends a little puff of air into the pharynx; each puff of air is the beginning of a sound wave (see Acoustics 101: Sound Waves and How They Move).

    5. The sound wave is enhanced as it travels through the pharynx; by the time it leaves the mouth, it sounds like a voice.

    6. You hear "Garbage".

  • i love how the drums stay continuous in this song its like his homage to punk, haha just very straightforwards

  • His voice gives me chills when he say's, "I'm gonna take my chance." Awesome remake

  • Sad to say - he is the guy. It's his band. Great albums, though.

  • thats david longstreth doing shit you cant understand. i agree with rlingg1 about great albums, and ill add: great live.

  • i love this it's so chill. Was this video made in like the 90's? Cause it seems like it is

  • i dont think so. that's just their style i guess

  • Please allow me to do it for you...It would be a pleasure...lol

  • Happily. But your ilk have barely the balls to stand and piss or the ovaries to sit and be proud.

  • drugs???

  • ok.......

  • His solo at 2:49 is brilliant trolling of all the people who paid for the tickets.

  • hahaha

  • I'm not sure what this is but is genius

  • this is good avant-garde

  • I find the "bad guitarist" comments amusing because this man can do things on the guitar that you guys can't even imagine. All the more amazing that he can sing while doing it.

  • @palisades Idk man I've imagined some pretty strange things involving a guitar...:P

  • The actor at the scene is playing the emotional role... expressionism of the voice and sound. As the comparison I don't expect straight line and appropriate anatomy in Egon Shiele pictures. Art!

  • Yep!

  • This version is worse than piss in the face

  • I really like this song but I think it's two minutes too long; it could have perfect IMHO. Beautiful harmonies. :)

  • This is really bad...

  • I`ll take your suggestion Fluteman1234

  • then listen to something else

  • Is the goal authenticity or to elicit a desired response via a message from the listener? In which case it is subjective to the experience of cattle who believe this is quality. A great poet knows the rules of writing and thus knows how to break them. Perhaps this ideology has become too widespread amongst lackadaisical talentless hipsters. I wouldn't be so perturbed if they didn't awkwardly try to tremolo (constantly)with the same lack of principal subtlety displayed by Miss America contestants

  • Some advice:

You're not an articulate writer. Don't try to be. There's a difference between the intellegent use of vocabulary and being incomprehensible.

  • Do you even know what you're talking about? It sounds like you just threw together a bunch of "big words" so as to sound intelligent, but you really had no idea what they mean.

  • i bet you don't have alot of friends

  • oh sorry you listen to kanye west you must know alot about music

  • Just stop. Stop everything you're doing. Stop checking your dictionary for good words to use as you hate on one of the most talented and creative bands around at this time. And what rules? Have you ever heard of free jazz? Let them create; it's what the human spirit strives to do, and it's people like you that prevent it from happening. I would like to hear your music you jerk.

  • True dat! andoj89, tell 'em!

  • @andoj89 It's because he isnt "shredding" to some "sick ass" metal.

  • @HeyWingz

spoken like a pro. great band, theres too many stupid judgmental people

  • this makes me angry and bummed out because it ruins the original.

is that the point? is that the objective? if yes, SUCCESS!!

    this totally bums me out.

  • dude, no one gives a shit

  • Way too fey. They don't capture or interperpret the emotion of the song. Paging Dave Mathews.

  • NO. NO NO NO NO.

  • i also saw them with tvontheradio..

    SOOO GOOOD!

  • whats wrong with the tunning

  • i saw these guys last night with tv on the radio there dope crazy vocals the chicks are pretty cute as well. give me a 50s feel

  • dude I saw them to, TVOTR was pimp but these guys blew my mind because it was so unexpected. The drumming is sooo tight!!!

  • what's a terd?

  • wow, drumming complexity has little to do with effectiveness when it comes to art, kid. grow up.

  • You clearly did not see them perform live, he had some sick style and weird off-time polyrhythms.

  • Obviously your not a.................Drummer.

  • ivy league black flag covers. uh, sweet i guess

  • it sounds exactly the same live, if not better

  • i love this band.

  • awesome band

  • I'm also a dummy for missing this show.

  • Comment removed

  • I'm a dummy for missing this show - had tickets too.

  • dude's a musical genius

  • LOL

  • seriously. ive seen him live- he knows what he's doing. i heard he went to yale music school.

  • Bjork is going to work with them so I heard

  • I find Dirty Projectors previous albums to be entirely unlistenable, but Rise Above is a fantastic effort. The whole thing is super. This performance is sound as a pound.

  • go back and listen to their old records

  • good job!from paros!!sam that kick asses!

  • good god this is fantastic

  • There's a difference between having no singing skill and heavy use of vocal stylization, although the first time hearing him sing is a little... weird, so I know what you mean.

  • Yeah, the vocalist actually has a lot of skill if you listen to his other stuff. But this song is supposed to be the black flag song written from memory. So he is adding the somewhat up front sounds to replicate their 'singing' which wasn't really singing at all. I dig it though

  • this band kills it live

  • This is refreshing. they dont even go by set measures, seems like the back ups just take their cues from the sporadic singer. sounds almost reggae influenced.

  • its either brilliant or shite .. im not sure which

  • agreed - but there is some good in this song

  • Just discovered this band today and already want to see them live.

  • a put a fresh butterpatty on your mornin cake cock-dweller

  • this would kill punk

  • i can feel his soul

  • word

  • Not my taste. but I won't talk smack about it unlike the other heartless fiends who come here to vent.

    it is good though.

  • I saw then last Saturday at South Seaport here in NYC and it was for FREEEE!!!

  • anyone know the chords?

  • i dont think even he knows what chords he's gonna play. listen to it.

  • Ahhh!!! But that's why it's great. It's one of the few times that it's so cool how faithful to the recording this performance is. It really sounds off the cuff, but it's just, whatever you like, the emotion that's new each time. Damn I love this band.

  • he knows exactly what chords to play. he went to harvard music school if im not mistaken.

  • Yale.

  • ah. i knew it was something prestigious

  • Why so serious?

  • ha nice.. implementing joker talk into everyday life

  • Yeah, I took the catchphrase from the movie and figured it would be of relevance in this context. It just came to me.

  • Dirty Projectors: Much love now and fo' eva!

  • this song is really beautiful

  • Dirty Projectors are completely amazing live.

  • GaryCancer, that's the funniest thing I've read all day. Thank you!

  • this is so good.

  • i was at this show, my first time hearing them, having never heard any previous recordings -- i was blown away. blown away like i used to be in high school going to see fishbone or any of the bands that blew me away back then. it's been a long time since a live performance has left me that astounded.

  • exactly

  • I saw the dirty projectors live - oh my god! How poorly can you possibly play? the singing was completely off, the guitars a nightmare and it just sounded awful!!!!

    You really messed up!

  • he put every note he played exactly where he wanted it, it's just that often he didn't want it where you'd expect it to be. he's cool like that.

  • I think its more of a style than sloppy-ness. These are some of the one time privileges people get in a live performance. Bands alter song parts to make it more personal rather than replicating the album track version. DP is known for its underground/indie style that is more loose and unique than mainstream performers.

  • absolutely!

  • are you sure your a dirty projectors fan hernonnymoose

  • It's possible to criticise a band's live performance and still enjoy them on record y'know. Though I wouldn't go so far as to say fan, but I really love what i've heard of Rise Above (the album, not the track), and keep meaning to get more into them. One of the things I enjoy most is how precise the whole thing is, even with all the sudden changes in dynamic, time sig, blah blah blah, which makes this sloppy performance all the more disappointing.

  • Rise Above We're Gonna Rise Above

  • Such a brilliant cover.

  • You sir, are fucking stupid.

  • even dumber

  • if you listened to music other then the 10 second clips of videos they play after VH1 shows, maybe you'd see that these are all extremely talented individuals doing something innovative.

  • Maybe if you knew more about music or were more open minded (these things are related), you'd enjoy it.

  • Maybe if you knew more about music you'd see that this trendy tool is too incompetent to even tune his guitar...

  • Are you serious? It's obviously purposeful that he's doing that. It jars the listener. If you don't like it, don't listen to it, but don't judge it like it's unintentional. And "fashion sense"? That has so very, very little to do with anything about this band.

  • I love you

  • cool!
