okay i have a problem... so i was using my jailbroken iphone for 2 weeks and all of a sudden one day i accidentaly pressed the google earth app. the next day at&t called and said that they noticed i activated it and they charged me 50 bucks for internet acess on the iphone. so today i was looking through my settings and noticed that the 3g was on and so was the data roaming . is that how they were able to see that the iphone was on?. i turned both off now.. is it safe to use as a phone again?

I used to have a Blackberry without a data plan but iPhones leak data even when turned off-hence I imagine why companies want you to be on a data plan. I have a second iPHone i dont really use but i called Rogers in Toronto last week and applied the iPHone to a pay as you go account but i had them turn off the data so even if i hit the browser by mistake, I wont get any data leaked.

the new mandatory data plan requirement for smartphones seems to be across the board on all the major carriers. that has fcc complaint written all over it. i used my old tilt for wi-fi all the time, as well as syncing data with my computer. i needed a new phone and found this new rule out, and now am stuck without a smartphone, as i refuse to cave in. their statement on why is ridiculous..to better catter to the customer and have a reliable and predictable bill...haaa what a joke

I can use my iphone 3g with t mobile without paying for data and they won't require it trust me I have several friends who are and have been doing the same thing for several months now and up to this day with the new "rule with smartphone" it still hasnt applied to them so well see

I called at&t and asked them if i could switch from an at&t tilt2 back to a regular phone and get the data plan off my bill. They told me they could do taht but if i put my sim card back in the tilt then there system would catch it. Do you know if theyre system can actually detect that? Or are they feeding me full of crap

nope they are right. Ur tilt or any other smart phone has this IMEI number which quickly detonates like a bomb and sends a signal to ATT as soon as u out that sim card in there. No joke try it out and you'll see first week u do it u will start getting TEXTS and emails saying this phone requires data. To this day im trying to figure out someway around it n there are some options but who knows if they'll work

The consumer is the law. If you don't like it, don't buy it. I remember when a telephone plan cost 12 to 15 dollars a month. That we accepted paying 50 plus a month for a mobile plan was already absurd. NOW they want to push it further. The greed has gone too far ... In THIS economy no less. Boycott. They can detect any smart phone you're using through signals your sim card sends the company. And if they do, you won't receive letters telling you to buy one, they'll be sending you bills saying they signed you up for it themselves. Since it's the policy they have every right to do that. And if you don't pay the bills you get into trouble.
