i would love to see one of the early sisters line ups reform, i realy miss those drum machine guitar bands like 'march violets' 'big black' three johns'cocteu twins - press play with no arguments, fills in the right place, perfect crisp hard as fuck sound and a million times easier to record with.
It's an E-Bow. You can see it clearly at 4:20. They cost about $100 and they are cool as hell. Your strumming hand simply holds the E-Bow over the strings and you get a sppoky, endless sustain.
Doktor Avalnche, Gary Marx, Andrew Eldritch, Craig Adams and Ben Gunn....one of the best bands ever....someone get onto them to put the original line up back together
Whistle Test got some of the best live performances out of these bands back then....This one for sure and also Severina from the Mish a year or so later....must have been kewl to play that show knowing all the while going in that you were going to sound great..Props to Gary Marx here for flawless Ebow playing. I use one and it isnt as easy at it looks to keep the sustain constant in a live setting but he does a great job here...now how about that original members reunion tour in 2010-2011!!
ego and drugs capsized the group; gary marx your haunting guitar made the sisters come to life, w. hussey did ok to carry it through for another year but after s.o.m sounded too much like a metal hair band. i enjoyed it while it lasted. sisters 4ever
Eldritch and Gary Marx have both gone on record saying that Craig Adam's bass sound was one of, if not, the defining sounds of The Sisters of Mercy. I tend to agree, the bass on both Floodland and Vision Thing just wasn't up to scratch - probably because Eldritch wrote and mostly recorded the parts.
They had a drummer but he drank a special shrinking mixture and went inside a metal box and renamed himself as Doktor Avalanche ... emulating his hero "Echo" of Bunnymen fame who came to a similar fate ;-(
@wibeseeker Actually I thought the drum track was too regular and almost totally without dynamics. Any real drummer would also note the lack of cymbal crashes at key points in the song. Probably the weakest sound in the track is the hi hat. A real drummer changes the pressure on the hi hat pedal so that every note has just the right tone ,volume and sustain. This hi hat track is just plain lifeless and dull. I like the song however even with boring drum track.
I saw these guys at Cheyne Park in Detroit, MI. in 1991. (I live in Australia) We met some girls in the car park and ended up back stage. I however, lost in the alcoholic moment, whilst in in the bandroom, spent some time driving the porcelaine bus.........all the way from drunken bastard AUSTRALIA it seems!!!!
this has to be the Sisters at their peak - remember seeing this on OGWT and it totally blew me away ? Have you got the other track First & Last & Always from it ?
I actually have this and FALAA from this recording on Vinyl somewhere
He looks so cute at 2:00 - 2:22 in his little hat (looks little because he's far away) and he looks so small and he is doing that adorable thing with his shoulders. I don't mean to sound patronizing or anything, I just really think he looks adorable there.
Mmmmmm not many people can sing with such emotion.
The 80's was the last decade of really decent and innovative music.
Sisters Of Mercy took all the dodgy haircuts and gay clothes and made it cool... in a dark and sombre way.
Ah yes them were the days.
Spent many nights laying in the dark listening to this album thinking "The world really is coming to and end" (But in a happy way, if that makes sense...)
I don't entirely agree with that, theres been some very decent 90's music. The 2000's have had their occasional spurt of good innovative music, unfortuantly nowadays, even 'alternate' is cool so everythings mass marketed. :/
Maybe you just haven't been bothered to find anything decent and innovative now, and find it hard to get out of your old grooves, like most people who get transfixed on the music of a certain period in their life.
Look, I don't mean that there's NO decent music these days - or innovative for that matter.
What I meant was that up until the 80's (and indeed early 90's) there seemed to be more - how shall I say.... playfulness and experimenting with different styles and sounds. And indeed images.
But honestly - when was the last time you heard something that made you go "Wow! never heard anything like this before"?
I'm living in Australia at the moment and over here almost all new (australian) music that's come out over the 6 years that I have been here sounds just like the early 90's grunge.
I'm 33 years old and started collecting music when I was about 5 or 6, and have a rather large and varied collection of all kinds of music, along with about 600 trance, techno and hard house vinyls plus I make my own electronic music.
So no - I'm not transfixed on a certain period... :)
C'mon. You and I both know that despite your large collection of music, there's still a lot of music out there in this world that you haven't explored. Maybe you should try some Chinese pop for a change. Like spend a few years getting really into it, building up a collection. Trance, techno, goth. All music made for young caucasians. Time to break the mold.
yeah the first album was best, i loved the old school goth outfit and the music, it's a shame he went technoey in floodland and indy/rock in vision thing, i mean, those albums are okay, but it'll never beat first and last and always
I think it was more a case of Eldritch TOLD everyone to leave rather than everyone left....
It was, after all, "his" band, or shall I say his project, and the others were just invited along for the ride until he decided that he didn't need them anymore....
ditto the last comment except the girlfriends mother taped over it with an episode of emmerdale farm-she was dumped. reckon they played two tracks, this and first last and always.great to see this again.
I can't believe I have found this video! My friends and I recorded this show back in 1985 and we used to play it while we were getting ready to go out to our local Goth club! I never thought I'd see it again. What wonderful memories!!!

Visseljarda hit it on the head when he/she said that not many people has the same emotion as Andrew Eldritch.

He almost sounds disgusted by his own words in some strange way.

And dont' forget that they only put out something like 3 studio albums.
