  • Tune in,Turn on,Burn out

  • Maybe they all held microphone like that,

    Mental comparrison.

Iggy pop deginately doesnt sing like this.

    It's great all of it.

Oh, and Alice , what a track.

Wayne hussy on the other hand was a wet waste of time, no matter how he held the mic.

  • peter murphy and andrew eldritch are by far 2 of my favorite singers, they both have deep voices but dont sound anything alike to me

  • Brain Gunn is sexy

  • Real classic - thax

  • Fabulous ! X

  • Great stuff! My fave song of the Sisters! Thanks for sharing!

  • god you get some bad musos on here . just enjoy a brilliant song with the classic line up. with von eldritch yeahhhh

  • so good to see this again I think that eldritch misses gary marx more than hussey

  • sound qaulity sucks ass

  • long live the drum machine!

  • i would love to see one of the early sisters line ups reform, i realy miss those drum machine guitar bands like 'march violets' 'big black' three johns'cocteu twins - press play with no arguments, fills in the right place, perfect crisp hard as fuck sound and a million times easier to record with.

  • I have to know what kind of effects the guitar uses, it sounds like a fucking synth.

  • @twilightkinko

It's an E-Bow. You can see it clearly at 4:20. They cost about $100 and they are cool as hell. Your strumming hand simply holds the E-Bow over the strings and you get a sppoky, endless sustain.

  • @PrincePurple awesome, thanks. Might just have to invest in one of those.

  • Man,ich höre Sisters nun schon seid fast 20Jahren. Aber bei dem Song habe ich immer noch eine Gänsehaut.

  • Doktor Avalnche, Gary Marx, Andrew Eldritch, Craig Adams and Ben Gunn....one of the best bands ever....someone get onto them to put the original line up back together

  • @SidFletcher73 i heard doktor avalanche is in re-hab...he's in bad shape....

  • this will always be the best ...

  • ebow

  • Whistle Test got some of the best live performances out of these bands back then....This one for sure and also Severina from the Mish a year or so later....must have been kewl to play that show knowing all the while going in that you were going to sound great..Props to Gary Marx here for flawless Ebow playing. I use one and it isnt as easy at it looks to keep the sustain constant in a live setting but he does a great job here...now how about that original members reunion tour in 2010-2011!!

  • ego and drugs capsized the group; gary marx your haunting guitar made the sisters come to life, w. hussey did ok to carry it through for another year but after s.o.m sounded too much like a metal hair band. i enjoyed it while it lasted. sisters 4ever

  • Exceptional.

How we miss this kind of music right now.

    Totally great.Unique.

  • the complete band

  • ANDREW ELDRITCH IS T H E GOD!

  • 1984 original with marx , hussey & adams

  • Marian rządzisz :P

  • Eldritch and Gary Marx have both gone on record saying that Craig Adam's bass sound was one of, if not, the defining sounds of The Sisters of Mercy. I tend to agree, the bass on both Floodland and Vision Thing just wasn't up to scratch - probably because Eldritch wrote and mostly recorded the parts.

  • @aboilost I know he always used a guitar amp not a bass amp to get that sound : )

  • god, eldritch was the coolest boy there ever was....

  • In a word brilliant

  • The Best Sisters Line up ever!!!!

    Fucking Awesome

  • They had a drummer but he drank a special shrinking mixture and went inside a metal box and renamed himself as Doktor Avalanche ... emulating his hero "Echo" of Bunnymen fame who came to a similar fate ;-(

  • I think this stupid drum machine kills The Sisters' sound. They should had always had alive drummer and sound more dynamic...

  • nonsense. the drum machine added to their icy, detached, gothic sound. much better than a human drummer.

  • @wibeseeker Actually I thought the drum track was too regular and almost totally without dynamics. Any real drummer would also note the lack of cymbal crashes at key points in the song. Probably the weakest sound in the track is the hi hat. A real drummer changes the pressure on the hi hat pedal so that every note has just the right tone ,volume and sustain. This hi hat track is just plain lifeless and dull. I like the song however even with boring drum track.

  • Craig Adams bass playing is f****** awesome!!

  • Yes, Gary mentioned in an interview that Craig's playing was a big contribution to their sound. I agree.

  • OMGoth! Freaking awesome! Please post the whole show!!!!

  • excellent guitar base

  • Rise And Reverberate. The Sisters.

  • oh oh ohhh

  • Excellent stuff. Hussey looks almost gay. Actually he looks a lot gay.

  • It was 80-es, god...

  • Mi nombre es Mariana, ahhhhh hasta siento escalofrío

  • this is the real sisters, gary marx and all,not the shite eldritch has been dragging up for years!! Classic!

  • this performance is to die for... andrew = God

he looks pretty adorable in that hat

  • Oh GOOOOOOODDDDDDDDDD

  • I saw these guys at Cheyne Park in Detroit, MI. in 1991. (I live in Australia) We met some girls in the car park and ended up back stage. I however, lost in the alcoholic moment, whilst in in the bandroom, spent some time driving the porcelaine bus.........all the way from drunken bastard AUSTRALIA it seems!!!!

  • This was probably the best version of Marian they ever did. Cor! That takes me back... So long ago.

  • Totally agree with you on that, a real dark eerie but truly beautiful piece of goth/rock or goth/pop. 9/10

  • good old days!

  • Is that Neil Young singing?

  • idiot!

  • My fault, sonny. The pork chops on the side of Neil's face aren't as big as this geezer's.

  • original 1985

  • The great Gary Marx left the band right after this performance.

  • there is nothing like hippy goths.

  • Dont mix your drinks comrade.

  • brilliant

  • What a great tune.

  • I like his hat!!!

  • black magic, folks!

  • this has to be the Sisters at their peak - remember seeing this on OGWT and it totally blew me away ? Have you got the other track First & Last & Always from it ?

I actually have this and FALAA from this recording on Vinyl somewhere

  • I think I've still got it in a box at my Mum's on a betamax video tape along with this song and various other mid-80s stuff...

  • i wish my name were marian

  • Change your name to Marian then - a new life beckons.

  • the best video

    andrew eldritch forever

    thats is a coll man

  • He looks so cute at 2:00 - 2:22 in his little hat (looks little because he's far away) and he looks so small and he is doing that adorable thing with his shoulders. I don't mean to sound patronizing or anything, I just really think he looks adorable there.

  • @herekittykitty34 lol xD

  • if you can see me Marian reach out and take me home

  • You wanna stop disrespecting Von like that?

  • Class, pure class. The four horsemen ride again..........

  • Yea these guys were a huge part of my teenage years.

Visseljarda hit it on the head when he/she said that not many people has the same emotion as Andrew Eldritch.

I don't know many (if any) people who can sing like he can.

He almost sounds disgusted by his own words in some strange way.

    Legendary stuff.

And dont' forget that they only put out something like 3 studio albums.

  • 3 studio albums and like...30 B-sides

Pretty sad that so many SoM fans will never hear their best stuff

    =/

  • Agreed-I used to have a load of their 12"s. Some of the B-Sides were truly inspiring.

Maybe they'll re=release them as an anniversary pkg sometime in the near future?

  • I've taken initiative and upped a ton of there unknown tracks,

check em out on my page!

  • @hairyalien Peter Murphy sings like that, as does David Bowie.

  • @Letranger

    ....and?

  • god i love thissssssssssssssssssssssssssss

  • wow....what a sound^^remember good times:))

  • I keep replaying this. I can't help myself. I am mesmerised and riveted.

  • mesmerizing still

  • the complete band

    the best

  • I love that song!

  • Mmmmmm not many people can sing with such emotion.

The 80's was the last decade of really decent and innovative music.

Sisters Of Mercy took all the dodgy haircuts and gay clothes and made it cool... in a dark and sombre way.

Ah yes them were the days.

Spent many nights laying in the dark listening to this album thinking "The world really is coming to and end" (But in a happy way, if that makes sense...)

  • perfect sense

    purrfect 2

  • I don't entirely agree with that, theres been some very decent 90's music. The 2000's have had their occasional spurt of good innovative music, unfortuantly nowadays, even 'alternate' is cool so everythings mass marketed. :/

  • Maybe you just haven't been bothered to find anything decent and innovative now, and find it hard to get out of your old grooves, like most people who get transfixed on the music of a certain period in their life.

  • Nah not at all.

Look, I don't mean that there's NO decent music these days - or innovative for that matter.

What I meant was that up until the 80's (and indeed early 90's) there seemed to be more - how shall I say.... playfulness and experimenting with different styles and sounds. And indeed images.

But honestly - when was the last time you heard something that made you go "Wow! never heard anything like this before"?

  • I'm living in Australia at the moment and over here almost all new (australian) music that's come out over the 6 years that I have been here sounds just like the early 90's grunge.

I'm 33 years old and started collecting music when I was about 5 or 6, and have a rather large and varied collection of all kinds of music, along with about 600 trance, techno and hard house vinyls plus I make my own electronic music.

So no - I'm not transfixed on a certain period... :)

  • C'mon. You and I both know that despite your large collection of music, there's still a lot of music out there in this world that you haven't explored. Maybe you should try some Chinese pop for a change. Like spend a few years getting really into it, building up a collection. Trance, techno, goth. All music made for young caucasians. Time to break the mold.

  • Chinese pop eh?

Is that what you listen to, and is that what makes you so different?

Throw me some names and I'll look in to it.

  • Sorry. I don't listen to it. Just giving a suggestion. There's a whole world of music out there beyond your massive collection of vinyl.

  • ...damn.. I was really excited when I saw that there was another reply to this thread.

I actually thought you were gonna recommend some chinese pop.

Oh and please. I'm well aware that there's "a whole world of music out there".

If I wasn't I wouldn't have made the comment that started this discussion now, would I?

  • Ha.

There I was thinking that you were actually gonna recommend some chinese pop. Ah well.

Oh and look, I'm well aware of "the whole world of music out there". That's what made me post the initial post starting this discussion.

  • Damn. vs. Ha.

I was really excited vs. There I was thinking

Oh and please vs. Oh and look

    If I wasn't I wouldn't vs. That's what made me

It's fun picking which words we use, isn't it?

  • that's right....the music....that dark wave coming over you

  • sisters.. scotch and amphetamines.. and 12 hr shifts = divorce.. I lived a real goth lifestyle.

Thank fuck I escaped all that.. The music is all that matters.

  • Forever is supposed to be "always"...

  • First and Last and Always was the first goth, last goth and will forever remain goth :*

  • this version of the band was the best, because they really went to shit after this album and everyone but eldritch left.

  • yeah the first album was best, i loved the old school goth outfit and the music, it's a shame he went technoey in floodland and indy/rock in vision thing, i mean, those albums are okay, but it'll never beat first and last and always

  • talktal:

I think it was more a case of Eldritch TOLD everyone to leave rather than everyone left....

It was, after all, "his" band, or shall I say his project, and the others were just invited along for the ride until he decided that he didn't need them anymore....

    But hey - that's showbiz......... ;)

  • My name is Marian, no wait, is Antonio xDDDD

  • I belief in one god, his name is Andrew Eldritch

  • one of the best songs by one of the best bands

    marian :"(

  • Husseys screaming melocholony guitar rifts added another dimension to this song, but its my favourite song ever

  • So glad to come across this!

  • ha. my memory was an eighth of fet, cheap red wine the thursday night down to the KU club in huddersfield. sweeet.

  • My name is marian :D

  • @Pacfangermany ur so lucky :D

  • Their best song, to my opinion. But this is not the best version of it.

  • an eighth of fet, cheap red wine, then friday night down to planet x's in liverpool. top memories, with the sisters intertwined in all. Ben Gunn RIP

  • Super! merci pour partager le tube, j'adore Sisters of Mercy.

  • Absolutely brilliant.... So many memories.

  • Certainly haven't seen this for a while. Wasn't this Gary Marx's last appearance with SOM, certainly in the UK? It all went downhill from here...

  • divine!!

  • Back when Gary Marx was in the band. By far the best era for the Sisters.

  • Amazing, one of my favourites, a great song to get lost in, thanks for posting this...

  • AWESOME THANX!!!

  • Cool! thanks for the video. I had never seen it. the best period of the Sisters of Mercy.

  • ditto the last comment except the girlfriends mother taped over it with an episode of emmerdale farm-she was dumped. reckon they played two tracks, this and first last and always.great to see this again.

  • I can't believe I have found this video! My friends and I recorded this show back in 1985 and we used to play it while we were getting ready to go out to our local Goth club! I never thought I'd see it again. What wonderful memories!!!
