  • I remember this day...8/8/08 was the last day of my summer classes in college and the first day of the summer olympics! Wine nights and Michael Phelps...good times.

  • Does The Puff get puffier if you talk about talking about it? Or talk about talking about talking about it?

  • I'm 14 and that my good sir is a cassette. I even used to own a cassette player but it broke.

  • @antontonybekker me too! Though I'm 15

  • @antontonybekker I am 14 to, I used to listen to cassettes on our now ancient boom box <3 oh the good ol' days

  • @antontonybekker I took it apart to find the cause, kind of like an autopsy. The cause was a few loose rubber bands used to turn and play the cassette, I couldn't replace them though. :(

  • haha, i know what THAT is.

    and i'm 22.

  • my cousin was born 8/8/88 and he is the 8th grandchild on either side of his family.

crazy right? thumbs up if u think so

  • @IMCRAZIER2THEMAX This video was talking about 8/8/08 - the day that I turned 18, because I was born on the 8th day of the 8th month of the year 1998. I just wish that I was an 8th-related grandchild!

  • On 8:08 PM 8/8/08, it was my birthday. :)

  • @iTwilight98 Mine too! Happy (quite belated) birthday!

  • i love the way his suit matches his guitar

  • Hank! Please note that Dan John Miller looks like Spike from Cowboy Bebop.

  • :D What song is that, the one that the guy sings?!

  • the bean was in zombicorns, right?

  • The Bean! Will Grayson Will Grayson PRE-referance! :D

  • Ah, cassettes... my brother and i used to fight over the M&M cassette player we shared, except when we would listen to ABBA together.

    OMG IT'S A TOBIAN!

  • 8/8/08 was my birthday!! :) And you know, I was born around 8:08 at night.

  • Comment removed

  • What's that white rectangular thing?

  • I miss having ways of listening to music that wear out...

  • hey guys

whAts the name of the song?

    its epic.

    lol... super sayan hair :)

  • I try to imagine that there is someone how does not know what a cassette is. I have a hard time imagining that. It feels so weird.

  • I'm pretty young, but I know what a cassette is, don't worry! :D I used to listen to these Disney song cassette tapes in my mom's green minivan when I was little. The green minivan got replaced by a blue minivan a few years ago, though, and so the cassette tapes have been replaced by CDs. Alas, I have yet to buy a CD of Disney songs.

  • I like John's books are best when John reads them.

  • Having seen the Washington Monument many many times, I can agree that "The Bean" definitely pwns it.

  • At that time, 8.08pm at 8/8/08, the opening ceremony started for the Olympics. But that's China time. =P

  • My cousin was born on 8-8-08. Then named him Octavio.

    ^-^

  • @ferngirltlc That's perhaps one of the most fantastic names I've ever heard.

  • Wow, John you have fantastic taste in music. I love this song and I am EXTREMELY picky. Definitely checking out Blanch.

  • What is a Zip Drive?

I kid, But c'mon zip drives are inferior to JAZZ drives who are inferior to DVDs, who are inferior to Blu-Rays (I was "rooting"((or routing)) for HD DVD.) who are inferior to HardDrives who apparantly are inferior to wait for it... TAPE DECKS, Tape decks are still the most reliable form of long term backup... Who the hell thought that would be true back in 1994 when I first heard of them. (I was 10 or 11)

  • Tapes... not decks.. what was i thinking... Why am i still posting this... *shrug*

  • Cassettes are like the best thing ever!!!!

After CD's and mp3 players of course... Yes I know CD's skip and mp3's aren't as good quality, but just show me a cassette player that can fit in my pocket and store thousands of songs... But I still like cassettes. I even have a tape deck somewhere, and a few tapes I used to listen to when I was young (they were dramatized stories of the lives of famous composers and the stories behind their most famous pieces -- how nerdy is that??)

  • @artvandelay13 You are describing nostalgia SNAP OUT OF IT hu-MAN!!

  • I'm still in high school and I use cassette tapes.

  • i love cassette tapes:)

  • omfg are those casset tapes?

  • John, I hate to be a downer, but it was better when you were reading it.

  • He looks kinda like John Linnell

  • kids who haven't heard of cassette tapes??

introduce me to these children so i can kidnap them and force them to listen to my three year of recording This American Life while giving them a long lecture on how much better they are than "cds" or "iTunes"

    pheh

  • if there is seriously someone who doesn't know what a tape is, that makes me feel very old. and very nostalgic. and I'm only 18...

I got a walkman with an elvis tape when I was five. (my mom's old walkman and my dad's tape). I thought it was the coolest thing in the world. :) I still have my VHS too. and I refuse to buy itunes. they are killing cd's

  • *VHS'

  • ...

    I still have cassettes.

    Awesome ones.

Like, Harry Potter and Peter, Paul, and Mary.

  • does anyone know the name of the song? i have so totally fell in love with Blanche!

i have loads of cassettes, most of them audio books. yet i have no clue what a zip drive is... :P

  • pause at 0:55

  • Oh yeah, man. I've been to the bean. xD

  • omg john looks a frighteningly similar to hank when he's wearing those big head phones.

  • GRRRRR! I missed it! *sad panda face*

  • I have wondered for sometime, do authors have any say in who reads their audiobooks? What was the case for you, John?

  • wats with hanks picture flashing at 0:55 ?

  • he was the very special suprise guest

  • 8.8.08 was my 17th!!

  • Dan John Miller should have sung the book!

  • 8 8 08! that was my 13t birthday!

  • Oh, I'm so illiterate. I thought you spelled Blanche like Blanch. Thank God for Google. haha. I found the song at the end, And I am deeply impressed. The Green Brothers are into very GREAT music. Even if it is Japanese (Bubble-Gum?) Pop. haha. Anyone Remember?

  • I tried so many times to stop the video exactly where the Hank picture flashes at 0:55...I finally got it!

  • this was totally made of awesome. =)

  • I love the videos when your head and puff don't fit in the same screen.

  • I love your hair.

  • 8 8 08 at 8:58pm was my 20th BIRTHDAY!!

  • So at 8 8 09 at 8:58, you can buy the wine made of acid, baby tears and pain??? Strawberry Hill!

lol, happy bilated birthday, have fun rockin' out 21 when it comes!

  • "is it some kind of early zip drive" "sort of"

The was the nerdiest part of the dialogue...and the fact that I know what the cassette is and what a zip drive is (and own 2 of them) makes me even nerdier I dare say...

    Peace.

  • Tape cassettes are just amazing, though, to be fair. And fixing them is so simple. :)

  • Also, taking them, opening them, cutting them apart and making your own remix is so much fun!

  • Wow, well, I've never done that before, but nice idea!

  • Dan John Miller is Awesome!

  • Comment 311:

    Must get audiobook.

  • wow i've always wondered how they make audio books

  • Ugh, you guys came to Chicago??

I didn't become a Nerdfighter until October!! If I had been a Nerdfighter, I totally would have gone. I live close enough!

I hope you guys do this again and you come to Chicago!

  • Great performance there, but the kids could not have been less enthused. They appeared to fear for their lives.

  • This video makes me want to cry due to the fact that I could partake in any of the Terminus/John Green festivities when they happened even though I live very near Chicago and it was my birthday during that week! I'm obsessed only a little...

  • the bean is awesome.

it is way better than the washington monument

    which isnt that great...

  • As cool as Dan John Miller is, I still think I'd rather listen to you do the audiobook. At least if I actually listened to audiobooks.

I miss tapes. They were awesome.

  • Dan John Miller looks like a guy I know! And that is one jokes bean.

"I'm gonna kill that guy and take his suit."

  • YAY FOR PUFF LEVELS!

    FIVE AWESOME GUYS FTW!

You got pwnd by a beautiful silver bean. lol

and BTW cassettes are so 90's (and i was born in the 90'slol 94 baby!)

Btw I think Authors should record their audio books

  • I can't wait for Paper Towns!

  • The teen suicide rate went up shortly after that song based on the looks on their faces. They were not overwhelmed by the awesome.

  • You should have Stephen Fry record the British audiobook of Paper Towns, John. Wonderful voice.

  • The Bean is a British design. :D

WHOOP WHOOP! Best architects in the wooorld!

  • cassettes! they're made of old-fashioned awesome!

  • Hahahah you're awesome comments never cease to throw me into a fit of giggles.....in my pants. :)

  • I totally agree with you about the suit! The moment you said his name, I thought, "Dear Lord, he and Tracee Mae Miller are two of the best dressers around!"

  • yes! i love the bean in chicago!!

  • i feel bad for those unknowing of video cassettes....lol =P

  • omg: what was that thing? It was like a rectangle. What was that doing in a recordering place?

Haha I'm just kidding. I still have old cassette tapes. Who doesn't love a bit of Gina G!

Ms Tobian seemed a bit embarassed.. And how did you find out that was her name? x

  • I don't think John had to actually find out. I mean if I had "Tobian" somewhere in my name, I would probably bombard the brothers Green with that fact.

  • omg i cant belive it aaaaaahh i live there

  • My harry potter audiobooks, though on my ipod, are cassettes

  • hooray for cassettes :]

  • yay cassets!! I still use em :P

  • omg that was so freaking awesome!

i love you hank + john!

[that short strange red head with pale skin]

    -rachel

  • =[ I should be there right now.

    haha.

  • It also just hit me that her, me, and my cousin were the ultimate nerdfighting baby trio.

Nerdfighters are definitely born and not grown. :]

  • It's so, so strange to hear you say 'secret sister Rosianna'. We've known each other since we were babies (so she's my longest friend). Hearing you talk about her is very odd indeed. :]

  • is a happy dance awsome and; if not, could there be an awsome dance? Also if happy dances are awsome than could it be possible that when performing a happy dance you are acctually filling the air and O-zone layer with awsome?

  • I me MINE I me MINE I me MINE.

  • tobians are hot.

  • i find it halarious that he says that a young nerdfighter might mistake a cassette for a... i think he said zip drive, and i, being a young nerdfighter, have no idea what a zip drive is but totally uses cassettes... actually i don't, i perfer vinyl

  • My mom's birthday is on 8 8 08 can you say Happy Birthday?

  • I can't wait to go to this!

I was just wondering where in the library this is going to take place...

I've been there before and it's really big and I got lost once before so I don't want it to happen again =]

  • when he is anouncing the special guests, it flashes a pic of john!

  • What's up with Nerdfighters using the wrong Green brother name? =S

    It's Hank in the flash...

  • yay for edittor hard work ^.^

  • actually, more like a win win... win situation.

  • I want... the audiobook... I love.. his voice. and his suit. and your writing

    IT'S A WIN WIN SITUATION

  • John, just because Glen and I didn't know how to insert a floppy disk for our Secret Project doesn't mean that we don't know what a cassette tape is ;) I mean, I used to listen Harry Potter on audio tapes.

  • CAN'T WAIT TO MEET YOU JOHN AND HANK!!

  • I love the bean.

I live in Chicago.. I'm not sure if I'll be making it though D:

  • your hair reminds me of vegeta from dragonball z.

  • Ahh I was in Chicago awhile a go why did I leave!?!?!

  • Yayyy for Blanche!! Now I want the audiobook. hah.

  • Omg, I was just in Chicago for 3 days! Aww, man, now I'm really sad that I couldn't have stayed longer!

Also, I'm completely addicted to audiobooks! I listen to them just about any time I do anything otherwise boring. Cleaning, doing laundy, doing dishes, driving, grocery shopping, etc etc etc. I pretty much listen to them all the freaking time, hehe.

  • dont worry hair. the awesome wont hurt you. you're a part of it!

i like the audiobooks guy. he was a good choice.

  • Registered! Got in! I was so excited when I got the e-mail saying I'd done it on time.

  • Is the Toronto gathering the "official" 888 gathering, or is it just the one that is the most talked about on youtube?

  • Yay for Chicago!! I love chicago, mostly because I live there. I wish I could be there for the awesomeness... maybe the wind will waft some extra awesomeness over in my direction. Have fun!

    ~best wishes

  • Must.. own.. suit.

  • How can one not know what a cassette tape is? Everyones parent(s) has/have at least one.

  • I wish I was going to Terminus SOOOOOOOO bad. A lot of my friends are going. It's a tad painful not to be there.

  • 0:54 =o

  • I would like to come but I can't. :( Even though Chicago is only a 45 minute train ride for me, I don't think I would be able to get out of work. D=

  • Much awesome!

  • "I'm going to kill that guy and take his suit." Oh my gosh. Actually, that's the first thing I noticed about him in the video too and even though I'm a girl, I would have done the same thing.

OH, and I'm pissed because you people aren't ever in Orange County. My brother gets married on 8.8.08 so I don't think it matters, they wouldn't be happy if I ditched the wedding for you guys.

  • People living in CHICAGO!!!

Never heard of that bean before (being european), googled it, and now ALL i want is a postcard of the bean. Anyone would care to send me one? I would try and send a cool one from here in return. (Though gotta say, no beans here...) Anyone?

  • I live in chicago and totally wouldn't mind sending a postcard

  • Me too :)

  • Haha me too!

  • I'm gonna be there

  • UGH You finally get to Chicago and I lack the funds to buy a new bus pass to get to Grant Park D: ...and I still have no idea where that giant bean is. Moving to new places and lacking money or knowledge to explore local awesomeness sucks ;-;

  • John, your hair looks SO much better when it's combed and tamed. For an example, refer to the footage of you in the recording studio! Hahaha :)

  • *hahahaha*

I laughed out loud so hardcore when you said, "I'm going to kill that guy and take his suit"

    *hahahaha*

  • Well, I'm gonna have to pick up THREE copies of Paper Towns now; the two different covers and the audio book, 'cause that's just awesome!

Hmm... Chicago, eh? Let me check my schedule...

  • You rock. Keep up the good work boys!

  • Oh my goodness, I wish I could go to Chicago and see you guys! My insides hurt from the knowledge that I can't be there... AHH!

I know Iowa isn't that exciting, but you would increase its levels of awesome 100% if you came here sometime!

  • Awesome! I live in Chicago so I will most definitely be going downtown on 8/8/8. Anyone else going to be there and want to meet up so we don't look awkward standing alone?

Message me on my page? :)

  • haha, oh John, I'm sure if we know what records are, the nerdfighters know what cassette tapes are, lets not underestimate them now! ;D

now I'm off to The Ning

  • I hope to God there aren't people in this world who don't know what a "tape cassette" is. I feel old enough and I'm only 20.

Also my best friend stole my copy of "Looking for Alaska" and read it she says its awesome and intense. I will read it soon, its on my list of books to read. I'm still trying to finish A Sweet Far Thing...(don't tell Libba Bray.)

  • EH i wish i could gooooo!

  • How do Hank and John edit their videos? Like with the intro in this one lol

  • We both use iMovie and nothing else.

    >:[ That's disappointing.

  • Joh is NOT on cocaine.

I LOVE the intro to this :) Way to add some excitement to the intro John!

  • Audiobooks are amazing- I want to go into that business so badly and be the person who tells the story and does the characters' voices!

  • Great video John

I'd love to do audiotyping! lol

  • This guy is on cocaine or something. He is so messed up.

  • Hi John! Thank you so much for coming up to Spring Lake. It was great to hear your reflections on your writing process, and the first chapter of Paper Towns was, unsurprisingly, awesome. Looking forward to your Catcher in the Rye video--in the meantime, we hope you enjoy our video response. Best Wishes!

  • SWEET walk the line FTW.

  • DATE IS WRONG ON EVENTFUL.

Eventful is showing that you guys are coming into Chicago on December 8. It also says August 8. If anyone receives Eventful notices and doesn't read carefully, they will think you're arriving in December.

  • Haha!! The Tobian. That's great.

And I know what a cassette tape is!!

  • When is the audio book accually coming out?

  • Only in America. Where ANYTHING could be pwned by a bean.

  • I'm going to kill that guy and take his suit!

    LMFAO!

excellent video John! E-Mazing. I like your videos better when you are excited about something. It makes me excited!

  • Which of the five awesome guys is gonna be there?
