Sang Mr. Lang's "Again" in CLU choir for him a couple of weeks ago. I was intrigued by what this piece sounded like, since it did win The Pulitzer Prize and a Grammy. His pieces are really beautiful, and really well constructed.
The Grammy nominees are Paul Hillier's Theatre of Voices, who recorded the work for Harmonia Mundi. The New York Virtuoso Singers gave the premier U.S. performance.
This is an amazing group! I think they all have perfect pitch. I found the full live broadcast of this piece on WNYC which also included Ligeti's 'Lux Aeterna'. Clearly masters at work here-and some cute guys to boot ;-)
I'm the tenor singing "come, come" and the notes are written out in a repeating pattern, but David Lang said strict rhythm was not necessary. The score says "breathe as needed - sing as long as you can and exaggerate slightly the struggle for air when you run out and reenter."

Cool! I just saw Hilary Hahn interview Mr. Lang, and wanted to hear one of his pieces. I'm glad I got to hear this! :)

The rhythm sounds very complex. Is the person saying "come" repeatedly doing so in a particular rhythm or is that ad libitum?

a particular rhythm with some freedom allowed
