Will everyone stop bickering LOL. A CAI alone will get you 0-5 horsepower nothing noticeable.. a meaner sound, and can actually DROP the engine temp. which is more important then 5 horsepower.. SECOND! If your smart you'd realise sticking a 300$ intake on there wont do much shit. When your stock exhaust manifold still has more back pressure then your sucking in now. NOW, if you cam it, stroke it, put some headers and an CAI. THEN you will gain some major power. It works. if you do it right.
I bought one cause I thought Id be getting better performance and MPG. Honda tech told me the stock is made to suck in cold air and is more expensive to use then the design most "performance" intakes use. Kinda makes sense if you compare, I think the extra noise makes people think their getting something, but tcheck out the dyna tests
3. using less restrictive filters (like K&N) does decrease the lifespan of engine itself by allowing bigger particles (like metal dust) to pass through the filter and scar the cylinder wall
1. the only purpose of the factory box is to prevent the engine from sucking in hot air from the engine bay itself. that is why most factory box nowadays tend to curve to an open space and have an opening underneath it
2. K&N filters does increase horsepower by using a less restrictive sponge-like material as compared to paper. this has been tested repeated on dyno
you'd be supprised, in a standard intake system the air filter itself is the least restrictive part,
Paper is the best filtation medium on the mass market for cars, better than cotton or foam, if you buy a drop in aftermarket airfilter for you standard system you will gain 0hp and 0 torque across the whole rev range.
the reason why these kits gain power is because the pipework gets changed.
Actually some of what urbex says is true. the bit about them ruing mafs' is true. but only after people clean them and then reoil them. But I personally KNOW FOR A FACT that K&N filters when used properly add horsepower. I have dynoed my Busa with stock air filter and then K&N and the K&N adds power, Not much, but it is better then stock.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Now you will be safe in the knowledge you have fitted a SMALLER surface area of what K&N claim incorrectly to be a "filter". It has bigger holes, you can see daylight through a K&N. They DO NOT FILTER to the standard required by modern engines and will look like you have shotblasted the engine and turbo on new cars. They add *NO* extra power to ANY engine. They decrease performance by doing away with the original airbox - deisgned for max air speed&flow&pressure. LEARN ABOUT CARS & ENGINES!
@urbex2007 You need to learn, see my above comment about MAF's you clearly do not have a clue. They can increase performance if used correctly, Cold air intakes (CAI) reduce the intake temp. Cold air is denser and therefore produces more power for a load of reasons. Also many cars are remapped and alot of stock intakes will not provide enough flow. I had a Golf GTI turbo with a remap, so I went from 12psi to 22psi peak boost. Do you think the stock air box would suffice?
@urbex2007 you know absolutely nothing about cars do you???!! it´s a milliondollar industry so don´t you think they do ALOT of research just to call it a performancefilter?... Dumass...
@urbex2007 this is right and wrong. It can be used correctly and filter just fine while increasing air flow. If not used correctly, meaning not cleaning it every few weeks, u can screw your engine. That and if water gets near it, you are fucked.. I'd keep the stock intake lol.
Old comment I know. I just bought one actually and it comes with a dyno sheet that shows the car they tested it with. For my 2000 civic EX it adds 5.33 HP. Not bad for just a intake!
No it is not true - it's to sell a product. Lie to a boy racer and they pay whatever you ask. The original airbox is that design for a reason, a paper element does not restrict flow of FILTERED air as it is many times the surface area of a K&N if you unfold them. The K&N DOES NOT FILTER air to the required standard and the oil on them ruins MAF sensors. They are over rated and people who paid loads will lie to say they are great to stop themselves looking silly. Original=more power,K&N=rubbish.
thats pretty stupid seing how most stock air boxes are resprictive with the extra bends and compartments, ive tested on the dyno, and proven stock is shit and aftermarket is better, used k&N on all my vehicles and has proven benificial and works the best on trucks
@urbex2007 K&N did a test with the oil they use on the filters and dipped a MAF in it and it did not causes any bad effects. Alot of MAF sensors have a burn off cycle where the element is heated when the engine is switched off to burn off any crap thats on there, search MAF burn off cycle and you will see.
I put in a drop-in k&n panel into my pos cavalier and noticed a slight change in throttle response. Generally an engine with higher displacement, such as 6 or 8 cylinder cars will benfit more with air intake systems than a four- banger
I put in a Short ram into my other 4-banger car and noticed the engine roared louder, and I got a bit better mileage, whereas I didn't notice better mileage with the K&N drop-in panel on th same car
This is true..... However all a cold air intake does is bring air in from in front of the radiator....Hens the cold air :) As a result this air will be cooler then the stock intake which is cold air as well but is more constricting.
No i think the main function of a cold air intake is that the pipe is streamlined compared to the shitty rubber hose and the restrictive air box that almost eliminates the noise and the intake is more free to suck in air faster with restriction you get a better responsive engine and will help a bit at higher rpm's
No..theory behind cold air intake is that it sucks in colder, denser air outside the heated engine compartment, such as air from the tirewell. Since their is more air per cubic foot in cold air than in warmer air, you get a more potent mixture of oxygen into the combustion chamber, and thus a more powerful explosion. A short ram intake is less restrictive than the stock airbox,so it will give a slight gain over stock, but not as much as CAI, and being made of aluminum, it heats up.
the throttle body Coolant Control Valve (CCV). The CCV allows you to selectively heat (or not heat) the plenum assembly. With local weather temperatures below 55°F the valve is left open. In warmer weather the valve can be closed for maximum thermal benefits. and this drops the air temp, so if this is on you never get cold air into the plenum, completely voids a cold air intake.

engine coolant heats plenum, plenem heat, heats air, so unless you disable the plenum heating, having a cold air intake is pointless.

Well in my opinion the typhoon has less restriction and allows for cold air to enter the engine with out having to worry about water getting in.
jeb496 3 years ago
is not about water...they just tell me the car take more HP with panel..typhoon at low RPM is weak..they told me!!!

great change! hell of a mean sound.

Just so you know it is a cold air intake because its drawing the air from front of the car before the radiator.
jeb496 3 years ago
i could not tell a diff,
but... I know for a fact all that so called cold air intake is bull shit anyway.
only way to get cooler air is to block the coolant going threw the intake. ideots. all falling for the marketing scams lol.
mjs1231 3 years ago
holly shit. your the dumbest mother fucker i know. block the coolant. do that to your car and see what happens to your recoil pinnons dipshit.
