Today's rally cars, by the rules of the sport, are restricted to 300hp but they have like 600ft-lbs of torque. They also have to run a 2.0 liter engine. If there were no regulations they could easily pump out 600hp.
What i have noticed is that when they drive a 4wd Gp B car in very sharp corners they doesnt use the handbrake, instead they drive the car to the edge of the road to get around theese corners, why?
well i know very very much about theese cars but thats a thing that have made me confused.
@mustachos1993 Actually, Ferrari proposed the 288 gto evoluzione as their car for group b, but they never really entered, Porsche did entered group B with the 959
@roush26 almost 3 people died more than 30 injured, just in portugal 86, after that Henry Toivonen(Lancia Driver) died in a fatal crash in Corcega France the same year.
Years ago in Oklahoma City I followed one of those Renaults and a Porsche 930 squareing off. They were going at it from 100mph roll on's. Even with a 455 Pontiac they'd leave me like nothing. 150mph plus down the Broadway Extension. From Edmond to downtown OKC. Savoring the sounds of boost the whole way. Now that was a ride!
THESE CARS WERE NO DOUBT FOR MEN Rallies FOR NERVES OF STEEL AND REAL MACHINES Engineers! cars are now playing for boys mom who agree with the breakfast served in bed!
These kind of races should have pre-made ready tracks with watchtowers for the fans, that way the fans would have been out of harms way the whole time, nobody would get run over, and well...i must say, the spectators with be getting ALOT better view comapared to possibly being a sitting duck to a speedster.
If i had the power to bring Group B back, i would. But it would need alot of funding, and some daring drivers.
accidents happen in racing, you will never make motorsports safe.
bring back the madness. not this hour long shite thats shown on dave for an hour on a sunday afternoon that no one needs to watch because everyone will know who will have already won... for the 145th time in a row.
chassis design and engine design has not evolved that much since group B. Materials have, It all comes down to handling and Suspesion technology these days. Upgrade old group B cars with the latest suspension tech and they make todays rally spec cars look like matchboxes. Give the same manufacturers the free hand today like they had with group B and the result will blow away Group B cars apart from the sound and looks most modern day cars and engines look and sound like crap compared to this

For me people like Walter Rohrl and Henry Toivonen are extremely brave and crazy who are blessed with the skill to handle the savage widowmakers with 600 horses from the Group B
i think 1:59 answers the question of weather it should come back or not but if you could control crowds then up the power with todays suspension ect and the interest would go through the roof. wrc a bit tame im afraid.
B cars were dangerous because their bodyworks were light and weak and safety was the last problem for constructors. Everybody says that fire killed Toivonen but his car`s frame was also so thrashed due the accident that was hard to believe he survived in it.
@marguslagle It could have been the heat that distorted the frame? After all, the fire was so intense it melted the engine block. However, they were weak, that is not in doubt.
They should bring back Gr.B. Even now with the lower power and better technology, there are still as many accidents and fatalities. I would love to see a 1985 Delta S4 in full power conffguration slaughter all the current WRC cars.
@boosra i agree, they certainly are fast cars, but peoples sense of realism gets clouded with nostalgia
it never ceases to amaze me how anyone can give the s4 at estoril myth any time what so ever.a quick view of mansell qualifying in 86 will bring that home to the doubters.
i saw gpb's at chatsworth and i thought fook they quick.then an e stobart wrc focus took off and it was a differant level altogether.
i also like how you research rather than just believe everything :-) thumbs up
Ah, you are right of course, much nonsense is said about Group B cars - about beating F1 cars and fantasy BHP estimates and whatnot.
I felt the need to dig through the old stats though, cos It seems people are slipping too far in the opposite direction. The "slowly sideways" cars we see at Chatsworth etc perform nowhere near their '80's prime, not even in the ball park.
I guess the truth, as with most things, is somewhere between the two extremes. Cheers! :)
Yet another video showing how crap WRC today is compared to Group B. Group B may have been replaced by Group S had it not been banned, but the lack of night stages and long rallies like the early Group B rallies make WRC today look like child's play to me. Group B drivers are legends for a reason, todays WRC drivers are nowhere near as good.
i sorry to tell you that group s have the same rules as the wrc cars nowadays so we would have still lost the group b rally cars Either way, group s rally cars were ristricted to 300 hp but had lower weight limits than wrc cars today but every thing Else is the same, any way you speak words of gold
Please, if there is god, Bring back Group B! Release these Monstrous Beasts once again!!! What if it was little deadly? if you dont want to die, dont participate/watch beside from the track....watch it from TV......my opinion
Well, in fairness, group B was not hugely more lethal than the years following its demise.
If effort was put into proper crowd control, and certain sensible precautions were taken with stage design, it would be entirely practical to bring back Group B. Overnight, Rally would enter another golden age, this time without all those suicidal Mediterranean youngsters standing in the middle of the road.
Top level motorsport needs almost no restrictions on cars. Restrict everything else.
wrc=world rally car. group b cars were world champion cars at 80´s so basically they are wrc. todays wrc cars like citroen c4, ford focus base to groub A. but anyway i don't like that group b cars will be sayd to wrc thats not right i think and i like to call them to grou b cars.
GROUB B CARS WERE THE WRC CARS OF THE 80's. Goup B was the specifications that they were built under, like Group N for the Asia Pacific series or as M1kk0saatana stated the current WRC cars run under Group A spec

You know how long a rally is? They could never keep the crowd away for the whole stages through. In todays rallys its the same, but today its not that popular anymore. Because of the FIA, and the lack of competition between the teams. BECAUSE OF THE FIA (imo)!
The right question would be: Why are they staying on the track?
80's + euphoric people + not much brain + sound + speed + the fucking atmosphere.. need more?
I was born in the 90's so I could not have known. I have never been to a rally, either, so that is why I asked. I thought maybe they had like crossed lines at the most crowded areas or something.
And sure, if you want to tell me more, I would be only happy.

admittedly the old group b are far more entertaining to listen to and watch.nothing sounds like a quattro in a forest
markandrach 1 year ago
@evilintel im affraid a modern wrc would actually desroy the times of a group b car
there are even some rather stupid people who think an s4 is as quick as an f1 car
markandrach 3 months ago
@markandrach
Well, everybody who knows what they are talking about says that, but it is not strictly true.
The times on the few apparently untouched stages from the '80's are much the same:
Sweden 1986
SS4 Rammen - 21.70 km - Salonen, Timo - 11:22 - 114.55 km/h
Sweden 2011
SS19 - Rammen - 22.76km - Hirvonen, Mikko - 11:55 - 114.55 km/h
There are some where the WRC destroys the group B's, (bendy ones presumably ), but a couple where group b wins, and most are quite close.
