Article 1, Section 10, Paragraph 1, in the
Constitution states that "No state shall enter into any treaty, alliance, or
confederation." The Constitution also
states " No state can keep an army or ships of war during any time of peace, or
engage in war." The Southern states violated this. Regardless of what you believe ideologically, the Constitution regards secession as illegal.
