  • My uncle left Beer in Devonshire to join this fleet which was owned by his great uncle Captain James Leyman who was also a man from Beer. I would welcome any authenticated information about this fleet and especially any information about Captain James Leyman

  • The Gamecock fleet were the ones who were attacked by the Russian navy in 1904 when they were mistaken for Japanese warships. How??!

    My Grandfather was involved in that action. He told my Dad (also later a Skipper) that the Russians were spooked by a flare being fired off by one of the English boats, apparently to signal the trawlers to come around on their track in unison. My Grandfather unfortunately perished shortly after WW1 when his trawler , The 'Amber' of Hull hit a stray sea mine.
