@MsAmbrosia29 Mikey would have been safe in the sanctuary. Until the cops came looking for him for murder and he murdered one of them. The cops would have arrested him at the place on holy ground too. Duncan and Richie couldn't let Mikey go to jail for murder and they couldn't run from the cops with him either. It's a shitty choice but it may have been the best one.
@KWALL69 Of Mice and Men. That's what it's like, and so it kind of honks me off when Adrian Paul compared the character of Silas in the Horsemen episodes to Lenny from Mice and Men, no, that's Mikey here, you can note they both have the same problem of breaking people's necks to shut them up.
@rascalMatt I agree with you in that this is a balatant lift out of 'Of Mice and Men' but you're wrong about the imortals not gettingsick thing. In the episode in the last series where he explains imortality to the doctor he tells her that he can get sick but he can't die from it, therefore a non life threatening mental disability would be possible.
what the hell??? shouldn't immortals have no disease? or never be with any medical conditions? what is this? the innocent man shouldn/t haave had mental problems since his brain will regenerate if he;s immortal
so, somebody (an immortal) with polio disease, who has one leg smaller than the other can;t heal from it? or somebody with seizures or epilepsy? they are diseases or disorders, so they must heal from it... unless of course, they got it pre-immortal
Yes, because handicapped people should NEVER be shown in a positive light on t.v. They should all be locked away so you don't have look at them or deal with their problems, right?
@SirenWasHere Handicapped people can be shown in a positive light. Of course. Who's saying they can't ? Clearly what i'm saying is that it doesn't seem to make any sense for an immortal to be retarded since they can't get sick etc. Therefore it makes no sense and besides the story is a rip off of "Of Mice and Men". That means it's not even original and a lazy attempt at a story line. Don't put words into peoples mouths darling. It makes you look uneducated.
@wchezem None of your drivle makes any sense. I work in the medical field and serve people who need serious help every single day. Not to mention i served my country in special operations. I'm also disabled myself, following two gunshot wounds overseas so of course i have an understanding of and a great compassion for people with special needs.
@wchezem I'm not a big believer in politically correct terminology. Retard has for a long time been the way to label someone who's mentally challenged. It's people like you who read into it by thinking it has a negative connotation. Since when have you EVER seen an immortal get sick????? NEVER HAPPENS !!!! They can be poisoned and die slowly or even starve to death. Perhaps they can get sick but they show has never shown that happen.
Richie, tried so hard to keep Mikey safe...The look on Richie's(when he put his hand on his face) face when Mikey put his head on the tracks was so real.
Mikey Bellow was both well acted and well writen. It was done with respect and accuracy, although maybe a little too Rain Man (not all developmently disabled people are like him, mind you, it runs the spectrum) the only stupid thing was him killing her in the begining. It was stupid, wrong, and too fucking Of Mice And Men
Mikey Bellow was both well acted and well writen. It was done with respect and accuracy (not all developmently disabled people are like him, mind you, it runs the spectrum) the only stupid thing was him killing her in the begining. It was stupid, wrong, and too fucking Of Mice And Men
this episode mad me cry, my husband had a cousin who had turrets and she was walking on the railroad tracks behind her house fell and passed out. Needless to say she was run over. Brings backs tears for her along with the story line.
To bad Darius was not still alive. I am sure that he could have found Mikey a place that he would have been safe(AKA holy ground) and taken care of. All in all a very sad episode. And what about the monastery that Duncan put his friend from the episode "The Beast Below". That would work out great b/c they already know about Immortals.
@abis0077 I agree. I was thinking about Brother Paul & his monastery, but he was killed by Kalas. And poor Darius was murdered by Horten & the Hunter/Watchers. It does not pay to be religious on Highlander!
Earlier I was thinking, "why not just send Mikey to the care of one of the immortal monks at that monestary?". They might as well have just let that evil immortal take his head.
@adzdub I think they would call that Survival of the Fittest. You may not like it, but in a world where Survival means the ability to think quickly, Mikey's a sitting duck without protection. Humanism fits into that picture as much as the planet Zeist. (See Highlander 2)
Of course it is survival of the fittest.Thats life.Do we really live in a world, were having wit, to dodge the dangers that come at us from friend/foe, the real merit and justification of our existence. I would have thought we could think past that. Has that not really been what we strive towards? This is a show. Not real life. When I said "thats a hell of a statement" I meant that apparently even in our imagination we can't even conceive of the possibility that existence alone has its merit.
@adzdub You would have thought... Well that's really nice that you have as great an idealistic view of the world as you do. Yes, it's a TV show, so let's break down what we saw in this episode. You saw an Immortal whose mental capacity isn't in a normal state, you saw another Immortal and his wife taking care of him, and you saw them both die. One from another Immortal, Tyler King, and the other from Mikey himself, the "Of Mice and Men" homage.
@adzdub An Immortal who has no control over his own strength, cannot take care of himself, and whom if taken to a facility to be cared for, might give away the idea of Immortality cannot be taken lightly. He becomes a danger to himself, other people, and to Immortals themselves. At the end of the show, he kills a cop. What if the cops catch him? Put him in prison? See above, he becomes even more of a liability. Essentially, you idealism is a wonderful thing, but not here. More is at stake.
@mayatatyana1 You are very welcome. This episode is one of my favorites of "Highlander: The Series", still to this day, this episode really touched me in a lot of ways.
dammit!!! Man, to me the saddest part was when Richie stepped up to Duncan and said, "I'll do it, he's my responisbility..." specially the part where Mikey was in the tunnel and Richie stopped and took out his sword... dammit!!!
One of my all time favorite episodes of "Highlander: The Series", from Season 4. A very touching episode where Richie Ryan finds Mikey Bellow, a mentally challenged Immortal who Richie takes in. This episode does have a lot of heart, but a very sad ending. This episode made me cry at the end.
This episode reminded me of "Of Mine and Men". I felt for Mikey, sad that that Tyler King, the Immortal trying to take Mikey's head wanted to do that cause he was different and sad that Alan Wells, the Immortal protecting Mikey and his mortal wife, Helen, died.
