IT's actually not that bad, you just have to anticipate them really focus on the ship and then take out the soldiers when they get really close it took me a few tries on hero mode. If you're doing it on hero mode you have to take out the first group with dark jak I had to.

Well, I really don't know. This is a lot about your aiming skills, nothing more. You can't dodge or anything fancy, just shoot, so...
I think the only things that help are: If you hit directly at the shot the smaller fly-thingies shoot, it disappears and doesn't hit you, and if you keep shooting nothing, you run out of energy and have to wait for it to reload again, so don't waste it.

If you use the "square - x" move as dark jak you will kill the first guards before entering the cannon. Now you only have the last 40 guards to kill.
Stand to the left of the cannon for best results, and save the game with dark jak loaded as you still might need a couple of tries.

no hero is a murder. I mean it just butt rapes you. if you are too slow to kill one guard, they just come piling at you. think of a trench in WWI.
