There is no hell in Tolkien's books and the only semblance of afterlife are the Halls of Mandos.
The Void is supposedly the vast emptiness or the "outside" of Arda. Eru crated Arda IN the void. It is a realm of darkness and emptiness but only because there is nothing there. There's no pain or suffering and whatnot. Morgoth is banished to the Void, described as being "out of the confines of the world, never able to return therein"
@rskinney78 If reading the works of one of the greatest fiction authors of our time makes me a "nerd" as you so eloquently put it, then yes I am one and proud of it.
I personally feel Sauron was trying to make Frodo feel empty and alone, like he was already dead. "I'm coming to get you". I don't think he meant anything else. nothing personal, anyway. Sauron is convinced he's the cream; to him there is no other reference point.
@jhibbitt1 He thought frodo was trying to hide by turning invisible, but he was only making it easier for sauron to follow because sauron could actually feel the ring more when it put it on, and was saying that with the ring on or off, we can see him. Frodo went to 'the void' after he put on the ring, hence saurons reference to the void, and how there is no life.
Sauron totally needed to appear more. I mean he was the freaking Lord of the Rings, but he didn't have any speaking lines in the book, and never appeared. At least he had this scene in the film, so you got a sense of his evilness.
@CinnabonChan He was talked about extensively in the books. The fact that he never physically appeared and was only ever alluded to added to his mystique.
@SabbraCadabra I'm not sure, it made him feel less a character, and more a plot device. But then again characterisation was not Tolkein's strong suit. I mean Morgorth turns up loads of time in the Simarillion, but I just felt Sauron was an anticlimactic villain. Shelob doesn't speak, but still manages to appear and be a truly menacing character. (I mean Shelob probably can speak, she probably chooses not to converse with her din dins.)
@CinnabonChan i think tolkein felt strongly about the idea that the ultimate evil of the story should never be seen, it makes it more terrifying. i personally think that sauron never appearing altho frodo feels him multiple times is one of the strongest aspects of tolkein's literature
@44ky1 I kind of felt him to be too understated as a villain. Like his minor apperances in the movies were the right mix I think... enough so you get a glimpse of how horrifying he is, but not so much that you don't really see him at all. I just remember being disappointed that we never encounter him in anyway in the books and he never even speaks. I just felt it was anticlimactic.
@Implicit11388 Because hes less of a character, and more of a device. I just felt cheated that he never really appeared. I agree less is more when it comes to villains, but you can overdo it, and end up with a copout, like the Blair Witch.
@CinnabonChan you feel cheated that he doesnt appear? even though he is a dark lord of immense power everyone fears, and has armies and minions to do his bidding for him? tolkien never intended for sauron to appear in person, it would lessen his stature as an omnipresent threat. he is a faceless horror. that isn't a cop out. that's good literature.
@CinnabonChan i actually loved it that way. because you keep having this thoughts in your mind "what does he look like? how big is he? its just crazy. and i think peter jackson did a good job on that part.
This would be really badass just before a dubstep drop...
