Steve is a great singer, but as with any singer who replaces the original...the problem arises where the songs are sung...albeit vocally great...however, cannot...have the true feeling Fish had, because Steve's life experiences are not Fish's.
Asking me which one of the two versions of Marillion I like more, it's like asking a father which one of his two sons he loves or likes more.Marillion has been a band with five musicians and by you being so blunt in favoring FISH you disrespect the other members of the band that created the first four albums of the band along with the big guy and underrate the wonderful great musician and artist that is H.I love them all the same.Get real people and have some decency and courtesy for MARILLION
fish and steve both great in there own way ,,,but i must say when hooks in you came out with steves powerful vocals i was more hooked than with fish...just my view
ah why not, it would be historical? it never happens this way. u could have like 2 different camps(promote sales) goin at it 2 see who is better or u could have a marillion w/ fish album thing, like queen and p. rodgers did. just a thought. chemistry is chemistry.
I think that the problem was not Hogart in Marillion phase 2, he is a good singer, but the kind of music is totally different: Marillion+Fish ? Neo prog, pretentious, Marillion + Hogart ? pop, pleasing music. That's it. Those, like me, that in 80s was frustrated for the complete absence of prog bands found in Marillion some fresh air. But not all the prog fans listened pop during the 80s, so we found very difficult to eat that sweetness. In sum, they shoudn't be compared.
i cant believe u lot moaning about fish and hogart get real genesis wernt genesis without gabriel, however marillion r one of the best bands live still without fish, steve hogart rules
Marillion without Fish is like the body without the brain. Fish is a musical savant while Marillion now is just another British pop band. I do like Steve Hogarth he was extremely nice when I met him+the rest of the band.
Both Fish and H are amazing. Both eras of the group are amazing. Both the music and the singers sound COMPLETELY DIFFERENT.
This creates a schism within the fanbase, because fans from both sides have their emotional ties to the albums that became their life soundtracks in different decades.
The band would have had HUGE success in the 90s and beyond if they had just simply changed the name. Keeping the name "Marillion" was a curse, and simply divisive, as the last 20+ years have shown us.
steve hogarth may be a good singer, and i remember seeing him on the first tour after splitting with fish. i saw him and thought "what a jerk" - but the audience was so kind to accept he was so completely different. anyway - i kinda accepted him, but never liked him singing the old fish songs. in my eyes he shouldnt be allowed to sing them, because he fu** them up completely
Some of the comments on this video are truly pathetic...FISH is best...NO STEVE is better, yeah & my daddy is bigger/harder than your daddy....FUCKIN MORONS.
FACT 1)The FISH era had many great songs & some shite material
FACT 2)The HOGARTH era has had many great songs & some shite material
The band freely admit that in hindsight they should have renamed when mr Dick departed & so avoiding this continuous bollocks.
Assassing live(fish) & Neverland live(hogarth) are fine examples of both eras.
I love Marillion like the next guy, but I am not a huge fan of the new Marillion. I wonder if it has anything to do with the fact that I listened to Marillion before Fish left. The new guy is a fine singer, but when he replaced Fish, my first thought was he is no Fish. I felt as if the soul of the band was gone. When I think of Marilloin, and sitting in my room in the 80's listening to an old tape I recorded from a record, I could not possible think of a Marillion lineup without Fish.
@vampiroangelico Marillion with Fish and Marillion with Hogarth are two completely different bands. This was nothing more than old friends meeting up, celebrating the old days and saying "remember when we used to do this?". If Hogarth had been involved what exactly would he have done? Backing vocals? Surely having to play second fiddle on stage to Fish would have been more insulting to him than not being involved at all. Remember this was a Fish gig, and a Fish era Marillion song. That's all.
Why was there ever a need to do a Marillion show with Fish and without Steve Hogarth? Where was Hogarth? Had I been him, I would have been insulted by this reunion, especially considering that Hogarth is a far more accomplished singer, songwriter, musician than Fish, as well as a far more intelligent human being that is not struggling with alcoholism like Fish has been.
@Dee1346 It doesn't matter who's joining who. I found it rude of them to leave Steve Hogarth out of this situation.
Can you imagine being in Steve Hogarth;s shoes? You've been with Marillion since 1989, you've given them years of hard work, you made them a highly successful band with your intelligence and talent, and next thing you know they're like "Aw, we're going to do a reunion night with our old singer "the alcoholic", so yeah, you stay out of it!".
@s11ddartha I can agree to an extent on the solo thing, although they all have solo projects (Steve Rothery made solo CDs with a band and Pete Trewavas in the successful Transatlantic).
I cannot bring myself to say whether Fish is better than Hogarth, considering how radically different they are from each other/ They're bot really good at what they do and I love both. I relate to Hogarth's style and voice a lot more, but that doesn't mean he's "better".
@cujo9 Well - You could say that without Marillion there would have been no Fish too. It was a magic period, it didn't last - no magic does. So weird and sad to see people get all worked up and angry over this. Let go, PLEEEASE! Neither your youth, or the soundtrack to it will return. Enjoy the memories, go scour Spotify for some new music as well. Living in the past does noone any good. The magic is still there in your old albums from back in the day, to be enjoyed - as a memory.
Marillion didn't die after fish left, they simply changed direction. Personally I don't like a lot of the newer stuff, but I'm not saying its poor material. Seasons End, Holidays in Eden and Brave were far better than anything Fish ever managed as a solo artist. Marillion may be a pale shadow of their former selves, but at least they aren't like a fish out of water.
@samwisegamgeese Marillion didn't died... it just changed... and have you listened to Genesis with Peter Gabriel? compare that to fish... I think hogarth is more original
Thank god, not everyone is a stupid twat like you. If you think Marillion is dead, then shut the fuck up and stop whining already. Because nobody wants to hear your bitching and mourning.
I follow them since early '80 and I saw all their concerts in Italy and Rome, collect all the lp, extended, memorabila and lives and then I left them some year after the Fish's departure. Fish was a real master. I'm so sad to see them so, older and with no more the original verve I loved. But, a myth is a myth, no words. Thanks for this.

I really hope they dont reunite, or if they have reunioned, I really hope they split up again, or if they have split again, I hope every copy ever made of this crime against art is lost never to be recovered.
And if every copy ever made has been lost and they have split up, I hope none of them have found time to breed, I hope there genetic code has been permanently deleted from the planet.

Back in 1988 I stopped at a petrol station on the A13 and by pure chance bought a 'tape' of Misplaced Childhood. Life has never been the same since. Fish was Marillion...never had any interest in the new guy....and if you split all downloads to fish of post fish.....i don't think too many would be looking at the post fish vids. Just look at the number of hits on each video.....come back fish..we'd travel the world to see you now with the old crew.
Fish wrote my most poignant song, reflecting my divorce, loss of a job and being separated from my kids.... 'Sugar Mice'.... "Your Daddy took a raincheck........"
I think that´s a uncommon reunion, remarkable, ´cause they are one of the most respectable and awesome progressive Bands of the 80´s era. That´s a good thing. Expect a lot of good things to happen.
marillion pass more or less the same situation that Genesis in Genesis Peter who was the mad pushdriving-force left the band and phill take the band and he ruin it but in marillion Fish gone and steve take marillion a transform the band in something new and positeve because they still be a progresive band but now is alternative, art rock and very sweet and i like it don't you think marillion have a new brand blood and Genesis was tranformed in a pop band
Ah yes, I remember turning down the idea of going to this gig due to reasons I can't now recall, and then getting text messages about *this* happening. Some choice swear words may have been heard in my living room...
I prefer my Eras seperate in this case. I mean, they both offer brilliant music and artisticly brilliant poetry, but I (even as a FISH fanatic) must say that I think it was all round better for H to take the wheel.
sorry babes! marillion play to thousands! fish was an absolutely brilliant lyricist and still is! but H has brought us many many wonderful lyrics and a totally different vocal phrasing, which to my mind has kept marillion going for another 20 years!!
:-D dont get me wrong i love fish to bits but my fave marillion songs (apart from lavender) have all been H songs! and steve rothery deserves more recognition than he gets too!
I 'm sorry to all the Fish fans , but Steve Hogarth is the best thing that EVER happened to Marillion!!!! I Do like Fish's kind of poetic imagination, but beyond that ,,,there is no comparison at all. Hogarth writes AWESOME material and outsings Fish by miles and miles!!!
Just read a few posts underneath mine. Is it really 20 years? My God. I feel so old. Saw Fish with Marillion about 8 times in the early days including two trips to Germany by car to see them.
Fish had 4 albums and like 7 years or so in Marillion. Hogarth has 20+ years and 11 albums. If Fish had not left Marillion back then my guess is none of them would have been recording and touring anymore. He had huge problems, and the break was needed for both parties. Steve Hogarth is a great singer, a great entertainer, as is Fish. but the world is not the same, the guys are not the same. Get real folks, it will never happen.
Fish of course had all the hits. But what has fish done since he left Marillion? Sweet FA! Fish era Marillion was simply 'right place at the right time'. They are without doubt my favourite combination. Hogarth is a superior performer, but simply can't write a decent song to save his life.
I disagree with you...Marillion was at his best when Fish was the singer ! You think that Fish made sweet FA after he left the group! I invite you to see all his albums after he left Marillion. Marillion was better rated in terms of quality of musics and lyrics when he was there !
When did this happen? Was this a whole tour or the boys joining in for a couple of sketches?
And most of all....where was Steve Hogarth at that time??
PS: Sorry guys, I'm an H guy Although I never understood why someone should apologise to have a preference. But for some reason, when it comes to the H/Fish topic, fans totally lose their mind (especially Fish's ones, it's a must mention).
I have seen Fish in concert quite a few times over the past years - and from what he has said during these gigs - thou he never mentioned it specifically - I would have thougt they would NEVER reunite. I dont belive it!!!!!! Wish i'd been there.
To me, Marillion beacme "just another Band" *after* their Season's End album which on one was different because of the new sound of Mr. Hogarth but still a wonderful piece of pure Marillion on the other. Since then my musical prefernce has changed drastically.
Still, seeing this original 1980's lineup together again made me reach for the CD rack, grab the "Real to Real" album, blow the dust off of it and enjoy "market square heroes" one more time for the sake of those good ol' days.
Fish left Marillion because he saw his social and family life falling apart due to the endless touring and wasn't prepared to continue that lifestyle. I'd imagine that would still be the case and they've moved in entirely opposite directions since '89. At least they left 4 fantastic albums that accomplished in 6 years what most bands fail to accomplish in 20 years. Clutching At Straws will always be near the top of my favourite album pile.
My younger brother used to run a sandwich shop on King's Cross station. Fish came in once and asked for a toasted sandwich, which was about six quid (it being London and a railway station cafe).
Fish was very sarcastic about the price, so my younger brother launched a tirade about the cost of rock concerts and programmes and tee-shirts...
Fish said 'fair enough', took his sandwich and sat quietly in a corner.
C´mon, think about it. Even in the case of a reunion - fish wouldn´t be able to sing the old songs. His voice suffered from alc and his living style. It´s sad but true.
What the Hell on Earth is happening here? I just can´t believe my eyes! It´s Fish jammin´wi´is´old meetes from Marillion! Ooh Yeah! Ooh Yeah!Ooh Yeah!Where´s the road to Scotland?!!!!!!!!!!
If I'd visit a restaurant because I know I'm served a delicious beef meal that inludes a very tasty steak - would I say "oh thank's" if they exchanged the steak for a chicken in jelly in a can because the cook left? I'd be disappointed if this meal would keep the name and change the restaurant. I'd try to find out where the cook went - to find out that I can't get my favourite meal there either.
I'd get to the conclusion that the "real one" was at the original restaurant with the original cook.
Fish did his stuff, it was great, depressive, but great. Steve Hogarth gave another way to marillion's music, a wonderfull way... Fish.... I've hear his albuns and you wanna know?
nothing of special, so.. Marillion really was fish?
Wow! Amazing! the last I heard Steve and Mark still refused to ever get back together with Fish. Bygones be bygones maybe. I do think Marillion got better musically after Fish, too bad the music just didn't interest me. Looks like Steve has kinda let loose there.
they have absolutely not got better, they've changed. Fish is a real performer. If you ask me they were more fun with Fish. But don't take this the wrong way, because H is fantastic too, but very different. Fish with marillion and H with marillion are totally different bands.
Talk about blow me away.. and i'm only a minute into it. And not talking about the sound quality either. The shear fact to see FISH again with all the lads. Man this is PURE GOLD...
ive never bought qa rush album and i think i grafted thqat t shirt from the shops hidden inside the blue web grendel t shirt so i guess it sort of makes sense innit kidda's
Have you seen Steve Rothery and Diz Minnitt playing at a Bucks Festival in September as The Granmarstonberries? Comfortably Numb is excellent.

sorry babes! marillion play to thousands! fish was an absolutely brilliant lyricist and still is! but H has brought us many many wonderful lyrics and a totally different vocal phrasing, which to my mind has kept marillion going for another 20 years!!
:-D dont get me wrong i love fish to bits but my fave marillion songs (apart from lavender) have all been H songs! and steve rothery deserves more recognition than he gets too!

So the only song you loved form the Fish period was Lavender? and the rest are H songs... pop fan i take it? :) Speaks volumes that comment.

Castle7000 2 years ago
That's why Marillion now play to 1000 instead of 10000 +.
RPZ500 2 years ago 3
Soz but Steve actually sounds like Chris de burg!
Although i do prefer Fish when he had hair!
Misplaced Childhood has amazing lyrics and is sung just perfectly!

Just read a few posts underneath mine. Is it really 20 years? My God. I feel so old. Saw Fish with Marillion about 8 times in the early days including two trips to Germany by car to see them.
Best music ever! IMHO.
chevy79stepside 3 years ago
Please, my friends.
I have just checked out Fish for the first time in about a year.
Tell me he is back with the original band and not that fraudster who replaced him for the around the last ten years?
Cheers.
chevy79stepside 3 years ago
Fish had 4 albums and like 7 years or so in Marillion. Hogarth has 20+ years and 11 albums. If Fish had not left Marillion back then my guess is none of them would have been recording and touring anymore. He had huge problems, and the break was needed for both parties. Steve Hogarth is a great singer, a great entertainer, as is Fish. but the world is not the same, the guys are not the same. Get real folks, it will never happen.
andykrikkit 2 years ago 15
who had all the fukn hits with marilliom ? fish or the other twat ?
6969dilligaf6969 1 year ago
Fish of course had all the hits. But what has fish done since he left Marillion? Sweet FA! Fish era Marillion was simply 'right place at the right time'. They are without doubt my favourite combination. Hogarth is a superior performer, but simply can't write a decent song to save his life.
superatticman 1 year ago

E poi come chitarrista è straordinario!

Ace! Early Marillion was brill - the concerts were something else, leaping up and down at the front!!

Still, seeing this original 1980's lineup together again made me reach for the CD rack, grab the "Real to Real" album, blow the dust off of it and enjoy "market square heroes" one more time for the sake of those good ol' days.

wtf? a reunion! any plans for fish and the lads to tour?
T4lambdaphage 3 years ago
oh i wish i could have been there to see it!!
mallenalla 3 years ago
Fish left Marillion because he saw his social and family life falling apart due to the endless touring and wasn't prepared to continue that lifestyle. I'd imagine that would still be the case and they've moved in entirely opposite directions since '89. At least they left 4 fantastic albums that accomplished in 6 years what most bands fail to accomplish in 20 years. Clutching At Straws will always be near the top of my favourite album pile.
Ali360 3 years ago 2
Marillion never been the same without fish, h I'm still buying his albums and the last one, 13th star, is excellent!!
I can't wait for the 10th of october to see him in live in athens.
Will always love the jester for ever and ever...

Wow! Amazing! the last I heard Steve and Mark still refused to ever get back together with Fish.
