This was probably my favourite Acorn game! Did anyone else do the driving around on the ground trick? If you sorta tilted the wings a bit on the runway, you could stay on the ground
I used to play this game as a child, I must have racked up hours upon hours in this game and I never once knew how to land properly or what the actual objective of the game was.
thanks for this, loved this game. Think I once clocked up about 15 plane kills - I remember to this day how buzzing I was. Was it the Fokka plains or something the red ones that you got loads of points for for shooting them down? I used to get well into it after a while!
Well I'm proud to say that the author Andrew is my brother, who went on to design Stunt Racer and Starfighter 3000 along with Tim Parry. The only contribution I made to Chocks Away! was to write some of the mission briefings and do a small amount of testing. The days of a single developer making a major impact are long gone and Andrew now works in the games industry for a large studio. Regards Dave Hutchings
Hello, Dave. I know that Spitfire Fury (WW2 flight sim) was unfortunately never released. However, is there a chance that the game exists somehow in a playable form? This was one of the most anticipated games for the Archie, and I'm sure that a lot of people would be interested to find out and see more of what could have been the only flight sim to best Chocks Away. Any information you can provide on Spitfire Fury would be most welcome.
@asm1 The version of Spitfire Fury on the APDL flight simulator pack is different to the Andrew Hutchings game. The APDL version was created using the Simis Flight Simulator Toolkit . The Hutchings game was incomplete and remains unreleased.
@hoggler555 Is Andrew really your brother? I discovered Starfighter 3000 in 1994...then only managed to find a working copy of the game in the last few years. I remember enjoying playing that game when I first saw it. Couldn't stop playing it. :-) Stunt Car Racer was also another classic. I am sure I got a copy of that somewhere.
Thanks to your brother. I spent many great months playing this game. The missions were so cool.....i was only 5 or 6 but remember it like it was yesterday!
@hoggler555 AWESOME! To date, this is still the finest dogfighting game for sheer satisfaction and target rich environments I have ever played. I fondly remember blasting a bombardment balloon out of the air before ramming a tridecker
@hoggler555 hey Dave, or anyone who might be reading this... can someone please tell me the controls, as i can't find a list of the controls anywhere!!!!
I can't tell u how comforting it is to know people who played this and other Acorn games. I was the only person i knew with an Acorn. Everyone else had Amigas. Wish i had the internet back then.
@ahaulucky11 I owned an Atari STe. I only managed to play around with an Acorn RISC PC for a short while. I must say though they were nice machines to use.
My brother spent far too much time on this, and the extra missons. Best moment was when he landed and was shot up by passing plane. Even more fun when using the cheats and flying like a jet fighter.
WOW :D I used to spend hours playing this while all the other kids were sat at home playing mario i spent my childhood on it, the BEST flight "sim" i've ever played without a doubt, it was the lazy mans "interdictor" ;)
Man, this was the best game ever! Does anyone know if there is a recent game similar to this one, for the PC, PS3 or Xbox? I would love to play an exact replica of this game with updated graphics!
RISC did become the future of computing. RISC code is now found in the WIndows XP operating system and iPODs and iPhones now have ARM7 and ARM9 processors. If it wasnt for research done by Cambridge University Computers you wouldnt have Multicore Multithread and fast multitasking. Before and in Win95 it was CISC computing. Without this things like this website would not be possible or at best very very slow.
Sweeeet! Another top game. Its funny how your imagination transported you away when playing these old games. Not sure weither its due to being younger when these games were around or your brain had to add the missing pieces. May be both?
ooooooh crikey, I've been trying to get an emulator to work for years so I can play Chocks again - was it difficult to get yours working? I'd be ever so grateful for any advice!
I also used to play this game for hours on end. I there anyway to get it running on Windows? Like through an Acorn emulator? I've been searching for ages for it but can't find it anywhere. Would really like to play it again. I remember the big bombers where tricky to shoot!
APDL do CDs of 4th Dimension games. They can supply you with the Red Squirrel emulator too (emulates an A5000, RISC PC etc), but probably not the ROMs.
Used to play this one for hours & hours. Me & bro used to play 2 player split screen mode to do joint missions. There was one mission we never finished - I remember it to this day! Can't get it to run on my RiscPC :(

And rightfully so, SR 2K, SF 3K and Chocks are three of the very best games on any system never mind just the Acorn :)
