First heard it as the original Jeff Wayne version on the ad at the pictures. When shuffling through a friends tape collection and saw this on it then I had to listen. 'Travelogue' is in my top three fave albums. I do not and ever have owned a copy of 'Dare'.
AlfrescoBulimia should have Ears checked, or maybe only experienced the odd early League track.
TG were OK, bur only OK.
CV were definite innovators and will always be hailed as such, but dismissing Ware & Marsh as a shadow of the likes of TG & CV is balderdash & I'm sure that TG & CV would agree.
Heaven 17 are about to do a live tour on Penthouse and Pavement tracks only, but no doubt there will be the odd Being Boiled enchore no doubt.
Pity Ian has given it up though and has gone to do other things in life. He, I think, was the main philosophical element in the HL/H17 setup, I think.
I wouldn't be surprised he is studying Psychology in the great US in some college there, or something like that, or doing something interesting like that. He could even be living in Goa in Indian, who knows!
But I'd like to think he is learning to be a trick cyclist, like the old actress Janice Rule, and Billy C's the Scottish yid's misses, Pam.
Could be studying Psychology in some american college, like Janice Rule or Billy's Pam did. Or could be in Goa, in India. Who knows! Wherever he is he is remembered.
By the way, a favorite Heaven 17 track of mine is The Best Kept Secret, but from The Luxury Gap, not Penthouse and Pavement - quite a haunting track. Some later copies of The Luxury Gap do not have it, for some reason. CONSPIRACY!
I used to dance to this at our local club on a Tuesday night. I was 14! We had glue-sniffing, Pro-plus, Do-Dos, Pomagne, speed, heroin and if you survived that then there were NF skinheads, Mods, Rockers, etc who'd all beat the shit out of us for wearing the tiniest bit of eye-liner. And everyone goes on about the feral youth of today, lol. They haven't a clue...
This is a great song - so way ahead of its time. It wouldn't sound out of place on a "Creamfields" or "Ministry of Sound" compilation of today. It's a shame that Martin Ware and Phil Oakey couldn't sort out their differences as the early League were so mould-breaking and pioneering in their musical output.
Totally agree on all counts! The early League stuff was a class apart and way ahead of its time. When the girls turned up and they all started listening to Abba it was time to divert attention to Heaven 17! Their version of "Are Everything" by The Buzzcocks (an early b-side) is well worth a listen!
Yea but heaven 17 lacked the guy that played bass i think , you can easily notice that in "geisha boys and temple girls" i wouldn't mind it being done right with Phil and the rest of the old leaguers
@zzzsjp Have a listen to Human League's Secrets album then, that's pretty decent too considering it's more commercial than Travelogue.and Reproduction.
Don't have a go at them for getting the girls in the band, because they still did great and became more popular.
@lec0roh Sorry mate, I"Creamfields" or "Ministry of Sound" is mostly crap anyway and this tune is nothing to do with Human League, it's by someone else, they just added boring synth effects.
Used to love this song back in the eighties, first time i have heard it for many years, thanks for putting it on. Have only just discovered U-tube music video. Love them
This sounds like music of the old sonic's :)

You lot are going to hate me for this..... :D
The League did some great tracks but they were far from mould breaking......
It was just a diluted, commercialized, version of what the likes of Throbbing Gristle and Cabaret Voltaire were doing.
