Interestingly, a couple weeks ago, I was taxiing when an F-4 (I assume he was on his way down to Tyndall) dropped in for some gas. His UHF transmissions sounded exactly like the audio recorded in the video. I would have thought the bad audio quality was just a fact of it being recorded back in the '60s.
@skipplet Interesting. Yeah, there are about 80+ QF-4s down at Tyndall....similar lot out at Holloman. Other than those two bases the only other one I know on the circuit is the Collings Foundation bird out of Stowe MA making the air show circuit. By the way, I sent the audio track to the producer of Vietnam in HD which is know running on the History Channel. Haven't seen all episodes yet so don't know where it is run but I did notice my name in the credits.
Thanks for posting. Lest we forget. God bless them then and now. All of our courageous men and women in our armed forces. I wish the powers that be would make this required viewing in grade school, and let the kids' questions roll. They'd make the right call, no matter who was teaching.
was the tone at 1:56 the ejection seat tone? i've been looking for a recording of that. i seem to recall it being described in vietnam-era accounts as a piercing tone on guard, but no joy finding a recording.
I find the video confusing, and a doubtful recreation. I did not hear any signs of the Eject! Eject! Eject! warning from the pilot. I personally have viewed an F-4E Phantom II failed ejection from the WSO. His life ended on the Vertical Stab of the Phantom, which was streaked with his blood and entrails, been there, seen that, and another 100 horrors when your tasked to identify body parts from the aircraft...... just a thought.....
@shadowfax0417 "been there, seen that, and another 100 horrors when your tasked to identify body parts from the aircraft"
Your profile says you are 53, which would make you too young for service in a major Phantom-era conflict like Vietnam. Where did you see all these deaths related with this aircraft?
@dcraigfly Roger copy. I realize the "fox" as I have similar exp in the Rhino....but for the life of me cannot figure out what call sign they were using and that is the closest I could come up with for a general audience.
@stoneyj50 This was a flight of four F-4s call signs FOX. Fox 2 was shot down, note the WSO is referred to as Fox-2B. Fox-2A would have been the pilot.
Very confusing to use FOX for the flight's call sign when the use of Fox-1, Fox-2, and Fox-3 was used for weapons deployed.
ROBY, CHARLES DONALD Remains Returned - ID Announced 891120 Name: Charles Donald Roby Rank/Branch: O4/US Air Force Unit: Date of Birth: 28 September 1928 Home City of Record: Iowa Park TX Date of Loss: 03 March 1967 Country of Loss: North Vietnam Loss Coordinates: 174400N 1062300E (XE478621) Status (in 1973): Missing in Action Category: 2 Aircraft/Vehicle/Ground: F4C Refno: 0605 Other Personnel in Incident: Floyd W. wait, their flight call sign was Fox? that doesn't make much since...Fox is the term used to signal what type of missile is launched. Fox 2 would signal a radar guided missile for example. was this term used for the same purpose back then?
@dean84921 I am not 100% that was their callsign but it sure sounded close enough to "Fox". Either way I agree it was not a good callsign to use given its use in describing missiles and guns.
I THINK I HAVE FIGURED WHICH PHANTOM WAS SHOT DOWN. THERE WERE 3 THAT WERE SHOT DOWN BY A SAM WITH THE PILOT NOT BAILING OUT THE WSO BAILING OUT. THE THREE PHNATOM DATES ARE SEPT 4, 1966 - NOV 22, 1966 AND OCT 7 ,1967. IF THERE IS ANY OTHER INFO I CAN TELL U WHICH ONE IT IS.
@stoneyj50 don't worry about quality.just....umm... "let them go","let them go".....ad them all, even if you got 10000 of these.remember only you got those records on tube(not counting new wars)

I like how they are all calm when the strobe pops up, and nobody gets really excited until 2 gets hit.

@stopthatimmediately The ejection seat tone is at 3:27. That tone at 1:56 was a chirp from their Radar Homing and Warning Receivver.

@stoneyj50 ah, thanks. i've also been trying to find more about rhwr mechanization for this era. so, in other words, thanks for uploading this :)
stopthatimmediately 5 months ago
@stopthatimmediately 3:27 is the Emergency Locator Transmitter that broadcasts that decaying tone on the guard frquencies (243.0 and 121.5)
