Honestly, don't let it bother you. We all have accents from the different places that we've been raised, but as you obviously know, there is no more a white language than there is a black one. I found that we often mature at different rates than our old friends. Sometimes it's weird getting back in touch with old friends and discovering that you've grown apart. Sometimes they are ahead, and sometimes they are behind. It's very important in the company you keep, it shapes how we mature and grow.

A three piece suit was not uncommon. They had pride and dignity. The erosion started just as I was graduating. "Acting white" was a slur from one black to another that was a good student.

I remember the first time I saw a movie where an African King and Queen were brought before the Pharaoh, bringing gifts and showing their strength as a kingdom of Africa. This was the early 60s. They were presented as beautiful, proud and prosperous people, speaking with intelligence and showing off the richness of their lands and people. That image has stayed with me my whole life. Back when I was a kid I only spoke Spanish. I was held back a year to learn English. Most of my friends were white and like lilcoco, I read a bunch of books (it's part of how I come to love movies and writing), and like her I had a friend of the family ask me, "Damn, why don't you talk 'Mexican'?" and what's funny is, it's a WHITE person asking me this! Acting Latino because they're in a house full of Mexicans or they're dating one. I chuckled and asked them to repeat that in front of a mirror.

I remember the first time I saw a movie where an African King and Queen were brought before the Pharaoh, bringing gifts and showing their strength as a kingdom of Africa. This was the early 60s. They were presented as beautiful, proud and prosperous people, speaking with intelligence and showing off the richness of their lands and people. That image has stayed with me my whole life. This "speaking white/black" isn't about race - it's about ignorance. I grew up in a poor neighbourhood that was predominantly white. My mother was well-educated, and my family encouraged me to read, and to speak proper English. Guess what? I used to get accused of "speaking like a rich kid".

Thank you so much. I'm black. I used to be friends with a girl who asked me the same thing. It was hurtful when she said it. My mom told me "I was speaking proper English." She was jealous that I was going to a better high school (mostly white, some blacks, Asians) that had a variety of things. Now she's single mother while I'm focusing on college. Back when I was a kid I only spoke Spanish. I was held back a year to learn English. Most of my friends were white and like lilcoco, I read a bunch of books (it's part of how I come to love movies and writing), and like her I had a friend of the family ask me, "Damn, why don't you talk 'Mexican'?" and what's funny is, it's a WHITE person asking me this! (full disclosure: i'm a white guy) I thought your annecdote was fascinating. ebonics is something i'm exposed to quite a bit as a fan of hip hop, american black culture, and living in a neighborhood with a large black community. dialect is a strange thing, and it unintentionally can set a tone that perhaps one didn't intend. it's interesting to see that it works both ways, and that the way one speaks vs the way one looks can have a powerful effect on how you're treated by others.

@hotdrumchick I don't understand it. Look at how a Black person speaks in England or Austrailia for that matter. Hell, look in America down south or in Texas. You have different so called accents but the use of proper English. It's not speaking White. Germans are White and I sure don't sound like that. Brits are white, don't sound like that either.
