  • That was great...too many use the bible as an axiom & not a guide that points you to the gospel...

  • There is no Demiurge.

  • So we should cast aside Fundamentalism and embrace Liberalism and Secularism?

    Brilliant.

I love how this video doesn't quote a single scripture to support his ideas.

  • @kawless That's not the argument being made, although a little classically understood liberality would probably do you some good. And I, in return, love how completely you don't understand the idolatrous nature of the literalist perspective. Such a festival of love!

You want scripture? Go to the right. Follow the link. I'm sure you will find many, many more things to love!

  • @kawless

I'm an atheist. One of the reasons why I left the church was because God started to weigh heavily upon me of the errors of my fellow Christians, mainly idolatry. If you posses any images of God, Jesus, angels, saints, or animals that reprsent them, or the cross, you have broken the 2nd commandment. You must repent and burn the idols or you will go to hell.

  • ridiculous

  • @Smetch Such a substantive response!

  • Me and my mom were just talking about this :) we both are careful with our bibles, like not putting stuff on top of it, things like that. I asked her, do you think in some way that might be wrong? She answered, no it's the word of God!! But it's a book at the same time, it's not God...Is the bible an idol? Only God knows, plus I read it, not pray to it.

  • Much of the Bible is figurative... and much of the meanings within it are completely lost when read literally.

Plus many Christians are just religious people, but don't really know God... I used to be like that at one time, until God opened my eyes to many things and I left the mainstream church.

Eh... humans are screwed up and one day God will open all of our eyes to what truth really is.

    Peace :)

  • While not ALL who say Lord Lord will be saved, if there is no embracing of Jesus Christ (as He is presented in the Scriptures) as Lord and Saviour it is an evidence that the dark cloud of God's wrath is still upon you. Love for God is the Law that stands above all others. (Deut. 6:5) and where there is no love for His Word there is no Love for Him. Christ is the Word become flesh. (Jn.1:1, 16)., and "if any man love not the LORD Jesus Christ, let him be anathema" (1 Cor. 16:22)

  • The Buible commands to repent of your sins and believ in Jesus Christ and you will be saved. Otherwise you'll be damned forever in hell.

  • So all of those who say "Lord, Lord!" to Jesus will be saved? Is that what Jesus himself says? Or are things more...complex?

  • @fggervas So does God create flawed humans who unless they embrace a religion they are going to burn in hell forever and ever? So what about 1 billion Muslims, 1 billion Hindus, Buddhists, Jews, Sikhs, Jainists, etc are they ALL going to hell unless they become "christians"? What a fucked up god you have if the answer is yes.

Your 'god" is not a god of love but one selfish, pompous, evil monster who made so you can "praise" him all day long or you are going to hell. NICE!

  • FYI, not all fundamentalists believe that Bible is 100% literal (more ignorance exposed) However interpretation starts with the literal. and when that does not work, you move on to the metaphoric and contextualising and so forth. I, for one am willing to be misunderstood for the truth's sake. Sad fact is that those who misunderstand are either Christians who are innurred to the spiritual wickedness of our day, or those who are still dead in their sins.

  • True Christian fundamentalism is neither dangerous or extreme. Like any other movement it has its lunatic fringes (i.e. Fred Phelps and the like) The comments made on these posts display a breathtaking amount of ignorance regarding this subject. Ah, but the rub (both within the professing Christian church and outside) is the dogmatic nature of fundamentalism. Like it or not, the Bible is a book of absolutes and fundamentalsts defend it tooth and nail, even to the point of being misunderstood.

  • It is a book of absolutes. You are correct. The question becomes: which of the absolutes that are articulated in Scripture is definitive? There is within the Bible a clear hierarchy of ethics, with one Law standing above all others. The issue as we defend our tradition comes in the ability to discern that law.

  • i think you'd have to be stupid to worship the bible instead of who the bible points to. i don't really see your point. maybe you should make a video about the fundamental truth of seeking God through scripture

  • Fundamentalism is becoming increasingly militant

and extreme, both in Islam and in Christianity.

We don't need any more Jesus Camps

    or Westboro Baptist Churches.

I was a Christian pastor for 40 years

and I believe we must stop teaching Christianity to our children,

if we wish to avoid tyranny and global religious war.

  • I enjoy being idolized.

  • For thou hast magnified thy word above all thy name.

  • In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

    John 1:1

  • Interesting points.I too think at times Fundamentalists fall into bibliolotry.I'd like to share the Catholic teaching on inerrancy (which is slightly different from that of the Fundamentalist). We believe that the Scriptures are in whole & in part without error. We believe it's inerrant according to the intention of the instrumental author.Depending on the mode of expression a author may be speaking figuratively, literally, etc.,& God gives Tradition to know which is which.Vat II Dei Verbum Art 11

  • This was actually pretty well-presented. :) Sounds like something from the radio.

  • Hmmm, yes , as a British Christian, I`d just like to apologise for us in the UK inventing the whole "Idol" tv tragedy then giving it to you lot in the US.Not quite as bad as Iraq, but then we`re involved in that mess too (now THERE`S some interesting idolatry...)

  • I swear, fundamentalists tarnish christianty's image. And the Bible is not 100%literal. Good Work. Fundamentalism is a cult.

  • kneed????

  • Here's the real reason that anyone believes that the Bible is the word of God.

"BECAUSE THE CATHOLIC CHURCH SAYS IT IS."

If you are a "Bible Only" Christian, you kneed to find out how the Bible came into existence.

Oh, ... and you need to stop being a "Bible Only" Christian because the Bible itself doesn't teach "Bible Only".

It teaches Bible and Tradition and teaches about a Church with men in authority that can make changes as they see fit.

  • Here is the real reason that anyone believes that the Bible is the Word of God..

BECAUSE IT IS GOD'S INSPIRED WORD! this means that the human authors of the Bible (like Moses, David, John, etc) were led by the H/Spirit to write down His Word accurately and without mistake. No where did the "Catholic Church" instructed these men to write but rather this Church is doing a good job of corrupting the God's word by adding all sorts of writings claiming that those writings too, are inspired.

  • I believe the Bible is the word of God for the following reasons;

1.Because the fulfilment of prophecy points to an intelligence that is beyond the capabilities of man.

2.Because i trusted in its promises and found them to be true.

3.Because i found my spiritual experiences confirmed by the writers of the Bible, after i had experienced them.

  • I understand perfectly. You don't know why you believe that the Bible is the word of God.

  • I hope that one day you will consider God's word seriously, because He means what He says. Thank you for your time.

  • I do. And because I'm Catholic, I know why I believe that the Bible is the word of God.

You cannot answer the question and tell me why you believe that the Bible is the word of God. You just start quoting it. Well that does not answer the question.

  • Catholics aren't Christians.

  • We as Catholics are told by our Church that we are to consider you who profess a belief in Christ as Christians even though you do not possess the fullness of the Christian faith. That's a big difference between our two Churches. One possesses charity and the other possess none.

    1. Actually there are evil human beings who can and do predict the future accurately.

2.+3. Or perhaps you wanted them to be true so much that you conformed yourself to that expectation.

  • Yes we are

  • Thank you for your comments trinitybethesda, but i am not interested in being "entertained" but in seeing sinners saved from hell. That is why i get my theology from the Bible,a book written by the Spirit of God and not from youtube.

  • So I find myself wondering, for some reason, why you don't test everything and hold on to what is good. Why not test the doctrine of literal inerrancy against the standards set by the Bible itself? Is this doctrine necessary for faith? Is it mandated by Christ or by the indwelling of the Spirit?

  • in answer to your questions; i have/i do, yes, yes and yes. But this raises an interesting question. What do you use to test yourself? How do you know the spirit you have is the Holy Spirit? How do you know if you are being deceived?

  • I usually use a Pneumatotron 4000 Paraclometer. Yeah, the 5000 has more bells and whistles, but it registers more false positives.

Oh, wait. You wanted a sane response. Sorry. I'll try again.

I challenge and test my own actions and my interpretive framework using the Doctrine of Differential Authority. Meaning I use Christ's Great Commandment, which is itself a expression of the very nature of our Maker, as the standard by which I both live and am guided by Scripture.

  • Good for you. hmmm,i think i'll just stick to the Bible.

  • Aye, that's what I said, my friend. When you say "i think i'll just stick to the Bible," do you mean "I think I'll be guided by what the plain text of the Bible says is most important?" Or do you mean "I think I'll be guided by the presupposition that the Bible is literally inerrant." There's an important difference there.

  • Why do you believe that the Bible is God's word?

  • Why do you believe that the Bible is not God's word?

  • I believe that the Bible IS God's word and I know why I believe it.

Why do you believe that the Bible is God's word?

  • Anyone who is seriously seeking Jesus is inevitably driven to the Bible, because Christianity is based on something that happened in the past, the incarnation of God in Christ at a definite point in history. The Bible records this event. If its recording of this event is true, then it is reasonable to accept that "All scripture is God-breathed" as Peter claims. If it is not true, then who can trust any of its claims? What you can't do is pick and choose your scriptures, you must be consistant.

  • There is only one reason why anyone believes that the Bible is the word of God and that is because an earthly authority, sanctioned by God, declared that these writings were the word of God. Who was that authority?

Keep in mind that there were other writings in use by Christians in the first 3 centuries that ended up not being included.

  • But what is your point?

  • Why do you believe that the Bible is God's word?

  • I have already answered your question, but for your sake i will elaborate. "Beware lest anyone cheat you through philosophy and empty deceit, according to the tradition of men, according to the basic principles of the world, and not according to Christ", or to quote Jesus, "Father, sanctify them in the truth. Your WORD is truth".And if you don't understand that, it is because you need to repent and become a Christian!

  • Oh dear. I have heard some pseudo-intellectual nonsense in my time but this takes the biscuit. So if i literally believe the Bible, which tells me to "flee idolatry and "cleanse myself from idols"; then i'm an idolater for thinking it speaks the truth! My advice to you Beloved spear is, start your own religion, but leave the name of Jesus out of it.Sola grate, sola fide, sola scriptura.

  • A lovely quote from Luther, but Luther wasn't a fundamentalist, my friend. Ever read what he had to say about Revelation? Or James?

Literal inerrancy has corrupted the Protestant Reformation in the same way that ecclesiastical inerrancy corrupted the Catholic church. Both Luther and Calvin were clear: what makes Scripture Holy is the Spirit, not empirical provability.

If you want your biscuit back, you'll need to work a little harder. ;)

  • Nice try BS.Check out the teaching of "fundamentalists" like john Wesley. Scripture is understood as "the plain meaning of the words", yet his ministry was full of the working, guiding and power of the Holy Spirit. The Spirit is not contrary to the word of God as you seem to imply, but confirms its reality and inerrancy inthe life of the born again believer. I am of course assuming you are born again.See, i didnt have to work that hard did i?

  • You seem to be moving closer to orthodoxy! Good! In both Holy Scripture's purpose and in it's telling of the story of our gracious redemption through Jesus Christ, there is no error.

But *literal* inerrancy is neither evident or desirable in scripture, because it is not the foundation on which the truth of scripture is based. To argue otherwise is idolatrous. Follow the link in the video description to the top right...you'll find more assertions that will undoubtedly entertain you. ;)

  • Christianity is not a Bible Only faith.

Christians did not have their own individual Bibles to read and study until they were mass produced most likely in the 18 and 1900's.

So called Bible Only Christianity was not God's idea.

If it were, Bibles would have been available for each Christian to read and study from 33 A.D., onward.

If you are in a Bible Only Church you are in a man made Church.

  • I remembered you just now dearest beloved Spear and so came here again to wish you happy easter. I want to thank God for you in His presence as I write and especially for this video which to me is so important. I am so glad that someone believes in God and worships God . There is only one God who I would like to proclaim existed before the bible and will exist after the bible who does not live in the bible but in the hearts of men who have called upon His Name. ;)

  • um, if the WOrd of the Bible is accompanied by the enlightenment of God's SPirit then there is much power and God's Spirit will never contradict the Bible because the Bible is the Word of God.

  • And yet the Bible can be read without the Holy Spirit, and can be misinterpreted. From that basic truth, and from the core teaching of the Protestant Reformers, the Bible is only the Word of God if the Spirit is present. Modernist empirical fundamentalism misses this, and approaches the text as inherently sacred.

  • What about John the baptist in his mother's womb rejoicing in God? How did those early believers get a bible into his mother's womb? Just curious.

  • Well, given that all of the New Testament hadn't been written yet, we'll assume it was Jesus that John was responding to, and not Scripture. Then again, maybe John's dad was a time-traveling gynecologist. One never knows.

  • The Bible is not a textbook and was never intended to be pondered and dissected with pathological precision as exists in the modern day 'Bible study' under the guidance of experts. Itself the Bible is but a dead letter. It points to God who is the living Word. To substitute the latter for the former is indeed idolatry. Well-done BelovedSpear. I think I have found a friend!

  • The study of church history reveals the concept of absolute biblical inerrancy to be an eighteenth century idea built on the prevailing enlightenment philosophy of the time. The nineteenth century saw the concept harden, and by the early 20th century it became an Evangelical dogma. As others have pointed out on this page, the Bible nowhere makes such a claim for itself; indeed the strongest claim is that it is 'inspired' and thence 'profitable for Christian living.' Inspired. No more, No less.

  • This is very true and very important.

  • Very well said,BelovedSpear...!

  • Very well done. I agree absolutely with you. It's so ironic That Jesus was killed because he talked about the spirit and not the law. The fundamentalists are no different from the Pharisees and Sanhedrin that killed Jesus.

  • more fundamentalist bashing

  • Is that a critique or a request?

  • Very well done! great job! good work and one good video! there is more to that than one can say at this time and age that we live in.

  • Awesome Vid... Dude.. very few intelligent Christians out there.

  • Eh...Ng..Grrr... I think you're on to something, but I think you need a sense of balance. You have to take the propositions of the Bible seriously in some sense, otherwise you'll become a Spong.

  • Quite true. You do need to take them seriously, but not literally. In Calvin's Institutes, which established the Bible as the center of Christian authority during the Protestant Reformation, Calvin focuses primarily on the spiritual dynamics of scriptural authority. Literal inerrancy is not a necessary response.

  • thanks Beloved Spear. I knew this but didn't know how to articulate it. Thanks!

  • You know, the more I watch your videos, the more I learn about TRUE faith.

  • Great vid belovedspear! Sola Scriptura is the tragedy of Christianity.

  • Sola Scriptura is not the tradegy of Christianity, Sola Scriptura does not mean everything is literal or fundamenatalist, it means we go to the bible for the norms of our faith, not human tradition.

  • Where in the Bible does it say to do that?

  • Do what? Go to the bible? Maybe I misunderstood your comment. Scripture alone is not a bad thing, it just means we should not add things to it that are not there nor should we take things out that is there. The bible itself attests to this. Sola Scriptura does not mean that the bible can not be relevant to the 21st century, nor does it mean that it is a book of facts. Help me understand where your coming from.

  • I mean I don't believe the Bible claims to be the sole rule of faith. I mean the doctrine of sola scriptura is itself unbiblical. Please show me where the Bible claims such a status for itself.

  • I am not sure if the bible actually states explicitly that scripture alone is to be the sole rule of faith. I don't think it needs to. The trinity itself is not explicitly stated but I believe it's biblical. The writers of the bible appealed to scripture itself for authority, it does not elevate other things to that status. Is it simply a matter of personal revelation? Is there no standard? Why is it unbiblical? Why do you say it is a tragedy for Christianity?

  • BelovedSpear....excellent, thoughtful and nice light tough to a frightenly intense debate. I hope you are teaching somewhere...Sean.

  • Thanks! Hopefully, I'm "teaching" every Sunday when I preach...
