The only music I will never tire of listening to, the baroque recorder's tone must be the building blocks of my Aryan soul. I beg these songs be the last I chance to hear.
The contrabass must be VERY hard to play right...did they actually have contrabass recorders in the early 17th century? Or is this piece transposed down from its original voicing?
The piece (Suite 20) is originally for 5 instruments. As I understand it, Joris (the rightmost) revised it for 4 by combining parts 3 and 4. The original is just a little too low; it looks like he transposed it up a minor third.
Contrabasses certainly existed and could play pieces like this. They take a lot of air to play - watch Bart breathe every chance he gets.
Yes, contrabasses did exist, but they were renaissance wide-bore style. Copies have been made by Marvin, Breukink, and Brown after originals in Vienna and Brussels and other collections. In the period of baroque style recorders (such as the ones being played here) the lowest instrument was the bassett in F, so the two larger sizes are basically extrapolations by modern makers, I think Friedrich von Huene in this particular case.
These instruments are two Bass recorders in F (415) made by Yamaha. They are Baroque onstruments, but not really modelled directly on a museum instrument (e.g. the Denner Bass recorders that are left). As you see, we never play this size of baroque instruments with dwindcap and tube. By blowing directly into the wondway, you have more possibilities in sound production, we think.
@frquartet It's amazing how many (high) bass recorder players never try without the bocal, and end up missing out on a whole different sound potential.
Fortunately we're now in the era of knick basses so perhaps the day of using a bocal on the high bass is coming to a close.
suoni affascinanti e suggestivi.......grazie!

I just wonder what the largest recorder is: an subcontrabass or an octosubcontrabass one...

The ones on the right look a little "odd" to me, they seem larger than tenors and the mouth piece is older looking.
What are they and why are they shaped as they are?
I love this piece, its absolutely wonderful.

I was expecting to see a bocal if it was a bass, but I appreciate you clearing that up for me!
greatly appreciated,

Uitstekend, natuurlijk zoals altijd!
I could never play a 415 bass without a bocal. My hands aren't large enough and it hurts my wrist after a short time. So beautiful.

i know that this is none of my buisnes but just run me by the line up in terms ofwhich recorder is which.
this is the first time i have ever been stumped

It's a bit hard to be sure, but it looks like (from left to right):
Great Bass (in C), Contra-Bass (in F) and two Basses (in F)
Each size of recorder is twice the length of the recorder two sizes smaller. This makes it one octave lower.
Good performance though - not often you get to see a sub-contrabass in action.
